DESCRIPTION:The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and The Toronto Comic Arts Festival presents\nExhibition of Comics & Illustrations by Jane Mai & An Nguyen\nThe exhibition is in conjunction with the book launch of their book So Pretty / Very Rotten: Comics and Essays on Lolita Fashion and Culture by Jane Mai and An Nguyen\, with additional materials by Novela Takemoto.\nThe exhibition will feature a number of works by An Nguyen and Jessica Mai that are featured in the book So Pretty / Very Rotten. In addition\, there will be Lolita fashion on display as well as a photograph presentation. \nFor more on TCAF click here > \nIn a series of essays and comics that are at once academic and intimate\, cartoonists Jane Mai and An Nguyen delve into Lolita subculture and their relationship with it. Empowering and beautiful\, but also inescapably linked to consumerism\, the Rococo-inspired fashion is indulgent and sublime\, pretty and rotten. The book is published by Koyama Press. \nAn Nguyen is a Canadian cartoonist and illustrator best known for her romantic comic series Open Spaces and Closed Places. She has drawn comics for Spera: Ascension of the Starless\, Electric Ant zine\, and various Love Love Hill anthologies. In addition to So Pretty / Very Rotten which makes its debut at TCAF this year\, she and Jane Mai also released a zine titled Don’t Talk to Me or I’ll Set Myself on Fire.
