SUMMARY:Library Display: IBBY Collection for Young People with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:IBBY Collection on Display at the Japan Foundation Toronto Library \nThe Japan Foundation Toronto Library is proud to share a new exhibit in conjunction with the North York Central Branch of the Toronto Public Library. A selection of items in Japanese from the IBBY Collection for Young People with Disabilities comes to us on loan from January 19 through February 27 from the TPL’s North York Central Library. \nThe mission of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) is to promote international understanding through children’s books\, and to give children everywhere the opportunity to have access to books with high literary and artistic standards. The collection housed by the TPL includes colourful cloth books\, braille items\, and interactive materials – some of which match titles currently offered at the Japan Foundation Toronto Library. It also includes quality books written for\, by\, and about children and teens with physical\, developmental\, intellectual and language disabilities. \nEvery two years the IBBY Documentation Centre selects approximately 50 titles from around the world as part of the “Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities” showcase. All of the Japanese-language items from North York Central Library’s collection that have Outstanding status are part of the temporary exhibition at JFT. In total\, we will be showcasing 40 Japanese-language IBBY items in the library for a period of six weeks. Please see the Library Displays section of our website for more details on visiting and viewing this very special collection! \n\nIBBY Collection at North York Central Library \nInternational Board on Books for Young People \nIBBY Canada \nJBBY Japanese Section of IBBY

This month’s screening will feature a free screening of The God of Ramen\, a documentary about a beloved ramen chef and his ramen shop in Ikebukuro\, Tokyo. \nAdmission: FREE\nFood sample ticket: For a pay-what-you-can donation*\,  you may purchase an optional food sample ticket\, which will allow you to try ramen and other Japan-inspired food samples from local restaurants and shops. \n*All proceeds go to The Revue Cinema\, a not-for-profit organization with a mandate to promote community\, diversity and education through film. \nReservations: No reservations required; admission is on a first-come\, first-served basis.\nQuestions: kscullin@jftor.org or info@revuecinema.ca \nThe God of Ramen\nDir. Takashi Innami\, 2013\, 90 min.\nIn Japanese with English subtitles\nPeople wait in line for over two hours for just one bowl of ramen at the legendary ramen shop “East Ikebukuro Taishoken.” The proprietor\, Kazuo Yamagishi\, has tended this shop for 50 years. \nWhat makes his ramen so special? Why is Taishoken beloved by so many? The story is not only about his pursuit of the perfect blend of flavors. It’s about his life\, love and the strong bond he shares with the people he believes in. \nCompiled from over ten years of documentary footage\, the film incorporates beautiful scenery from Yamagishi’s hometown in Nagano and is enhanced by the “savory” narration of noted ramen lover Shosuke Tanihara\, and the beautiful ending theme song written by Joe Hisaishi. It captures both the light and dark sides of the life of the celebrated ramen chef Kazuo Yamagishi to reveal a uniquely moving story. \nThe Revue Cinema\nThe Revue Cinema has operated almost continuously for 102 years in historic Roncesvalles Village\, and in 2007 began operating as a not-for-profit community centre and theatre with a mandate to promote cultural enrichment through film and educational events. In 2013\, The Revue underwent a complete upgrade to digital film projection while retaining the ability to screen 35mm prints\, thanks to a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This fall\, The Revue was awarded a second Trillium grant for aesthetic improvements and repairs\, and recently completed a renovation of the theatre’s interior. \nAccess
