SUMMARY:Tokyo BEFORE/AFTER Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:   \nTop images (left to right):\nNatsumi Hayashi\, Today’s Levitation 02/21/2011; Mika Ninagawa\, TOKYO INNOCENCE (2015); Image from photo album Nippon (1938).\n\nJapan Foundation Touring Exhibition: April 11 – July 11\, 2018\nTokyo BEFORE/AFTER\nPhotography Exhibition\n\n\nThis touring exhibition “Tokyo Before/After” features 80 pieces of photography in two groups. The historical works shot in Tokyo in the 1930s to 1940s are displayed in contrast with contemporary pieces created after 2010. \nBefore World War II\, the city of Tokyo in the 1930s and 1940s was about to complete the urban structural framework as a contemporary metropolis. Photographers took expressive advantage of the high technical level of their medium in order to fix the images of a vibrant\, urban space\, where the traditional and the modern co-existed and clashed at the same time. \n\nNobuyoshi Araki\, Tombeau Tokyo (2016/2017)\nIn contrast\, after 2010 Tokyo enfolds the fluid social condition of the era after the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake and is experiencing even greater transformation\, aiming towards the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. Rapid digitalization of the photographic method influences the characteristics of photographic expression; thus\, the individuality and viewpoint of each artist are more clearly visible than ever. \nIn comparing the two groups of photography from these different eras\, the figures of Tokyo in the past\, present\, and future are distinctively intensifying. Tokyo is drawing international attention in the light of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. We hope that exhibition visitors will deepen their understanding of the multi-faceted megacity of Tokyo through the photographs by Japanese artists in this touring exhibition. \nParticipating artists – “Before”\nArtists published in Koga (1932-1933):\nYasuzo Nojima\, Masao Horino\, Ihei Kimura\, Yotsuo Kono\, Hyoue Sakuma\, Koujiro Iida\, Hajime Okano \nArtists published in Nippon (1938):\nYonosuke Natori and others \nKineo Kuwabara  (1913-2007) \nParticipating artists – “After”\nNobuyoshi Araki\, Mika Ninagawa\, Motoyuki Daifu\, Shintaro Sato\, Shinya Arimoto\, Natsumi Hayashi\, Kenta Cobayashi\, Daido Moriyama \n  \nShow GALLERY HOURS \nMon 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nTues 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nWed 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nThurs 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nFri 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \n  \nSaturday openings: \n11:00 am – 4:00 pm \nApril 14\, 28\, May 12\, 26\, June 9\, 23\, July 7 \nDoors Open Toronto: May 26 & 27 \nClosed: Other Saturdays and Sundays \nMay 21 (Victoria Day) \n \n  \nADMISSION: FREE \n  \nShow The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n2 Bloor Street East \nHudson’s Bay Centre\, 3rd floor \nAbove Royal Bank of Canada \nwww.jftor.org 416.966.1600 x229 \n \n

SUMMARY:Ghost in the Shell 2: INNOCENCE
DESCRIPTION:GHOST IN THE SHELL 2: INNOCENCE \n@JFT\, free admission \nSaturday May 12\, 3:00 PM \nThursday May 24\, 6:30 PM \nDirected by Mamoru Oshii [2004] 99 minutes \nMamoru Oshii\, the visionary mind behind animated sci-fi hit Ghost In The Shell (1995)\, makes his long-awaited return to feature animation with this visually stunning\, thought-provoking sequel. \nIn this second installment of the high-action movie series\, cyborg detective Batou’s search for the Major Motoko Kusanagi is put on hold when a rash of gruesome murders plagues Tokyo. With every lead comes more questions. The culprits? Beloved robotic companions programmed to obey. With his mostly human partner Togusa in tow\, Batou is assigned to investigate what his superiors see as a possible terrorist threat. Through coming in contact with robots of all shapes and purposes\, he begins to question his very existence. As they delve deeper into the opaque recesses of their society\, Batou’s consciousness itself is hacked and his grip on reality becomes increasingly tenuous. The roots of the conspiracy are exposed upon journeying to a mysterious mansion in the independent trade zone of Hokkaido\, but it leads Batou into a trap and he is saved only by the intervention of his incorporeal former partner\, Motoko. He solves the case with her help\, and Motoko once again recedes into the vast expanses of the network. \nMamoru Oshii is a Japanese filmmaker\, television director\, screenwriter and producer. Some of his other notable works include live-actions and anime films such as Urusei Yatsura\, Avalon\, Patlabor\, The Sky Crawlers\, Kerberos Saga\, Blood\, Red Spectacles and Jin-Roh. He also directed the 2014 Japan-Canada co-production Garm Wars: The Last Druid\, the only English language film he has created. \nAwards and nominations for Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence\nNominated Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival \nFeature Film Award at Animation Kobe \nNihon SF Taisho Award \nOrient Express Award at the Catalan International Film Festival
