Enjoy serendipitous discovery from a curated selection of novels\, manga\, DVD/BR\, and more books about Japan or by Japanese authors! You might discover your new favourite authors\, amazing film titles\, and intriguing topics that you never knew existed! \n\nWhat is Fukubukuro (福袋)?\nFukubukuro (福袋\, “lucky bag”) is a Japanese New Year custom where people buy mysterious sealed bags that are sold for a set price during the New Year period. Many shops\, businesses and department stores take part in this tradition and the sales begin on the first business day of the New Year. They typically contain products centred around a specific theme. Usually\, the bags are sold at a substantial discount and much less expensive than if you were to buy each item in the bag separately. The Fukubukuro is a very popular\, thrilling and highly anticipated event and people often even line up for hours to get the bags. \nThe term “fuku” (福) means “good fortune” or “luck”\, and “fukuro” (袋) – conjugated into “bukuro” – means “bag”. \n*The items in the JFT Library’s FukuBookLoan bags are for borrowing only\, and not for sales or giveaways. You must check them out at the library counter and return them to the Library by the due date. \n\nHow to participate in the FukuBookLoan event\n*Please note the FukuBookLoan event ends when all bags are gone or on Friday\, January 31st\, 2025 at 4:30 pm (whichever is faster). \n1. He specializes in the folktales of his native region of Iwate\, Northern Japan.   \n\n Seiko Shirafuji Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture\, she is a singer and folk dancer and a retired medical doctor. Seiko has been performing in community events and local festivals since 1995. \n\n Yusuke Tanaka A veteran translator\, writer\, director of the Katari since 1994. He has been telling his own adaptations of Japanese folklore in many places such as New York\, Seoul\, Kyoto\, Tokyo and Sapporo. \n\n Rui Umezawa A Toronto writer and storyteller. His novel\, The Truth About Death and Dying was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Book Prize for Best First Book. His past participation in Katari inspired his latest publication\, Strange Tales Afar: Tales of the Supernatural from Old Japan. \n\nMusicians\n Aiko Fujii Started learning koto\, shamisen and jiuta at an early age. She holds a koto teacher’s diploma in the Ikuta school from the Kyoto Todokai. Since 2017\, she has experienced many concerts abroad\, collaborative ensembles with other genres and teaching. \n\n Gerry McGoldrick He has been involved with traditional Japanese music for over thirty years\, and has played shamisen and shakuhachi in a variety of styles in Japan and Canada. A professor at Toronto Metropolitan University. \n\n Martin Posen He is an acoustic guitarist and composer and is currently playing and studying both Minyo and Tsugaru styles of shamisen. \n\nDancers\nMichiko Abe-Kozlowski Born in Hokkaido\, Michiko is a jewelry designer and retired law clerk and a member of the Urara Mimbu-kai\, she enjoys learning and sharing traditional Japanese folk dances. In her first talk in Canada\, she will cover the fundamentals of reading manga\, its genres\, publishers\, and age ratings\, as well as its impact on literacy and social-emotional development. She will also discuss collection development\, including essential resources\, recommended titles\, shelving strategies\, reader’s advisory\, and digital content. Whether you’re a library worker\, educator\, parent\, or manga enthusiast\, this session offers valuable insights into manga’s growing role in education and libraries. \nThe lecture will be followed by the exclusive tour of the Japan Foundation\, Toronto Library by our library staff. With the Jillian’s insights from the lecture in mind\, explore the world of 20\,000+ Japan-related books and audiovisuals\, including approx. 3\,000 manga books in collection! \n\nJillian Rudes is the founder of Manga in Libraries\, an organization that provides manga readers’ advisory lists and hosts manga webinars\, workshops\, and panels. She is also a New York State dually certified English teacher and school librarian\, currently serving as the school librarian at a grade 6–12 public school in New York City. Jillian is also the President-Elect of the American Library Association’s (ALA) Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT). In 2020\, she received the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Collaborative School Library Award\, and in 2022\, she was honored with the American Library Association’s (ALA) Scholastic Library Publishing Award. Jillian was also recognized as the “Manga Maven” by Library Journal and selected as a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2022. As a children’s programmer at Toronto Public Library\, she borrowed kamishibai kits and did outreach storytelling in branches and for several schools. When she had gone through the library’s collection\, the students asked her for more. Sam began writing kamishibai stories\, drawing on her life experiences\, love of Japanese culture and knowledge gained from the East Asian Studies program at University of Toronto\, where she was studying part-time. She has completed 9 stories with illustrations by three artists. She has read her stories to hundreds of children and families in schools\, libraries\, storytelling festivals\, Wee Asian Film Festival and various events. \n \n  \nOrigami Fishing Pond\n11:30 am – 1:00 pm\, 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm\, 4:00 pm – 4:30 pm \nGoldfish catching is a quintessential festival activity in Japan. DESCRIPTION:  \nWrap your book in Japan style! \nDid you know that in Japan\, when you buy a book at a bookstore\, you are often asked: “Would you like a cover?” \nThe bookstore staff will then carefully wrap your book in a perfectly fitted paper cover. These book covers (or dust covers) are more than just decoration; they protect books from scratches\, preserve their appearance\, and allow readers privacy when reading in public. On trains\, in cafés\, or in parks across Japan\, you’ll often see people reading books wrapped in these covers. \nNow\, you can experience this tradition in Toronto! Bring along a book you’d like to cover—it can be your current read or a book gift for someone special!\nYou can use paper provided at the library\, or bring your favorite wrapping paper or paper shopping bag to make it personal. \nIn Japan\, autumn is often called 「読書の秋」(dokusho no aki)—the season of reading. DESCRIPTION:Make a wish for the New Year with Japanese Calligraphy (書道\, “shodō”)! \nCreate your own calligraphy-inspired bookmark and welcome the New Year with meaningful words\, resolutions\, or wishes! After the success of our March casual calligraphy event\, we’re excited to bring back a special hands-on experience to casually try Japanese Calligraphy using fude pens (brush pens)—with extended library hours until 6:00 pm. While no professional calligraphy instructor will be present\, our library staff will be on hand throughout the day to offer basic guidance and help create custom samples upon request. \nNo RSVP required—a drop-in\, first-come\, first-served activity for anyone wanting to get creative and craft a bookmark to carry wishes into the New Year! Drop by the JFT Library anytime on Tuesday\, December 16 between 11:30 am—6:00 pm! \n*Participation age: Adults and Children (around 6 years old and up) are welcome to participate.
