SUMMARY:Japanese Movies at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema: Neko Samurai
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Yoshitaka Yamaguchi\n2014\, 100 minutes\, PG\nStarring Kazuki Kitamura\, Misako Renbutsu\, Yasufumi Terawaki\, Kanji Tsuda\, Shigeyuki Totsugi\nHistorical comedy/drama\n\nIt’s feline fanciers versus dog devotees in this comic tale of rivalry\, revenge and redemption through the love of a good cat. Kyutaro is a masterless samurai and formidable swordsman who now lives alone\, far from his family\, after losing his position and fortune. Desperate for money\, the taciturn ronin accepts a job offer from a clan of dog-loving samurai: assassinate Tamanojo\, their rival clan’s beloved pet cat\, to prevent her from becoming the cat bride of another powerful clan’s cat groom and creating a fearsome cat power couple! However\, once he is face-to-face with his cuddly quarry\, Kyutaro is unable to complete the mission\, so he fakes the murder and catnaps Tamanojo. SUMMARY:Japanese Movies at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema: Sue\, Mai and Sawa
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Osamu Minorikawa\n2013\, 106 minutes\, PG\nStarring  Ko Shibasaki\, Yôko Maki\, Shinobu Terajima\nComedy/drama\n\nSue\, Mai and Sawa documents the enduring friendship of three single women in their thirties as they confront the challenges\, indignities and rewards of work\, love and family.  Sue-chan is an inventive cook at a chic bistro who is struggling to adjust to a new leadership role. Mai-chan works in sales\, but spends a lot of time covering for her incompetent boss. And Sawa-san (a few years older\, hence the more formal honorific –san) is a freelance illustrator caring for her bedridden grandmother.  Beautifully filmed and superbly cast\, with a soft\, aspirational gloss that belies the harder truths at its core\, this is a sharply observant film that refuses to be dismissed as a simple chick flick. \nPresented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and the Consulate-General of Japan in Toronto \nCommunity partner: Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival \n \n  \n  \n  \n© 2012 “Sue\, Mai & Sawa” Production Committee\, 2013
