In the 17th and 18th century Netsuke developed rapidly in the kimono fashion culture. For kimonos\, which had no pockets\, Netsuke acted as toggles providing daily-life convenience for carrying things such as pouches\, medicine cases\, and smoking pipe cases. Since Japanese fashion had been westernized in the mid-19th century\, Netsuke receded from practical use\, but still attracted artistic interest not only within Japan but worldwide. \nIn this exhibition\, 65 contemporary pieces which are all wood-carved are on display. SAITŌ Bishū\, a master Netsuke carver\, describes the charm and attraction of Netsuke as “Freedom amidst constraints.” Netsuke are made under certain restrictions\, such as needing two holes to run the cord through and requiring it to be round to avoid getting caught. The carvers express themselves as freely as possible under these constraints\, which\, in the end\, magically stimulate the imaginations of both creators and viewers. \nBook your visit here \n \n\nDue to the COVID-19 precautions\, we are open in limited hourly slots\, 4 days a week. Advanced\, time-specific reservation is recommended. Hand-sanitization at the entry and wearing face-coverings on our premises are recommended. \nBook your visit at eventbrite.ca \n\nRelated Events: \nNetsuke Collection at the ROM\, Toronto \n\n\n \nSaturday\, October 28\, 2:30PM – 4:00PM (ET)Talk/Presentation | Admission Free | Registration Required \nPresented by Dr. TAKESUE AkikoBishop White Committee Associate Curator of Japanese Art & Culture\, Royal Ontario Museum \nRegister Here   \n  \n \nGallery-Goers\, Don’t Miss JFT’s Netsuke Library Collection! \nWhether you are a future gallery-goer or have already been captivated by the Contemporary Wood-Carved NETSUKE exhibition at JFT Gallery\, add an extra layer of appreciation by checking out JFT Library’s items! There are no assigned readings — you choose a book\, manga\, ebook\, or audiobook about Japan\, or any title by Japanese author(s) that you want to recommend to fellow participants. \n\nWHY JOIN JFT BOOK CLUB “WITH SILENT READING TIME”?\nMany of us simply want more time to read but cannot squeeze the time in\, as we have too many distractions and interruptions in our daily lives to concentrate on reading. JFT Book Club with Silent Reading Time offers a sanctuary to indulge in the simple pleasure of reading\, surrounded by fellow book enthusiasts who share your love for literature. \nIn addition\, we provide an optional space for those who wish to connect and discuss their reading experiences with others. Engage in conversations at your comfort level and learn new perspectives from other book lovers from different cultural backgrounds that you wouldn’t gain from reading alone! It’s a safe space where your thoughts and impressions are valued\, regardless of whether you choose to actively participate or quietly absorb the conversations around you. \nWe welcome both seasoned book club members and first-time participants to discover the joy of silent reading without the pressures of finishing an assigned book on time and/or participating in mandatory discussions. \nRegister Here     \nIf you have any questions or concerns\, please don’t hesitate to contact us in person\, by phone\, email\, or via contact form. \n\nHOW DOES THE UPCOMING JFT BOOK CLUB WORK?\n\nOnce you register for the event\, find a book to read based on the criteria listed in WHAT BOOK TO BRING?
