SUMMARY:Four Seasons of Gardens in Kyoto: Photographs by Katsuhiko Mizuno
DESCRIPTION:April 25 – July 31\, 2019\nFour Seasons of Gardens in Kyoto: Photographs by Katsuhiko Mizuno\n『四季の京都の庭園』写真　水野克比古\nJapanese culture has been strongly influenced by foreign culture and aesthetics from time to time\, such as Chinese Buddhism  in the ancient period\, Zen Buddhism in medieval times\, Confucian philosophy during the Edo Shogunate\, and European modern civilization in the Meiji period. Japanese gardens were not an exception and experienced constant transfiguration under foreign influence. However\, over the centuries\, although in different forms\, Japanese gardens maintained some kind of continuity. One of the unique characteristics of the Japanese garden is the relationship between man and nature. \nIn describing his own creations of over 40 years\, Kyoto-born photographer Katsuhiko Mizuno has said that nothing in his photos is either purely artificial or purely natural. He always sees someone’s hands or glances behind a tree or a rock in the gardens and captures the aura of timeless spirits with his camera. In the old capital of Kyoto even nature unfolds its seasonal cycle in the context of human history. \nApril 25 – July 31\, 2019 \nShow GALLERY HOURS \nMon 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nTues 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nWed 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nThurs 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nFri 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \n  \nSaturday openings: \n11:00 am – 4:00 pm \nApril 27\, May 11\, June 8&22\, July 6&20 \nDoors Open Toronto 10:00 am – 5:00 pm: May 25&26 \nClosed: Other Saturdays and Sundays \nVictoria Day May 20\, Canada Day: July 1 \nAdmission Free \n \n  \nADMISSION: FREE \n  \nShow The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n2 Bloor Street East \nHudson’s Bay Centre\, 3rd floor \nAbove Royal Bank of Canada \nwww.jftor.org 416.966.1600 x229

SUMMARY:Ryusuke Hamaguchi: HAPPY HOUR Part 3
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Ryusuke Hamaguchi Retrospective: The Theatre of Emotions co-presented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and Cinema Moderne taking place in Montreal\, we will be featuring three special film screenings of his films in Toronto as well. Director will be in attendance for some of the screenings. Stay tuned for more details! \n\nHAPPY HOUR\nPart 3 of 3 (1hr 54 min)\n@SPADINA THEATRE\, Alliance Francaise Toronto (Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi in attendance for Q+A) \nA powerful affirmation of the immersive potential of cinema. Happy Hour is a slow-burning epic chronicling the emotional journey of four thirtysomething women in the misty seaside city of Kobe. As they navigate the unsteady currents of their work\, domestic\, and romantic lives a sudden\, unexpected rift opens between that propels each to a new\, richer understanding of life and love. Filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s wise\, precisely observed\, compulsively watchable drama of friendship and midlife awakening runs over five hours\, yet the leisurely duration is not an indulgence but a strategy to create a novelistic space for everyday moments to become charged with possibility that yields a subtle emotional intensity rarely possible in a standard-length film. Happy Hour is far more than just an ordinary melodrama. It is a spectacularly complex and fiercely poetic rendering of the details of daily life in which ideas and feelings are swayed by the unseen forces of friendship and love and buffeted by the weight of deception\, loyalty and tradition. \nWinner of awards at major international festivals—including Locarno\, where stars Sachie Tanaka\, Hazuki Kikuchi\, Maiko Mihara and Rira Kawamura shared the Golden Leopard for Best Actress—Happy Hour has brought new attention to the work and career of one of Japan’s most talented young directors.
