SUMMARY:Ryusuke Hamaguchi: HAPPY HOUR Part 1
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Ryusuke Hamaguchi Retrospective: The Theatre of Emotions co-presented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and Cinema Moderne taking place in Montreal\, we will be featuring three special film screenings of his films in Toronto as well. Director will be in attendance for some of the screenings. Stay tuned for more details! \n\nHAPPY HOUR\nPart 1 of 3 (1hr 47 min)\nA powerful affirmation of the immersive potential of cinema. Happy Hour is a slow-burning epic chronicling the emotional journey of four thirtysomething women in the misty seaside city of Kobe. As they navigate the unsteady currents of their work\, domestic\, and romantic lives a sudden\, unexpected rift opens between that propels each to a new\, richer understanding of life and love. Filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s wise\, precisely observed\, compulsively watchable drama of friendship and midlife awakening runs over five hours\, yet the leisurely duration is not an indulgence but a strategy to create a novelistic space for everyday moments to become charged with possibility that yields a subtle emotional intensity rarely possible in a standard-length film. Happy Hour is far more than just an ordinary melodrama. It is a spectacularly complex and fiercely poetic rendering of the details of daily life in which ideas and feelings are swayed by the unseen forces of friendship and love and buffeted by the weight of deception\, loyalty and tradition. \nWinner of awards at major international festivals—including Locarno\, where stars Sachie Tanaka\, Hazuki Kikuchi\, Maiko Mihara and Rira Kawamura shared the Golden Leopard for Best Actress—Happy Hour has brought new attention to the work and career of one of Japan’s most talented young directors. SUMMARY:Ryusuke Hamaguchi: PASSION
\n\nPASSION\nDirected by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (115 min.) 2008 Japanese with English subtitles \nFollowing the film will be a MASTER CLASS with director Ryusuke Hamaguchi. \nFilmmakers\, cinema studies students and film fans are welcome!\nA young couple announces their engagement at a celebration with friends whose reactions\, however\, indicate that within the group lurk unspoken\, contradictory feelings concealing affairs of the distant past. While the women go home after the celebration\, the men carry on and end up at the flat of a mutual girlfriend. During that night and the following days\, tension between the participants rapidly comes to the surface and their mutual bonds fundamentally change. \nIn Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s delicately-conceived graduation film\, passion can suggest affection\, anger\, or suffering. The film treats the communication of extreme emotions as a variation on the cycle of violence from which there is seemingly no escape. \nRyusuke Hamaguchi – The Theatre of Emotions \n \n  \nCommunity Partner \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Memories of Origin: Hiroshi Sugimoto & KOCHUU
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of CONTACT Photography Festival\, we will be screening three documentaries\, featuring the beauty of photography\, architecture\, light and the creative minds behind them. On May 23\, we will explore this with the screening of two documentaries together\, Memories of Origin: Hiroshi Sugimoto\, followed by KOCHUU: Japanese Architecture/Influence and Origin. Then on June 4\, we will screen a serene portrait of an artist in A Room of Her Own: Rei Naito and Light. Two of the films\, Memories of Origin and A Room of Her Own were directed by Yuko Nakamura.    \n\nMemories of Origin: HIROSHI SUGIMOTO\nThis documentary follows 200 days in life of the contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. \nHiroshi Sugimoto is a leading presence in the world of modern art. He has taken the medium of photography and perceiving it as a form of conceptual art\,has extended the barriers of expression. He is the winner of many prestigious awards and his photographs are sold for millions of yen at overseas auctions.\nThe film shows the sites of the Architecture series shot in southern France\, the huge installation art 17th Biennale of Sydney\, his new work Mathematics at Provence\, his art studio in New York while working on Lighting Fields\, his recent direction and production of tradition Japanese performance art and so on. It thoroughly pursues the questions that Sugimoto’s works pose- \n“living in modern times\,what are these works trying to tell us?”\nMEMORIES OF ORIGIN: Hiroshi Sugimoto was first broadcast on Japan’s program WOWOW on December\, 2010. The Director’s Cut of this documentary was expanded from a TV program which was nominated for the International Emmy Award for Art in 2011. \nDirector: Yuko Nakamura\nYear: 2011\, Japan\, 44 minutes \nCast: Hiroshi Sugimoto (Photographer/Contemporary Artist)\, Tadao Ando (Architect)\, Lee U-Fan (Contemporary Artist)\, Mansai Nomura (Kyogen Actor)\, Akira Asada (Critic)\nMusic: Keiichiro Shibuya \nProduction: TV Man Union\, INC. / WOWOW\, INC.\nProducer: Yuko Nakamura / Hiroyuki Ohde / Hideyuki Furutani International Producer: Miyuki Fukuma \nWe will be screening director Yuko Nakamura’s other feature documentary A Room of Her Own: Rei Naito and Light on June 4\, 2019. RSVP here >  \n \n  \nKOCHUU: Japanese Architecture/Influence and Origin\nNakagin Capsule Tower \nKOCHUU is a visually stunning film about modern Japanese architecture\, its roots in the Japanese tradition\, and its impact on the Nordic building tradition. Winding its way through visions of the future and traditional concepts\, nature and concrete\, gardens and high-tech spaces\, the film explains how contemporary Japanese architects strive to unite the ways of modern man with the old philosophies in astounding constructions. \nKOCHUU\, which translates as “in the jar\,” refers to the Japanese tradition of constructing small\, enclosed physical spaces\, which create the impression of a separate universe. The film illustrates key components of traditional Japanese architecture\, such as reducing the distinction between outdoors and indoors\, disrupting the symmetrical\, building with wooden posts and beams rather than with walls\, modular construction techniques\, and its symbiotic relationship with water\, light and nature. \nThese concepts can be seen through remarkable views of the Imperial Katsura Palace\, the Todai-Ji Temple\, the Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum\, the Sony Tower\, numerous teahouses and gardens. \nDirector: Jesper Wachtmeister\nYear: 2006\, Japan\, 53 minutes

The film is a beautiful drama about an encounter between two lost and wounded souls. The two are brought together as Misako’s cinematic poetry helps to shine light through the film and slowly win the hearts of the two main characters. \nRadiance was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes. At Cannes\, it won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. \nOther critically acclaimed films directed by Naomi Kawase are;  Shara (2003)\, The Mourning Forest (Jury Grand Prix\, 2007)\, Hanezu (2011)\, Still the Water (2014) and Sweet Bean (Un Certain Regard 2015). \nTo learn about other films DIRECTED BY JAPANESE WOMEN click here > \n
