Suite 300\, 3rd floor of Hudson’s Bay Centre\, above Royal Bank \nAdmission free \n  \nBased on manga by Ryōhei Saigan \nDirected by Takashi Yamazaki (Part 1: 2005\, Part 2: 2007\, Part 3: 2012) \nAll films are presented in Japanese with English subtitles. \nIn the photography exhibition TOKYO Before/After\, photographs from the 1930s and 1940s are contrasted with works after 2010. World War II with its destructive air raids marks the boundary between these two groups of photographs. Tokyo has gone through so many pivotal incidents in its urban history. The Meiji Restoration in 1868 followed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 transformed the city from Edo to Tokyo. Post-war recovery and reconstruction were celebrated with the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. Both the even higher fever of the Bubble economy and its sudden burst transformed the city again at the tail end of the 20th century. What will the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020 do to the city? We all wonder. \n  \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street was such a big hit film in 2005 that a sequel was produced immediately by popular demand. In 2012 Part 3 was added to complete a trilogy of films describing the downtown life of Tokyo in 1958\, 1959\, and 1964. Symbolically standing in the middle of the stories\, the Tokyo Tower\, first in construction\, and then in full function in the television industry\, is a strong unifying image. This heartwarming neighbourhood comedy reminds us that social and cultural changes ALWAYS involve living people who struggle and survive thorough those challenging times. Going through the drama of dealing with changes and progress\, the same individuals who witnessed the events of Before remain in the new world of After to testify about the past. But\, sometimes the memories and testimonies are funny and whimsical\, as are these films. \n  \nThe 2nd screening cycle\nFor the first screening cycle click here > \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street Part 1\, 1958 > Tuesday\, May 22\, 2018  6:30 P.M. 133 min. \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street Part 2\, 1959 > Thursday\, May 31\, 2018  6:30 P.M\, 145 min. \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street Part 3\, 1964 > Monday\, June 4\, 2018  6:30 P.M. 142 min. \nRegister below by choosing which date you want to RSVP. \n
