SUMMARY:Japanese Tadoku Book Club (August 24\, 2026)
DESCRIPTION:  \nMonday August 24 | 7:30pm – 8:30pm ET | Online \nLet’s enjoy reading in Japanese and talk about the books! \nWhat is “Tadoku”? \nThe word “ta” (多) means “a lot” and “doku” (読) means “to read”\, so “tadoku” literally means “read-a-lot”. You can read books suitable to your Japanese reading level. Start with easy books you can enjoy without using a dictionary! \nFor this book club event\, you will read online books at your own pace on your own schedule before the session\, and prepare Tadoku Journal entries. During the book club event\, we will start with a 5-minute introduction and then provide 20 minutes of silent reading. Finally\, you will be divided into small groups to share about the books you read\, either in English or Japanese\, for 30 minutes. \nParticipation Requirements:　Basic Japanese proficiency preferred.  Advanced-level Japanese learners and native Japanese speakers are welcome to join too! \nPlease refer to the Guidance for Online Tadokukai and Reading Journal files for more details! All levels of Japanese learners are welcome to join too! \nWe will hold 2 sessions providing the same content: in-person at the Japan Foundation\, Toronto during the lunch hour (12:00-1:00 pm ET) and online in the evening (6:30-7:30 pm ET). If you are near the Yonge/Bloor area in Toronto\, why not stop by during your lunch break and learn more about Japanese language and interesting cultural information? Or join us on Zoom in the evening if that better suits your schedule/location. These sessions are B.Y.O.B. (“bring your own bento“)\, so please feel free to bring your lunch/dinner with you! \nIn conjunction with the “I Love Sushi” exhibition taking place in the JFT Gallery from September 15 – October 9\, 2026\, this session is titled “I Love Sushi”. Come join us and learn Japanese words and phrases related to sushi\, along with interesting facts about this theme!  This talk will cover some information shared at the session based on the same topic last September\, but will include additional content and insights. Join us for the talk\, and take the opportunity to explore the “I Love Sushi” exhibition during your visit! \nThis session is free to join but registration is required. As we prepare to relocate\, this will be our final in-person celebration at our current library location and the final Saturday that the physical library will be open to the public. \nSome of our library items are selected for giveaway\, including books\, manga\, magazines\, CDs\, DVDs\, Blu-rays\, and VHSs in English\, Japanese\, and French. Find a treasure to take home and help us pass our collection on to new readers! \nAt our hands-on origami station\, you’re invited to fold a paper butterfly and pair it with an ema (絵馬)-inspired message card. Drawing on the Japanese tradition of writing wishes and messages on wooden plaques\, you can share a memory\, wish\, cultural discovery\, or message for the future. A butterfly is also included in the Japan Foundation’s logo\, whose form represents the cyclical exchange of culture: our wish to deliver Japanese culture to the world while conveying diverse cultures of the world back to Japan.
