SUMMARY:World Heritage in Japan: Photography by Kazuyoshi Miyoshi
DESCRIPTION:World Heritage in Japan: \nPhotography by Kazuyoshi Miyoshi\nJuly 7\, 2017 – September 1\, 2017\n\nHumans have built great civilizations\, a plenitude of unique cultures\, and\, in the wake of four million years of natural history we find ourselves today immersed in a cultural and natural heritage with no apparent bounds or limits.  But the doings of men have often interfered with nature\, sometimes even causing its ruin.  It is our charge today to preserve the great heritage of nature\, as well as the human cultures. \n  \nThe World Heritage Convention is a document adopted in 1972 in Paris by a general session of UNESCO (United Nations Educational\, Scientific\, and Cultural Organization).  Its aims are to preserve for future generations cultural and natural legacies of the world with conspicuous and universal value. \n  \nBy 2016\, there are 1\,052 sites registered as World Heritage sites\, and 192 countries pledged to the world that they accept the obligation and responsibility to cooperate with other countries for the preservation and protection of the World Heritage legacies of humankind. \n \nJapan had signed the convention in June 1992\, and UNESCO designates 20 World Heritage sites in Japan\, consisting of 16 cultural sites and 4 natural sites.  The history can be traced back to the 7th century at Horyu-ji Temple\, or the 8th century at Todai-ji Temple in Nara.  These ancient treasures are contrasted against the modern historical legacies such as the Tomioka Silk Mill and the National Museum of Western Art by Le Corbusier in Tokyo.  Diversity is evident among natural sites as well: Shiretoko Peninsula is surrounded by drift ice\, while the islands of Okinawa and Ogasawara are located in the middle of the tropical ocean. \n  \nPhotographer Kazuyoshi Miyoshi introduces the beauty and attraction of these heritage sites through his 67 photographic works. \n  \nJuly 7 – September 1\, 2017 \nGALLERY HOURS \nMon 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nTues 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nWed 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nThurs 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nFri 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \n  \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n2 Bloor Street East \nHudson’s Bay Centre\, 3rd floor \nAbove Royal Bank of Canada \nwww.jftor.org 416.966.1600 x229 \n  \nADMISSION: FREE \n  \nSaturday openings: \n11:00 am – 4:00 pm \nJuly 8\, 22\, August 12\, 26 \nClosed: Other Saturdays and Sundays \nAugust 7 (Civic Holiday) \nRELATED WORLD HERITAGE IN JAPAN FILM SCREENINGS CLICK HERE >

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Raia Prays For...
DESCRIPTION:World Heritage in Japan Screening Series V\nRAIA PRAYS FOR… \n\nDirector Hiroyuki Kurokawa\, 2015 (119 min.) \nJapanese with English subtitles  \nA heart-warming drama that follows Momoko\, who’s unhappy divorce discourages her to on with her life. She reluctantly joins a match making party and encounters an archaeologist named Kumagoro. He shows her around town and takes her to one of the archaeological digs in the Shirakami-Sanchi. The site is famous for artifacts from the Jomon period (3\,000 to 16\,500 years ago). When Kumagoro talks about the Jomon period\, it reminds Momoko of her mysterious connection to this ancient time and the experience helps her embark on a new chapter in her life. \nThe opening sequence starts off in Cat Ba Island in the Halong Bay\, Vietnam\, which is the home of the Golden-Headed Langur. The rest of the story was filmed in Aomori Prefecture\, and incorporates evocative visuals of the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Site. \nThe film is based on Akio Morisawa’s novel of the same title. \n \nSpecial thanks to Miyuki Kawasaka and MKII whose generous support made this screening of “Raia Prays For…” possible.
