SUMMARY:A Sense of Movement: Japanese Sports Posters
DESCRIPTION:A Sense of Movement: Japanese Sports Posters\nSports Poster Exhibition\nApril 20—September 9\, 2023\n \nA Sense of Movement: Japanese Sports Posters\, co-presented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion\, is an exhibition that explores the connection between Japanese graphic design and sports. \nPrior to Toronto\, the in-person presentations in Sydney (October 2021 – January 2022) and in Paris (December 2022 – March 2023) featured a selection of 31 posters by eight Japanese graphic designers. This exhibition then arrived in Toronto with an extended range of exhibits\, a total of 68 pieces by 24 designers from young professionals who are currently active in the field to great masters who led the dawn of graphic design. The exhibition introduces the means by which these uniquely creative minds convey sport and its “sense of movement” through two-dimensional printed media. \nThis exhibition was planned and inspired by an online lecture by Eishi KITAZAWA\, curator at Ginza Graphic Gallery’s “Conjuring a Sense of Movement: Japanese Graphic Designers & Sports Posters” organized by The Japan Foundation\, London in September 2020. The exhibition was born online and has been growing in-person world-wide. \nHere in this extended selection the compositional beauty\, dynamism and humour expressed within these Japanese posters are communicated through the perspective of sports. You experience the fruit of Japan’s rich graphic design culture during the half century between the first Olympic Games in Japan and the present time. \n \nExhibitors: AOBA Masuteru\, ASABA Katsumi\, FUKUDA Shigeo\, KAMEKURA Yūsaku\, KASAI Kaoru\, SATOH Taku\, TANAKA Ikkō\, UENISHI Yuri\, YOKOO Tadanori\, SANO Kenjirō\, SOEDA Takayuki\, NAGAI Hiroaki\, WATANABE Yoshie\, NODA Nagi\, MATSUNAGA Shin\, ISHIOKA Eiko\, SAKAE Ryōta\, HOSOYA Gan\, KUBOTA Arata\, KOSUGI Kōichi\, HATTORI Kazunari\, YOSHIDA Katsu\, NODA Sayo (Hakuhōdō)\, GROOVISIONS \n \nAdmission: FREE \nDue to the security of the exhibition pieces and COVID-19 precautions\, we ask our patrons to register for our hourly timeslots in advance. Having no skill\, money\, or even a full set of drums\, a feared trio of high school delinquents nevertheless decide they are destined for musical glory in a quest to impress their only friend Aya\, avoid a rival gang\, and – most importantly – jam out. \nWinner of the Best Animated Feature Grand Prize at the 2019 Ottawa International Animation Festival and Best Original Music Award at the 2020 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. \nThis film screening is a part of the Together We Rise Arts Festival held at the Scarborough Civic Centre\, Albert Campbell Square\, and Cineplex Cinemas Scarborough on June 2 & 3. \nRegister for tickets \n \nFilmmaker Biography: \nIWAISAWA Kenji was born in Tokyo in 1981. After graduating high school\, he apprenticed under TERUO Ishii. He began working with video production on location for live-action movies and started producing animation on the side. In 2008 he released his first animated work\, Fukuraicho\, Man in the Tunnel Alley. Subsequently\, after producing a number of mainly animated shorts\, he began working on his independently financed film\, ON-GAKU: Our Sound. \nAnimated almost entirely by Director Iwaisawa\, and featuring a lead performance by Japanese alt-rock legend SAKAMOTO Shintaro\, ON-GAKU brings its own sound and vision to the OHASHI Hiroyuki manga from which it was adapted. With pitch-perfect deadpan humor\, the film presents a highly original take on the beloved slacker comedy: a lofi buddy film with a blaring musical finale that will leave you wanting an immediate encore. \nFrom Director Iwaisawa: \nI was able to realize this project with effort and guts.\nI didn’t have the budget\, so I was prepared to complete it using time\, no matter how long it took.  \n \n \n \nRelated Programming:\n \nON-GAKU: Our Sound is the closing screening of our LIVE HOUSE FILMS\, a mini-series of three films celebrating celebration of J-rock and the Japanese indie music scene. \nTogether We Rise Arts Festival \nThe Together We Rise Festival is a celebration of the Greater Toronto Area’s Asian diaspora’s heritage and artists featuring multi-disciplinary arts programming. The festival is a first-of-its-kind event for Scarborough\, presenting multiple disciplines and commissioning original\, professional works\, and it invites the wider Scarborough community to celebrate Asian Heritage month through this monumental event.
