SUMMARY:Memories of Origin: Hiroshi Sugimoto & KOCHUU
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of CONTACT Photography Festival\, we will be screening three documentaries\, featuring the beauty of photography\, architecture\, light and the creative minds behind them. On May 23\, we will explore this with the screening of two documentaries together\, Memories of Origin: Hiroshi Sugimoto\, followed by KOCHUU: Japanese Architecture/Influence and Origin. Then on June 4\, we will screen a serene portrait of an artist in A Room of Her Own: Rei Naito and Light. Two of the films\, Memories of Origin and A Room of Her Own were directed by Yuko Nakamura.    \n\nMemories of Origin: HIROSHI SUGIMOTO\nThis documentary follows 200 days in life of the contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. \nHiroshi Sugimoto is a leading presence in the world of modern art. He has taken the medium of photography and perceiving it as a form of conceptual art\,has extended the barriers of expression. He is the winner of many prestigious awards and his photographs are sold for millions of yen at overseas auctions.\nThe film shows the sites of the Architecture series shot in southern France\, the huge installation art 17th Biennale of Sydney\, his new work Mathematics at Provence\, his art studio in New York while working on Lighting Fields\, his recent direction and production of tradition Japanese performance art and so on. It thoroughly pursues the questions that Sugimoto’s works pose- \n“living in modern times\,what are these works trying to tell us?”\nMEMORIES OF ORIGIN: Hiroshi Sugimoto was first broadcast on Japan’s program WOWOW on December\, 2010. The Director’s Cut of this documentary was expanded from a TV program which was nominated for the International Emmy Award for Art in 2011. \nDirector: Yuko Nakamura\nYear: 2011\, Japan\, 44 minutes \nCast: Hiroshi Sugimoto (Photographer/Contemporary Artist)\, Tadao Ando (Architect)\, Lee U-Fan (Contemporary Artist)\, Mansai Nomura (Kyogen Actor)\, Akira Asada (Critic)\nMusic: Keiichiro Shibuya \nProduction: TV Man Union\, INC. / WOWOW\, INC.\nProducer: Yuko Nakamura / Hiroyuki Ohde / Hideyuki Furutani International Producer: Miyuki Fukuma \nWe will be screening director Yuko Nakamura’s other feature documentary A Room of Her Own: Rei Naito and Light on June 4\, 2019. RSVP here >  \n \n  \nKOCHUU: Japanese Architecture/Influence and Origin\nNakagin Capsule Tower \nKOCHUU is a visually stunning film about modern Japanese architecture\, its roots in the Japanese tradition\, and its impact on the Nordic building tradition. Winding its way through visions of the future and traditional concepts\, nature and concrete\, gardens and high-tech spaces\, the film explains how contemporary Japanese architects strive to unite the ways of modern man with the old philosophies in astounding constructions. \nKOCHUU\, which translates as “in the jar\,” refers to the Japanese tradition of constructing small\, enclosed physical spaces\, which create the impression of a separate universe. The film illustrates key components of traditional Japanese architecture\, such as reducing the distinction between outdoors and indoors\, disrupting the symmetrical\, building with wooden posts and beams rather than with walls\, modular construction techniques\, and its symbiotic relationship with water\, light and nature. \nThese concepts can be seen through remarkable views of the Imperial Katsura Palace\, the Todai-Ji Temple\, the Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum\, the Sony Tower\, numerous teahouses and gardens. \nDirector: Jesper Wachtmeister\nYear: 2006\, Japan\, 53 minutes

SUMMARY:A Room of Her Own: Rei Naito and Light
\nA Room of Her Own: Rei Naito and Light  \nArtist Rei Naito reminds us of the faint presence of things that are not visible unless we make the effort to see them. An artist shrouded in mystery\, Naito has up to now refused to be filmed on camera. After two years of exchanges with the artist\, this documentary attempts to get close to the essence of Naito’s art\, which expresses the lights of existence\, without pointing the camera at theartist herself. The story involves the dynamism of the pulsating space of the “Matrix” at the Teshima Art Museum\, water\, light\, and five women who are enticed by the world of Naito’s art. The Teshima Art Museum\, which integrates a construction by architect Ryue Nishizawa (co-founder of SANAA)\, the artwork “Matrix” by artist Rei Naito\, and the natural surroundings\, is located in the middle of the beautiful Teshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea. Special permission was granted to film the museum. The result is the birth of a new art documentary reminiscent of a deep prayer\, with many intangible and tangible things weaved into the story. \n“Highlighting the two-year communications between Naito\, an artist who has never revealed her creating processes to the outside world\, and director Yuko Nakamura\, this film shows the quest of five women\, all invariably enchanted by Naito’s art\, as they explore her artistic world based on the question of whether it is in itself a blessing to be alive.” —Aichi International Women’s Film Festival \nDirector: Yuko Nakamura\, 2015\, 87 minutes > Films official website \nCast: Rei Naito\, Ran Taniguchi\, Hina Yukawa\, Keiko Oyama\, Nobuko Numakura\, Kyoko Tanaka \nDirector of photography: Yasuyuki Sasaki/ Sound : Koh Yu Chang/ Editor : Yuko Nakamura\, Kei Ishikawa/ Music : Tara Jane O’neil\, Masakatsu Takagi/ Costume Design: Theater Products/ Assistant Director : Hayato Onishi/ Executive Producer : Hiromitsu Sugita/ Associate Producer: Tomoaki Sugimoto/ International Producer : Miyuki Fukuma/ Cooperation : Gallery Koyanagi\, Teshima Art Museum/ Presented by TV MAN UNION\, Inc. \n(c) TV MAN UNION / YOICHI NAGANO \nAbout Teshima Art Museum\n\nUniting the creative visions of artist Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa\, Teshima Art Museum stands on a hill on the island of Teshima overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. The museum\, which resembles a water droplet at the moment of landing\, is located in the corner of a rice terrace that was restored in collaboration with local residents.\nStructurally\, the building consists of a concrete shell\, devoid of pillars\, covering a space 40 by 60 meters and with a maximum height of 4.5 meters. Two oval openings in the shell allow wind\, sounds\, and light of the world outside into this organic space where nature and architecture intimately interconnect. In the interior space\, water continuously springs from the ground in a day long motion. This setting\, in which nature\, art and architecture come together with such limitless harmony\, conjures an infinite array of impressions with the passage of seasons and the flow of time. \nAbout artist REI NAITO  \nREI NAITO\, born 1961\, is a Japanese artist who was born in Hiroshima. She graduated from Musashino Art University in 1985. She presented her works at the 47th Venice Biennale (1997) in Italy. She also collaborated with architect Ryue Nishizawa (co-founder of SANAA) at the Teshima Art Museum on the island of Teshima\, in the Seto Inland Sea. \nNaito’s art is also showcased in The museum of für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main\, the Museum of Modern art in New York\, the Israel Museum\, and the national Museum of Art\, Osaka. \nAbout Director YUKO NAKAMURA \n\nYUKO NAKAMURA (Film director / TV director) Born in Tokyo in 1977. SUMMARY:IKIGAI FILMS: Cutie and the Boxer
DESCRIPTION:Cutie and the Boxer\nDirected by Zachary Heinzerling (2013) 81 minutes \nThe Academy Award nominated Cutie and the Boxer is a moving account of the chaotic and unconventional 40-year love affair and creative partnership between action painter Ushio Shinohara and his wife\, Noriko\, also an artist. Ushio\, who punches canvases with paint-laden gloves\, is famous in Japan and in Manhattan’s art circles\, yet wider recognition has eluded him. Noriko\, 21 years his junior\, put her artistic ambitions on hold to be a wife and mother — and an assistant to her demanding husband. Now\, Noriko’s acclaimed “Cutie” series of drawings\, depicting the relationship between the title character and a volatile figure named Bullie\, is turning their world upside down. Winner\, Directing Award: U.S. Documentary\, 2013 Sundance Film Festival. \n \nIkigai Film Series \nWhat keeps you going? How do you stay happy\, and live a long life? These are some universal questions that will be explored in this film series that looks into the concept of IKIGAI. In Japanese\, IKIGAI生き甲斐 essentially means “reason for being” or the thing that makes your life worthwhile\, and we will catch a glimpse of how IKIGAI plays a role in the lives of remarkable Japanese people in these four documentaries.

SUMMARY:IKIGAI FILMS: Kendo's Grueling Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Kendo’s Grueling Challenge: The 120 second Test of Spirit\n心で闘う120秒　剣道・日本最難関試験に挑む\nDirector Hiroshi Tanami (1997) 48 minutes \nProduced by NHK\, English language version produced by JAMCO & The Japan Foundation \nJapanese fencing\, kendo (the way of the sword)\, combines sport with art\, and entrance into the highest ranks is dependent upon passing a gruelling examination. Two professional kendo practitioners\, Kenichi Ishida and Kai Miyamoto\, walk us through the finer points of this martial art as several candidates compete during the one-day hachidan qualifying exam. \nRANKING SYSTEM IN KENDO \nUnlike Judo or Karate\, Kendo does not have any visible marks or colored belts to indicate your rank. The beginner grades are called Kyu and start from 10 Kyu to 1 Kyu. \nOnce you reach 1 Kyu level\, you are ready to take the first master’s grade\, which is called Dan (equal to black belt in other Japanese martial arts). In kendo there are eight Dan\, starting with first Dan and ending with eight. \nThe Kendo eighth Dan exam is notoriously difficult\, and famous for having the lowest success rate in Japan (less than 1%). The next most difficult test in Japan is the justice or bar exam with success rate of just over 3%. This is explored in this documentary.

Regular online ticket price is $29.50. \nNITABOH: The Founder of Tsugaru Shamisen\nAugust 7\, 2019\, 6:30 PM & August 8\, 2019\, 2:00 PM\n@JFT\, admission free\, RSVP below \nDirected by Akio Nishizawa (2004) 99 minutes\, Japanese with English subtitles \nThis feature is the animated biography of Nitaro Akimoto\, the blind musician who founded the Tsugaru style of playing the shamisen\, three-string guitar. The shamisen you hear in the film is performed by Hiromitsu Agatsuma of AGA-SHIO. It is an excellent chance to hear his playing\, which conveys a feeling close to the spirit of the original pioneer Nitaboh. \nSee Hiromitsu Agatsuma LIVE at the AGA-SHIO concert!  concert details here > \nMore About Hiromitsu Agatsuma’s techniques revealed on the screen; \nThe process to create an animation whose movements match the sound of the shamisen\, the key element of “NITABOH\,” was not easy\, either. The skilled shamisen player Hiromitsu Agatsuma covered Nitaro’s shamisen performance in the move. In contrast to traditional animations\, we tried to show the subtle movements of the plectrum and fingers pressed on the three strings. The music scenes from “NITABOH” were created to exactly match the shamisen music used in the movie. \nFirst we shot the real shamisen performance and recorded it on videotape. Watching the videotape\, we created the timesheets that comprised a considerable numbers of frames (24 frames per second). Based on the videotape and the timesheets\, the animators drew the animation – the movement of the shamisen and its player. At one point the plectrum hits the strings nine times in one second; in order to animate the scene\, we need to allocate quite a few animation cells to just one frame. An ordinary theatrical animation movie requires only one cell per two to three frames. Meanwhile\, every shamisen scene in “NITABOH” incorporated many cells per one frame. We all appreciate the painstaking effort of the production staff who kept close check-ups at each scene.

While walking the island\, Asuka sees a Kerama deer\, a natural treasure. As she listens to Takeshi’s father tell the story about the Kerama deer\, Asuka has flashbacks of harsh words of her co-workers and becomes depressed. Life on the island with Jo gradually changes Asuka’s outlook. \n \nTREASURE HUNT わたしの宝もの \nDirected by Takako Miyahira (2015) 20 min. \n“Wanna know a secret?” Lan\, the new\, quiet girl in class gives Mie and Hana an origami rabbit. The goat meets a young boy\, and becomes aware of its own fate… \n \nTHE PATH OF THE KUMIODORI うんじゅぬ花道 \nDirected by Chikako Yamashiro\, Atsushi Sunagawa (2013) 20 min. \nMuseum worker Takeshi Kamiya manages to find time every day to practice the traditional Ryukyu art of “Kumiodori” (traditional Okinawan musical theater) and shows the path of the artist as he works and performs on stage. \nHis son had experienced lonely days without his father who was almost never home between his time practicing and appearing on stage\, but eventually decides to join his busy father in aiming to be a performer of “Kumiodori”. That is when he meets “Marumun”\, the embodiment of traditional arts\, which dwells in the theatre. \nThe entire cast of this film consists of actual performers\, who relate the process of how Kumiodori is created\, as well as the meaning of the subtle theatrical motions and postures. \nFor Okinawa Film Series Program 2\, click here >\nGenerously Supported by: Okinawa Visitors Bureau and Okinawa Film Office \n \n  \nCommunity Partner: Toronto Kyuyokai \n \n  \n

But on his day of triumph\, Kumagai\, one of the commanding officers\, suffers in agony trying to fulfill his duty and devotion to his lord Yoshitsune. This play was originally written for the puppet theatre and\, through its formal structure\, achieves the passion and solemnity of classic drama. A powerful warrior is transformed from a statuesque figure to a pure victim of the inhumanity of war. This character development is depicted stylistically through the sung narration of Gidayū music. Three Living National Treasures—Kichiemon\, Tomijuro\, and Tojuro—create a splendid tableau of historical grandeur. \n\nDōjōji – A Lover’s Duet \n(a dance performance) \nKyokanoko Musume Ninin Dōjōji \n二人道成寺　京鹿子娘二人道成寺　きょうかのこ むすめににん どうじょうじ \n \nPremiered in 1753 \nDirected for Cinema Kabuki by Naoya Hasumi \nRecorded live at Kabuki-za Theatre\, Tokyo\, 2006 \n71 minutes \nSubtitled in English \nTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=GPDeY3nNmSM \nSynopsis and background: http://www.kabuki21.com/ninin_dojoji.php \n  \nTamasaburo\, one of Japan’s most renowned dancers\, and rising star Kikunosuke create elegant mirror images to underscore the beauty and eroticism of one soul divided by the sacred and the profane in Dōjōji – A Lover’s Duet.  Abandoning the sacred path has transformed a beautiful young woman into a serpent. Dancing at a dedication ceremony for a temple bell\, the woman/serpent rediscovers her higher self. \n\nAkoya \n(a historical epic with Gidayū music accompaniment) \nDannoura Kabuto Gunki \n壇浦兜軍記 だんのうら かぶと ぐんき \n \nPremiered in 1732 as a puppet theatre play \nWritten by Bunkōdō and Hasegawa Senshi \nRecorded live at Kabuki-za Theatre\, Tokyo\, 2015 \n93 minutes \nSubtitled in English \nTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=GPDeY3nNmSM \nSynopsis and background: http://www.kabuki21.com/akoya.php \n  \nDefeated Samurai commander Kagekiyo vanishes and is searched for by the victorious Genji clan. Courtesan Akoya\, Kagekiyo’s lover\, is arrested and interrogated to learn the hideout of Kagekiyo. The interrogator confronts Akoya with an emotionally\, sophisticatedly elevated way of torture to pull out the truth from this dedicated lover; instead of violence or pain\, three music instruments are used to hear the clarity in tones as a reflection of the honesty of her mind.
