SUMMARY:Always\, Sunset on Third Street Trilogy: 2nd Cycle
DESCRIPTION:ALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street Trilogy\n『三丁目の夕日』三部作全編ブルーレイ上映\nComplete trilogy of blu-ray screenings\nIn conjunction with Tokyo Before/After photography exhibition \nThe 1st screening cycle: May 3\, 7\, and 16 \nThe 2nd screening cycle: May 22\, 31\, and June 4 \n  \nScreenings at The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n2 Bloor St. E. Suite 300\, 3rd floor of Hudson’s Bay Centre\, above Royal Bank \nAdmission free \n  \nBased on manga by Ryōhei Saigan \nDirected by Takashi Yamazaki (Part 1: 2005\, Part 2: 2007\, Part 3: 2012) \nAll films are presented in Japanese with English subtitles. \nIn the photography exhibition TOKYO Before/After\, photographs from the 1930s and 1940s are contrasted with works after 2010. World War II with its destructive air raids marks the boundary between these two groups of photographs. Tokyo has gone through so many pivotal incidents in its urban history. The Meiji Restoration in 1868 followed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 transformed the city from Edo to Tokyo. Post-war recovery and reconstruction were celebrated with the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. Both the even higher fever of the Bubble economy and its sudden burst transformed the city again at the tail end of the 20th century. What will the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020 do to the city? We all wonder. \n  \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street was such a big hit film in 2005 that a sequel was produced immediately by popular demand. In 2012 Part 3 was added to complete a trilogy of films describing the downtown life of Tokyo in 1958\, 1959\, and 1964. Symbolically standing in the middle of the stories\, the Tokyo Tower\, first in construction\, and then in full function in the television industry\, is a strong unifying image. This heartwarming neighbourhood comedy reminds us that social and cultural changes ALWAYS involve living people who struggle and survive thorough those challenging times. Going through the drama of dealing with changes and progress\, the same individuals who witnessed the events of Before remain in the new world of After to testify about the past. But\, sometimes the memories and testimonies are funny and whimsical\, as are these films. \n  \nThe 2nd screening cycle \nTuesday\, May 22\, 2018  6:30 P.M. 133 min. \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street Part 1\, 1958 \nThursday\, May 31\, 2018  6:30 P.M\, 145 min. \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street Part 2\, 1959 \nMonday\, June 4\, 2018  6:30 P.M. 142 min. \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street Part 3\, 1964 \nFor the first screening cycle click here > \n

SUMMARY:PRIDE Films: Lily Festival
DESCRIPTION:Lily Festival 百合祭\n\n\nJune 26\, 2018 6:30 PM  &  July 16\, 2018 1:00 PM\n\n\nDirected by Sachi Hamano\nJapanese with English subtitles [2001] 100 min.\n\n\n  \nCelebrate Pride with us this summer by watching four films in the PRIDE FILM SERIES that look at LGBTQ diversity in Japan. \n  \nDelightful romantic complications are stirred up with the arrival of a 75-year-old Casanova\, Mr. Miyoshi\, at a senior citizens’ apartment building. Mrs. Miyano and her five other apartment mates\, who range in age from 69 to 91\, find their lives forever transformed by his flattery and sexual attentions. Dauntlessly they break out of their shells\, reclaiming their own desires. Lily Festival is a humorous and subversive erotic fantasy in which Mrs. Miyano\, having found her desire\, is now confronting the possibilities of lesbian love for the first time. Lily Festival portrays the lively reawakening of older women who have been shackled by both oppression of women and discrimination against the elderly. These women are definitely not cute old ladies. \nDirector Sachi Hamano has released over 300 low-budget adult films portraying sexuality from women’s perspectives. Funding for Lily Festival was provided in part by donations from more than 12\,000 women from all over Japan who support Hamano’s filmmaking. High production values\, great acting and an engaging story make Lily Festival such a delight. If you are looking for granny-on-granny action\, be patient\, this romantic comedy unfolds in the most lovely and unexpected ways. Lily Festival celebrates golden girls who are bold and overflowing with energy and who find that there is sex after 60. [Programme notes from Inside Out film festival] \nThe film was an adaptation of the novel Yurisai (Lily Festival) written by Hoko Momotani about elderly sexuality. \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto would like to acknowledge the generous support for this film screening from TANTANSHA Co.\, Ltd. and director Sachi Hamano.  Thank you very much! \nCAST\nKazuko Yoshiyuki\nMickey Curtis\nKazuko Shirakawa\nUtae Shoji\nChisako Hara \nProduction Company\nTantansha CO.\,LTD\n  \nOther films in the PRIDE FILM SERIES: \nTABOO                   Directed by Nagisa Oshima\nHUSH!                   Directed by Ryosuke Hashiguchi\nLILY FESTIVAL     Directed by Sachi Hamano\nKAKERA                Directed by Momoko Ando

SUMMARY:Tokyo Biyori Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Tokyo Biyori『東京日和』DVD screenings \nIn conjunction with the TOKYO: Before/After photography exhibition \nThe 1st screening: Friday\, June 29\, 6:30 P.M. \nThe 2nd screening: Thursday\, July 5\, 6:30 P.M. \nAt The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n2 Bloor Street East\, above the Royal Bank \n  \nAdmission free \nReservations required: 416.966.1600 x229 \n  \nBased on the book by Yōko and Nobuyoshi Araki \nDirected by Naoto Takenaka\, 1997 \nin Japanese with English subtitles\, 121 minutes \n  \nIn the photography exhibition TOKYO Before/After\, photographs from the 1930s and 1940s are contrasted with works after 2010. In the contemporary section of the exhibition\, two photographers\, Daidō Moriyama and Nobuyoshi Araki\, are featured as the leading giants of post-war photography in Japan. \nSentmental Journey in 1971 marked Nobuyoshi Araki’s first success in photographic publication\, which depicted his own honeymoon trip with his beloved Yōko. In 1990 Yōko passed away\, but she kept writing essays up to her death. These essays along with Araki’s photographic diary were published on the anniversary of her death in 1991 as Tokyo Biyori (Weather). \nIn the book Yōko and Araki walk around Tokyo in the fine weather and their affection and thoughts overlap the urban street scene images. Director/actor Naoto Takenaka read the entire book while standing in a bookstore\, and it caused him to weep deeply. On the spot Takenaka determined to make this book into a film. \nThe cityscape of Tokyo is one of the extra characters in the film. Even the apartment of the Arakis\, and its view from its terrace\, works as a profound background for this most romantic\, unique love relationship. \n
