SUMMARY:Danjuro Exhibition Talk I
DESCRIPTION:ARAGOTO\, Family Traditions of Ichikawa Clan\n SHIBARAKU\, YA-NO-NE (Arrow Sharpening) KENUKI (The Tweezers)\n市川宗家の藝: 荒事『暫』『矢の根』『毛抜』\nTalk and DVD presentation by Toshi Aoyagi \nThe Ichikawa family has been positioned as central to the Kabuki world\, in particular in Edo (Tokyo) style Kabuki. Danjuro I (1660-1704) originated the Aragoto acting style\, which portrays fearsome heroes. The emotional highlight of the drama is emphasized by the electrifying Mie stop motion\, which creates an effect similar to the use of the close-up in film. Bold Kumadori make-up and forced eye movements establish the focus of the entire stage. Over-the-top gigantic costumes must surely have inspired the design of Transformer robots in the twentieth century. However\, the audiences of Edo saw the purifying\, divine power in those childlike minds of their super heroes. They were more than heroes\, but gods in splendour.

SUMMARY:Danjuro Exhibition Talk II
DESCRIPTION:KANJINCHŌ The Subscription Scroll\n歌舞伎十八番の内『勧進帳』 \nTalk and DVD presentation by Toshi Aoyagi \nOne of the most popular\, frequently performed Kabuki plays\, KANJINCHŌis based on the story of the flight of the accused former hero Yoshitsune as he attempted to pass through a barrier gate with his chief retainer\, Benkei\, and his party of retainers. The confrontation of three men at the barrier creates a thrilling melodrama which displays prototypical Japanese characteristics. The barrier officer\, Togashi\, is a bureaucrat who is faithful to the system\, but humanely sympathetic. Yoshitsune is a helplessly abandoned\, symbolic noble\, who is protected by Benkei\, a wise\, independent leader. \nThe story is brought to the stage accompanied by one of the most beautiful scores of Nagauta music. KANJINCHŌ contains multiple styles\, such as sophisticated dance sequences and breathtakingly tense exchanges of spoken dialogue.

SUMMARY:Danjuro Exhibition Talk III
DESCRIPTION:Akira Kurosawa’s KANJINCHŌ\n“The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail” (1945) 59 min.\nBased on “Kanjinchō” Kabuki play -Tora no O wo fumu Otokotachi-『虎の尾を踏む男達』 黒沢明監督、大河内伝次郎、榎本健一\nTalk and DVD presentation by Toshi Aoyagi \nWhen the end of World War II was approaching and Tokyo burnt-out by air-raids\, Akira Kurosawa shot his version of KANJINCHŌ. Ōkōchi Denjirō\, a samurai film star portrayed Benkei\, and vaudeville superstar Ken’ichi Enomoto appeared as a comical porter. By adding extra characters in the film\, Kurosawa made a clearer separation between the bureaucracy and the momentary miracle of friendship between Togashi and Benkei\, representing the only hope in a failed\, dysfunctional social system.
