SUMMARY:Cinéma Japonais: Ugetsu Monogatari
DESCRIPTION:Cinéma JAPONAIS: Thursday Movies @Alliance Francaise \n  \n  \nCo-Presented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and the Alliance Francaise\, Toronto \n@ Alliance Francaise\, SPADINA THEATRE\, 24 Spadina Rd. \nFree admission\, no reservations required   \nUGETSU MONOGATARI 雨月物語\nJanuary 16\, 2020 @7:30 PM \nDirected by Kenji Mizoguchi 1953\, 97 min. Japanese with English subtitles \nUgetsu\, directed by master filmmaker Kenji Mizoguchi\, is a beautiful supernatural tale set in 16th century Kyoto and Shiga prefecture. The films screenwriters Matsutaro Kawaguchi and Yoshikata Yoda wove together two stories from Akinari Uede‘s best-known work\, Ugetsu Monogatari (Tales of Moonlight and Rain\, 1776) and French writer Guy de Maupassant‘s Decore! \, 1883. The two stories from Ugetsu Monogatari\, The House in the Thicket and The Lust of the White Serpent (Asaji ga Yado and Jasei no In) are part of a collection of supernatural tales\, which are largely taken from traditional Japanese and Chinese ghost stories. \nBy the time he made Ugetsu\, Kenji Mizoguchi was already an elder statesman of Japanese cinema\, fiercely revered by Akira Kurosawa and other directors of a younger generation. And with this exquisite ghost story\, a fatalistic wartime tragedy\, he created a touchstone of his art\, his long takes and sweeping camera guiding the viewer through a delirious narrative about two villagers whose pursuit of fame and fortune leads them far astray from their loyal wives. Moving between the terrestrial and the otherworldly\, Ugetsu reveals essential truths about the ravages of war\, the plight of women\, and the pride of men. \nThe film stars Machiko Kyō\, Mitsuko Mito\, Kinuyo Tanaka\, Masayuki Mori\, and Ei Ozawa. The film won the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival and was nominated an Academy Award for for best costume. \nEssay “Ugetsu on the other shore” by Phillip Lopate from the Criterion Collection \nMore info here > \nTrailer below >

SUMMARY:The Post-War Cinema of Ozu Yasujiro - THE FLAVOUR OF GREEN TEA OVER RICE
DESCRIPTION:Everyday Life in Japan: The Post-War Cinema of Ozu Yasujiro\nCo-presented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and The Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto \nInnis Town Hall\, University of Toronto 2 Sussex Ave\, Toronto\, ON M5S 1J5 \nAdmission free\, registration required\, films in Japanese with English subtitles \nNew 4K digital restoration\, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack \n  \n\n \nMarch 8\, 2020 3:00 PM \nThe Flavour of Green Tea over Rice お茶漬の味\nDirected by OZU Yasujiro\, 1952\, 116 min. \nOne of the ineffably lovely domestic sagas made by Yasujiro Ozu at the height of his mastery\, The Flavor of Green Tea over Rice is a sublimely piercing portrait of a marriage coming quietly undone. Secrets and deceptions strain the already tenuous relationship of a childless\, middle-aged couple\, as the wife’s city-bred sophistication bumps up against the husband’s small-town simplicity\, and a generational sea change—in the form of her headstrong\, modern niece—sweeps over their household. The director’s abiding concern with family dynamics receives one of its most spirited treatments\, with a wry\, tender humor and buoyant expansiveness that moves the action from the home into the baseball stadiums\, pachinko parlors\, and ramen shops of postwar Tokyo. \nRETURN TO LIST OF ALL FILMS IN THIS SERIES >  \n  \nCo-Presented by:

In 1959\, Yasujiro Ozu remade his 1934 silent classic A Story of Floating Weeds in color with the celebrated cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa (Rashomon\, Ugetsu). Setting his later version in a seaside location\, Ozu otherwise preserves the details of his elegantly simple plot wherein an aging actor returns to a small town with his troupe and reunites with his former lover and illegitimate son\, a scenario that enrages his current mistress and results in heartbreak for all. Together\, the films offer a unique glimpse into the evolution of one of cinema’s greatest directors. A Story of Floating Weeds reveals Ozu in the midst of developing his mode of expression; Floating Weeds reveals his distinct style at its pinnacle. In each\, the director captures the joy and sadness in everyday life.   RETURN TO LIST OF ALL FILMS IN THIS SERIES >    Co-Presented by:

However\, there is one essential component that is often missing at the tables of international Japanese eateries – SAKE. Sake\, often called Japanese rice wine\, is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice and has a wide range of variety. This special drink has a long\, deep history in Japanese culture\, but outside of Japan\, its still not well known and somewhat inaccessible\, which makes it very hard to enjoy sake if you’re trying it for the first time. \nFor the Love of Sake journeys from rice paddies in Japan to breweries around the globe as it chronicles three passionate exponents of the increasingly popular beverage: a British ex-pat who has become Japan’s first foreign master brewer\, an American journalist known as the ‘Sake Evangelist\,’ and a fifth-generation Japanese brewer determined to shake up the industry. Together\, their stories form a fascinating snapshot of how ancient traditions are adapting to the demands of a growing global market. \nFeaturing Kosuke Kuji\, Chizuru Doi\, John Gauntner\, Hiroshi Kuji \n  \n[ Film Festivals\, Awards ] \n2015 San Sebastian International Film Festival\, Culinary Cinema\n2015 Tokyo International Film Festival\, Panorama\n2015 Hawaii International Film Festival\, Eat.Drink.Film \n[About KONISHI Mirai\, director\, producer\, editor] \nMirai Konishi\, a journalist and filmmaker\, grew up in Japan and studied film at the University of Southern California (USC).
