SUMMARY:Manga Hokusai Manga
DESCRIPTION:  \nManga Hokusai Manga:\nApproaching the Master’s Compendium\nfrom the Perspective of Contemporary Comics\n「マンガ・北斎・漫画」展 — 現代日本マンガから見た『北斎漫画』\nJanuary 16 – April 23\, 2020\nIn light of Japan’s contemporary comics and their global proliferation\, the 19th-century Hokusai Manga is attracting increasing interest. Fans worldwide tend to even regard this pictorial compendium by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai as the origin of today’s manga. But the outward appearance of these two types of manga does not immediately suggest a continuous tradition. Do present-day graphic narratives and the master’s “diverse drawings” share anything other than a name? Unlike past exhibitions of Hokusai’s work\, Manga Hokusai Manga approaches the Hokusai Manga from the perspective of contemporary Japanese comics\, focusing on genre\, pictorial storytelling and participatory culture rather than the integration of word and image or the role of popular characters. And instead of aiming at a historiographic verification of influences\, the exhibition invites viewers to ponder their own notions about manga by comparing works from different periods while exploring the diversity therein. \nJaqueline Berndt Professor\, Manga/Comics Theory\, Kyoto Seika University \n\n\nShow GALLERY HOURS \nMon 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nTues 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nWed 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nThurs 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nFri 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \n \n  \nShow The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n2 Bloor Street East \nHudson’s Bay Centre\, 3rd floor \nAbove Royal Bank of Canada \nwww.jftor.org 416.966.1600 x229 \n \n\nADMISSION: FREE \nSaturday openings: \n11:00 am – 4:00 pm \nJanuary 25\, February 8\, 22\, \nMarch 7\, 21\, April 4\, 18 \nClosed: Other Saturdays and Sundays \nFebruary 17 (Family Day) \nEaster closing April 10-13

SUMMARY:Cinéma Japonais: Ugetsu Monogatari
DESCRIPTION:Cinéma JAPONAIS: Thursday Movies @Alliance Francaise \n  \n  \nCo-Presented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and the Alliance Francaise\, Toronto \n@ Alliance Francaise\, SPADINA THEATRE\, 24 Spadina Rd. \nFree admission\, no reservations required   \nUGETSU MONOGATARI 雨月物語\nJanuary 16\, 2020 @7:30 PM \nDirected by Kenji Mizoguchi 1953\, 97 min. Japanese with English subtitles \nUgetsu\, directed by master filmmaker Kenji Mizoguchi\, is a beautiful supernatural tale set in 16th century Kyoto and Shiga prefecture. The films screenwriters Matsutaro Kawaguchi and Yoshikata Yoda wove together two stories from Akinari Uede‘s best-known work\, Ugetsu Monogatari (Tales of Moonlight and Rain\, 1776) and French writer Guy de Maupassant‘s Decore! \, 1883. The two stories from Ugetsu Monogatari\, The House in the Thicket and The Lust of the White Serpent (Asaji ga Yado and Jasei no In) are part of a collection of supernatural tales\, which are largely taken from traditional Japanese and Chinese ghost stories. \nBy the time he made Ugetsu\, Kenji Mizoguchi was already an elder statesman of Japanese cinema\, fiercely revered by Akira Kurosawa and other directors of a younger generation. And with this exquisite ghost story\, a fatalistic wartime tragedy\, he created a touchstone of his art\, his long takes and sweeping camera guiding the viewer through a delirious narrative about two villagers whose pursuit of fame and fortune leads them far astray from their loyal wives. Moving between the terrestrial and the otherworldly\, Ugetsu reveals essential truths about the ravages of war\, the plight of women\, and the pride of men. \nThe film stars Machiko Kyō\, Mitsuko Mito\, Kinuyo Tanaka\, Masayuki Mori\, and Ei Ozawa. The film won the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival and was nominated an Academy Award for for best costume. \nEssay “Ugetsu on the other shore” by Phillip Lopate from the Criterion Collection \nMore info here > \nTrailer below >
