SUMMARY:Tokyo BEFORE/AFTER Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:   \nTop images (left to right):\nNatsumi Hayashi\, Today’s Levitation 02/21/2011; Mika Ninagawa\, TOKYO INNOCENCE (2015); Image from photo album Nippon (1938).\n\nJapan Foundation Touring Exhibition: April 11 – July 11\, 2018\nTokyo BEFORE/AFTER\nPhotography Exhibition\n\n\nThis touring exhibition “Tokyo Before/After” features 80 pieces of photography in two groups. The historical works shot in Tokyo in the 1930s to 1940s are displayed in contrast with contemporary pieces created after 2010. \nBefore World War II\, the city of Tokyo in the 1930s and 1940s was about to complete the urban structural framework as a contemporary metropolis. Photographers took expressive advantage of the high technical level of their medium in order to fix the images of a vibrant\, urban space\, where the traditional and the modern co-existed and clashed at the same time. \n\nNobuyoshi Araki\, Tombeau Tokyo (2016/2017)\nIn contrast\, after 2010 Tokyo enfolds the fluid social condition of the era after the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake and is experiencing even greater transformation\, aiming towards the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. Rapid digitalization of the photographic method influences the characteristics of photographic expression; thus\, the individuality and viewpoint of each artist are more clearly visible than ever. \nIn comparing the two groups of photography from these different eras\, the figures of Tokyo in the past\, present\, and future are distinctively intensifying. Tokyo is drawing international attention in the light of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. We hope that exhibition visitors will deepen their understanding of the multi-faceted megacity of Tokyo through the photographs by Japanese artists in this touring exhibition. \nParticipating artists – “Before”\nArtists published in Koga (1932-1933):\nYasuzo Nojima\, Masao Horino\, Ihei Kimura\, Yotsuo Kono\, Hyoue Sakuma\, Koujiro Iida\, Hajime Okano \nArtists published in Nippon (1938):\nYonosuke Natori and others \nKineo Kuwabara  (1913-2007) \nParticipating artists – “After”\nNobuyoshi Araki\, Mika Ninagawa\, Motoyuki Daifu\, Shintaro Sato\, Shinya Arimoto\, Natsumi Hayashi\, Kenta Cobayashi\, Daido Moriyama \n  \nShow GALLERY HOURS \nMon 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nTues 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nWed 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nThurs 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nFri 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \n  \nSaturday openings: \n11:00 am – 4:00 pm \nApril 14\, 28\, May 12\, 26\, June 9\, 23\, July 7 \nDoors Open Toronto: May 26 & 27 \nClosed: Other Saturdays and Sundays \nMay 21 (Victoria Day) \n \n  \nADMISSION: FREE \n  \nShow The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n2 Bloor Street East \nHudson’s Bay Centre\, 3rd floor \nAbove Royal Bank of Canada \nwww.jftor.org 416.966.1600 x229 \n \n

SUMMARY:ART OF THE GAME: Ukiyo-e Heroes
DESCRIPTION:@Anime North \nSaturday May 26\, 2018\, 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM \nInternational C\, Video Room 1 \nDelta Hotel\, 655 Dixon Rd\, Etobicoke\, ON M9W 1J3 \nAdmission: Saturday or Weekend pass to Anime North \nTicket info > \n  \nART OF THE GAME: Ukiyo-e Heroes \nDirected by Toru Tokikawa\, 2017 \nA journey of discovery into how a Canadian craftsman and an American designer\, with a father and son generation gap\, team up to revive the ancient art of Japanese woodblock prints (Ukiyo-e) by juxtaposing traditional art with pop culture icons: video game heroes such as Super Mario and Pokémon. Now they are making a new print inspired from a cult hit game Shadow of the Colossus. \nUkiyo-e: The traditional art form known worldwide as the “Face of Japan” has over several hundred years inspired Van Gogh\, Monet and Picasso to create their masterpieces. Today\, there are less than 10 remaining craftsmen in Japan. \nWe follow the making-of of their new print and witness the miraculous collaboration of the two contrasting artists: old-school and new-school\, artisanal and digital\, who need each other to create inspirational for a global audience. We also feature iconic Japanese craftsmen who work with them\, including Ichibei Iwano\, who is the 8th generation handmade Japanese paper grand master. \nLink to the Ukiyoe Heroes works > https://ukiyoeheroes.com/ \n  \n \nTrailer \n“ART OF THE GAME: Ukiyo-e Heroes” is available on: \niTunes (digital/rental  \nAmazon (Blu-ray) \n  \nWebsite: https://www.facebook.com/artofthegamedoc/ \nReviews & Updates: https://twitter.com/artofthegamedoc \nPosters: https://www.instagram.com/artofthegame \nIMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5706420/
