SUMMARY:Tanabata Star Festival 2023 at JFT Library
DESCRIPTION:Thank you to all those who joined Tanabata Star Festival 2023 at JFT Library! \nHere are some lovely comments from our patrons who completed our questionnaire and agreed to share: \n🌟 “I really loved the Tanabata festival. I can get to know the story behind it and tried Yukata and made a wish on a bamboo tree. I made a new friend too today. It was a nice experience.” — Jessica \n🌟 “JFT’s Tanabata Festival was an amazing chance to really experience some amazing parts of the rich Japanese culture. Fishing for origami fishes was very creative to do in their part and was a fun experience for me! Being able to write wishes on the Tanzaku and hanging it on their makeshift bamboo tree inside the library was also a great experience to try out. Seeing the colorful strips of paper hanging on the bamboo leaves was also just very beautiful. Usually the library is very quiet and there’s not a lot of people at the same time\, but today\, there were so many visitors\, and you could see and feel how excited everyone was to wear Yukata’s and get their pictures taken! I really hope they keep doing this every year and I definitely recommend more people to go to them if they are looking for ways to delve deeper into everything Japanese. .” — Arianne \n🌟”This year’s Tanabata Festival is even better than last year’s! I was excited to try on Yukata for the first time in my life. Once dressed in Yukata\, I had to walk in small steps as the range of motion was restricted by the clothes. I also felt I needed to walk and move with a nice posture like an elegant and proud woman would do. That’s such an educational experience for me. I really appreciate the warm welcome and hard work of all staff and volunteers who made this experience memorable. Thank you!” — Anonymous \nFor those who have not yet had the chance to fill in the questionnaire\, it would be of great help to us if you could complete this by Friday\, July 21st. As we strive to continually improve and create more inspiring experiences for our patrons\, your feedback will play a vital role in shaping our future events! \n\n  \n  \n \n\n Tanabata Star Festival (七夕祭り) is a traditional Japanese festival where people make wishes and send them to the stars. Mark your calendar for a special day of cultural exploration\, creativity\, and heartfelt wishes at JFT Library!\n \n*No RSVP is required. Bring your friends and family to this immersive cultural experience! \n**Updated July 6\, 2023: You’re on camera! SUMMARY:FukuBookLoan (Lucky Bags) 2024 @ JFT Library
DESCRIPTION:The much-loved event inspired by the Japanese New Year’s culture of Fukubukuro (福袋\, “lucky bag”)\, returns to JFT Library in 2024 with a new name – “FukuBookLoan!” \nStarting Friday\, January 5th\, 2024\, JFT Library patrons can grab a FukuBookLoan bag\, containing secret selections of books and/or audiovisual materials to borrow from the Library. Enjoy serendipitous discovery from a curated selection of novels\, manga\, DVD/BR\, and more books about Japan or by Japanese authors! \n\nWhat is Fukubukuro (福袋)?\nFukubukuro (福袋\, “lucky bag”) is a Japanese New Year custom where people buy mysterious sealed bags that are sold for a set price during the New Year period. Many shops\, businesses and department stores take part in this tradition and the sales begin on the first business day of the New Year. They typically contain products centred around a specific theme. Usually\, the bags are sold at a substantial discount and much less expensive than if you were to buy each item in the bag separately. The Fukubukuro is a very popular\, thrilling and highly anticipated event and people often even line up for hours to get the bags. \nThe term “fuku” (福) means “good fortune” or “luck”\, and “fukuro” (袋) – conjugated into “bukuro” – means “bag”. \n*The items in the JFT Library’s FukuBookLoan bags are for borrowing only\, and not for sales or giveaways. You must check them out and return them to the Library by the due date. \n\nHow to participate in the FukuBookLoan event\n*Please note the FukuBookLoan event ends when the bags run out or on Tuesday\, January 30th\, 2024 at 4:30 pm (whichever is faster). \n1. Select a theme tag and pick up a FukuBookLoan bag with the corresponding theme at the Library Counter\n・Visit the JFT Library during the Library’s opening hours in January\n・Pick up a bag-shaped note with a bag theme from the FukuBookLoan table. *One bag maximum per library cardholder\n・Bring the note to the library counter. Staff will grab a bag from the storage and proceed with the checkouts.\n・Each bag contains 3 to 4 items. Please note those items will be counted toward the maximum number of items that can be checked out from the Library\, which is 15 total items (a 5-item limit for periodicals and audiovisual materials). \n3. Enjoy serendipitous discovery & share your thoughts!\n・Take the FukuBookLoan bag home and enjoy discovering what’s inside!\n・If you are an active social media user\, feel free to post about the items in the bag and the FukuBookLoan experience using the hashtag #JFTLibrary \n4. The apparently unremarkable Natsumi lives in a modern Tokyo apartment with her husband and two sons: she does the laundry\, goes to the supermarket\, visits friends\, and gossips with neighbors. Tracing her conversations and interactions with her family and friends as they blend seamlessly into her own infernally buzzing internal monologue\, Mild Vertigo explores the dizzying reality of being unable to locate oneself in the endless stream of minutiae that forms a lonely life confined to a middle-class home\, where both everything and nothing happens. With shades of Clarice Lispector\, Elena Ferrante\, and Kobo Abe\, this verbally acrobatic novel by the esteemed novelist\, essayist\, and critic Mieko Kanai—whose work enjoys a cult status in Japan—is a disconcerting and radically imaginative portrait of selfhood in late-stage capitalist society. \nIn the vertigo lurking at the depths of a very ordinary life\, Mieko Kanai succeeds in uncovering the tranquility and cruelty that exist side by side. — Yoko Ogawa\, author of The Memory Police\n \n— from Publisher’s website \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nBorn in 1947\, Mieko Kanai is a novelist\, poet\, essayist\, and critic. She has published around thirty novels and short-story collections\, and her critical essays have been featured in Japanese newspapers and magazines for almost fifty years. In the English-speaking world\, she is perhaps best known for her story “Rabbits\,” a gory retelling of Alice in Wonderland where a young girl puts on a suit made of freshly skinned rabbit fur. \nABOUT THE TRANSLATOR\nPolly Barton is a writer and Japanese translator based in Bristol. Her translations include Aoko Matsuda’s Where the Wild Ladies Are\, Kikuko Tsumura’s There’s No Such Thing as an Easy Job\, and Tomoka Shibasaki’s Spring Garden. In 2019\, she won the Fitzcarraldo Editions Essay Prize for her debut book Fifty Sounds. \n\nABOUT THE MODERATOR\nWriter Kris Kosaka moved to Japan in 1996 to accept a position teaching high school English at an international school. She fell in love with the country and soon met her future husband\, Makoto. They made their home in Kamakura\, where Kris continued teaching and writing while raising their two children. Although temporarily in Tampa\, FL (her hometown) while their daughter completes her high school education in the States\, Kris’s heart is in Japan. In her spare time\, Kris enjoys reading and running. Kris is a frequent contributor to The Japan Times\, and a regular columnist for their Books pages. \n\n \nPrevious Book Clubs\n\nJFT Book Club (Hybrid) – With Silent Reading Time – Holiday Reading Recommendations – November 16\, 2023 \n\nJFT Book Club (Hybrid) – Manga: Planetes by YUKIMURA Makoto – September 28\, 2023 \n\nJFT Book Club (Hybrid) – With Silent Reading Time – LGBTQIA+ Books -June 20\, 2023 \n\nJFT Book Club Online – Manga: After the Rain by MAYUZUKI Jun -April 24\, 2023 \n\nJFT Book Club Online – Three Short Works by NISHI Kanako: On beauty\, the Female Experience and Othering – February 8\, 2023 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Temple Alley Summer by KASHIWABA Sachiko – September 15\, 2022 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Manga – June 15\, 2022 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Bring Your Own Book – April 13\, 2022 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: The Woman in the Purple Skirt by Natsuko Imamura– February 9\, 2022 \n\nJFT Book Club Online:Colorful by Eto Mori– November 10\, 2021 \n\n \nJFT Book Club Online: Heaven by Mieko Kawakami – August 12\, 2021 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Manga – June 10\, 2021 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Bring Your Own Book – April 8\, 2021 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: The Memory Police – February 11\, 2021 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Breasts and Egg – November 5\, 2020 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Travel Japan – August 20\, 2020 \n\nJFT Book Club Online – June 11\, 2020 \n\nMemoirs of a Polar Bear – February 20\, 2020 \n\nThe Little House – December 12\, 2019 \n\nMystery Book Club – October 10\, 2019 \n\nMovies and Books – August 8\, 2019 \n\nBooks and Tea – June 6\, 2019
