SUMMARY:Four Seasons of Gardens in Kyoto: Photographs by Katsuhiko Mizuno
DESCRIPTION:April 25 – July 31\, 2019\nFour Seasons of Gardens in Kyoto: Photographs by Katsuhiko Mizuno\n『四季の京都の庭園』写真　水野克比古\nJapanese culture has been strongly influenced by foreign culture and aesthetics from time to time\, such as Chinese Buddhism  in the ancient period\, Zen Buddhism in medieval times\, Confucian philosophy during the Edo Shogunate\, and European modern civilization in the Meiji period. Japanese gardens were not an exception and experienced constant transfiguration under foreign influence. However\, over the centuries\, although in different forms\, Japanese gardens maintained some kind of continuity. One of the unique characteristics of the Japanese garden is the relationship between man and nature. \nIn describing his own creations of over 40 years\, Kyoto-born photographer Katsuhiko Mizuno has said that nothing in his photos is either purely artificial or purely natural. He always sees someone’s hands or glances behind a tree or a rock in the gardens and captures the aura of timeless spirits with his camera. In the old capital of Kyoto even nature unfolds its seasonal cycle in the context of human history. \nApril 25 – July 31\, 2019 \nShow GALLERY HOURS \nMon 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nTues 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nWed 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nThurs 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nFri 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \n  \nSaturday openings: \n11:00 am – 4:00 pm \nApril 27\, May 11\, June 8&22\, July 6&20 \nDoors Open Toronto 10:00 am – 5:00 pm: May 25&26 \nClosed: Other Saturdays and Sundays \nVictoria Day May 20\, Canada Day: July 1 \nAdmission Free \n \n  \nADMISSION: FREE \n  \nShow The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n2 Bloor Street East \nHudson’s Bay Centre\, 3rd floor \nAbove Royal Bank of Canada \nwww.jftor.org 416.966.1600 x229

SUMMARY:IKIGAI FILMS: Cutie and the Boxer
DESCRIPTION:Cutie and the Boxer\nDirected by Zachary Heinzerling (2013) 81 minutes \nThe Academy Award nominated Cutie and the Boxer is a moving account of the chaotic and unconventional 40-year love affair and creative partnership between action painter Ushio Shinohara and his wife\, Noriko\, also an artist. Ushio\, who punches canvases with paint-laden gloves\, is famous in Japan and in Manhattan’s art circles\, yet wider recognition has eluded him. Noriko\, 21 years his junior\, put her artistic ambitions on hold to be a wife and mother — and an assistant to her demanding husband. Now\, Noriko’s acclaimed “Cutie” series of drawings\, depicting the relationship between the title character and a volatile figure named Bullie\, is turning their world upside down. Winner\, Directing Award: U.S. Documentary\, 2013 Sundance Film Festival. \n \nIkigai Film Series \nWhat keeps you going? How do you stay happy\, and live a long life? These are some universal questions that will be explored in this film series that looks into the concept of IKIGAI. In Japanese\, IKIGAI生き甲斐 essentially means “reason for being” or the thing that makes your life worthwhile\, and we will catch a glimpse of how IKIGAI plays a role in the lives of remarkable Japanese people in these four documentaries.
