In the 17th and 18th century Netsuke developed rapidly in the kimono fashion culture. For kimonos\, which had no pockets\, Netsuke acted as toggles providing daily-life convenience for carrying things such as pouches\, medicine cases\, and smoking pipe cases. Since Japanese fashion had been westernized in the mid-19th century\, Netsuke receded from practical use\, but still attracted artistic interest not only within Japan but worldwide.  \nIn this exhibition\, 65 contemporary pieces which are all wood-carved are on display. SAITŌ Bishū\, a master Netsuke carver\, describes the charm and attraction of Netsuke as “Freedom amidst constraints.” Netsuke are made under certain restrictions\, such as needing two holes to run the cord through and requiring it to be round to avoid getting caught. The carvers express themselves as freely as possible under these constraints\, which\, in the end\, magically stimulate the imaginations of both creators and viewers. \nBook your visit here \n \n\nDue to the COVID-19 precautions\, we are open in limited hourly slots\, 4 days a week. DESCRIPTION:Live Foley Workshop: Sounds of Cinema with KOYAMA Goro\nTuesday\, October 17\, 6:30PM (ET) Doors open 6:00PM | Live Workshop | Japan Foundation\, Toronto Event Hall \nTo kick off our Halloween celebrations\, join us for a fun and quirky workshop with Emmy Award winner KOYAMA Goro as he demonstrates the amusing and often strange process of “foley” — the art of creating sound effects for film\, television\, and video games. \nThe workshop is 90 minutes long followed by a Q&A session. A segment of the workshop involves audience participation.  \nPresented in English. Free admission. Register below (bottom of page).  \n\n Artist Biography – KOYAMA Goro: \nBorn 1973 in Saitama\, Japan\, KOYAMA Goro loved Hollywood movies as a young boy. In 1991\, he moved to Canada to study English and learned that there was an active and flourishing film industry there. Upon visiting a sound studio in Toronto\, Goro discovered his passion in the art of sound in filmmaking. Goro has been a foley artist since 1994 and has since garnered over 300 credits in films\, television\, and video games. \nHis credits include: Barbie (2023)\, Little Mermaid (2022)\, White Noise (2021)\, Don’t Look Up (2021)\, Dune (2021)\, Mary Poppins Returns (2018)\, Blade Runner 2047 (2017)\, and Cloverfield (2008)\, just to name a few.
