Most of the island’s inhabitants are oblivious to these changes\, while those few imbued with the power to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police\, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten. \nWhen a young woman who is struggling to maintain her career as a novelist discovers that her editor is in danger from the Memory Police\, she concocts a plan to hide him beneath her floorboards. As fear and loss close in around them\, they cling to her writing as the last way of preserving the past. \nA surreal\, provocative fable about the power of memory and the trauma of loss\, The Memory Police is a stunning new work from one of the most exciting contemporary authors writing in any language. Makiko has traveled to Tokyo in search of an affordable breast enhancement procedure. She is accompanied by Midoriko\, who has recently grown silent\, finding herself unable to voice the vague yet overwhelming pressures associated with growing up. Her silence proves a catalyst for each woman to confront her fears and frustrations. \nOn another hot summer’s day ten years later\, Natsu\, on a journey back to her native city\, struggles with her own indeterminate identity as she confronts anxieties about growing old alone and childless. SUMMARY:The JFT Library Book Club - Memoirs of a Polar Bear with The European Book Club
DESCRIPTION:JFT Book Club Special Edition with The European Book Club \nOn Thursday February 20\, 2020\, the JFT Book Club will join the European Book Club and discuss Memoirs of a Polar Bear by Yoko Tawada. \n\nMemoirs of a Polar Bear stars three generations of talented writers and performers. Famous stars of the literary world\, the circus\, and the zoo\, they happen to be polar bears who move human society. In part one\, the matriarch\, enjoying “the intimacy of being alone with my pen\,” accidentally writes a bestselling autobiography in the Soviet Union. In part two\, her daughter Tosca moves to East Germany and pioneers a thrilling circus act. And Tosca’s son – the last of their line – is Knut\, born in part three and raised by a human keeper in relatively happy circumstances in the Berlin zoo. \nYoko Tawada was born in Tokyo in 1960\, moved to Hamburg when she was twenty-two\, and then to Berlin in 2006. She writes in both Japanese and German\, and has published several books – stories\, novels\, poems\, plays\, essays – in both languages. SUMMARY:What is Normal? : In Conversation with Author Sayaka Murata
DESCRIPTION:Sayaka Murata has a very important question that she asks in all of her work: What is normal? And how does normal become normal? Her first novel to appear in English\, Convenience Store Woman\, is no exception to this line of thematic inquiry. In this conversation\, her first appearance in North America\, Murata will discuss with Jocelyne Allen how her questions about social norms inform her work\, from her writing process and early influences\, the treatment of women in Japanese society\, to her own years of working in convenience stores. Murata will also read from her award-winning novel and talk about the convenience store in Japan\, its place in Japanese society\, and how it differs from convenience stores in Canada. \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto and TIFA (Toronto International Festival of Authors) look forward to hosting award-winning author Sayaka Murata. \nFor books by Sayaka Murata available in the Japan Foundation\, Toronto library\, click here. \n\nSayaka Murata was born and raised in Chiba\, Japan (just east of Tokyo)\, and then attended Tamagawa University on the western edge of Tokyo. She is known for exploring nonconformity in society for men and women\, particularly with regard to gender roles\, parenthood\, and sex. Throughout her writing career Murata has worked as a part-time convenience store clerk in Tokyo and draws much of her inspiration from her observations of everyday life in there. \nMurata received the Gunzo Prize for New Writers for her first novel\, Jyunyū (Breastfeeding) in 2003\, the Mishima Yukio Prize for Shiro-iro no machi no\, sono hone no taion no (Of Bones\, Of Body Heat\, of Whitening City) in 2013\, the Noma Literary New Face Prize for Gin-iro no Uta (Silver Song) in 2009\, and the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 2016 for Konbini ningen (Convenience Store Woman) which became her first book to be translated into English in 2018. \nJocelyne Allen is a Japanese translator\, interpreter\, and writer based out of Toronto\, Canada\, after a decade in Japan. During her time in the Land of the Rising Sun\, she worked as a magazine columnist\, interpreted for foreign correspondents\, and toured with a Japanese drum group. During her career as a professional translator of creative and pop culture works\, she has translated a large number of short stories\, novels\, and manga\, including the Eisner Award winning Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths. As an interpreter\, she has worked with many of Japan’s most celebrated manga artists and authors\, including Taiyo Matsumoto\, Aya Kanno\, and Hideo Furukawa. She is also the author of the novel You and the Pirates. \n\nMs. Murata will also be part of the Festival Pop-up at Union Station between 12:00pm and 2:00pm on Saturday\, October 27\, as well as participating in a panel at Harbourfront Centre on Saturday\, October 27 at 4:00pm. \nAfter her appearances in Toronto\, Ms. Murata will head to the United States for events in Iowa and New York. Her full North American schedule can be found here.
