SUMMARY:Ghost in the Shell 2: INNOCENCE

SUMMARY:Always\, Sunset on Third Street Trilogy: 1st Cycle
DESCRIPTION:ALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street Trilogy\n『三丁目の夕日』三部作全編ブルーレイ上映\nComplete trilogy of blu-ray screenings\nIn conjunction with Tokyo Before/After photography exhibition \nThe 1st screening cycle: May 3\, 7\, and 16 \nThe 2nd screening cycle: May 22\, 31\, and June 4 \n  \nScreenings at The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n2 Bloor St. E. Suite 300\, 3rd floor of Hudson’s Bay Centre\, above Royal Bank \nAdmission free \nBased on manga by Ryōhei Saigan \nDirected by Takashi Yamazaki (Part 1: 2005\, Part 2: 2007\, Part 3: 2012) \nAll films are presented in Japanese with English subtitles. \nIn the photography exhibition TOKYO Before/After\, photographs from the 1930s and 1940s are contrasted with works after 2010. World War II with its destructive air raids marks the boundary between these two groups of photographs. Tokyo has gone through so many pivotal incidents in its urban history. The Meiji Restoration in 1868 followed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 transformed the city from Edo to Tokyo. Post-war recovery and reconstruction were celebrated with the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. Both the even higher fever of the Bubble economy and its sudden burst transformed the city again at the tail end of the 20th century. What will the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020 do to the city? We all wonder. \n  \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street was such a big hit film in 2005 that a sequel was produced immediately by popular demand. In 2012 Part 3 was added to complete a trilogy of films describing the downtown life of Tokyo in 1958\, 1959\, and 1964. Symbolically standing in the middle of the stories\, the Tokyo Tower\, first in construction\, and then in full function in the television industry\, is a strong unifying image. This heartwarming neighbourhood comedy reminds us that social and cultural changes ALWAYS involve living people who struggle and survive thorough those challenging times. Going through the drama of dealing with changes and progress\, the same individuals who witnessed the events of Before remain in the new world of After to testify about the past. But\, sometimes the memories and testimonies are funny and whimsical\, as are these films. \nThe 1st screening cycle \nThursday\, May 3\, 2018  6:30 P.M. 133 min. \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street Part 1\, 1958 \nMonday\, May 7\, 2018  6:30 P.M\, 145 min. \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street Part 2\, 1959 \nWednesday\, May 16\, 2018  6:30 P.M. 142 min. \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street Part 3\, 1964 \nFor the second screening cycle click here >

SUMMARY:Fashion Films: UGETSU
DESCRIPTION:Fashion Films: UGETSU 雨月物語   \n@JFT\, free admission\, registration required. All films in Japanese w/English subtitles\n\n\n\nCelebrate spring with us by taking a glimpse of Japanese fashion spanning a thousand years in this film series.\nApril is also the month that international fashion icon Issey Miyake celebrates his 80th birthday on April 22!\n\n\n@ JFT\, free admission\, RSVP required.  For other films in the Fashion Films Series click here.   \n  \n \nUGETSU　雨月物語   \nTwo screenings: Thursday April 26\, 2018 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM \nDirected by Kenji Mizuguchi \nJapanese with English subtitles\, 1953\, 97 minutes  \n  \nUgetsu\, directed by master filmmaker Kenji Mizoguchi\, is a beautiful supernatural tale set in 16th century Kyoto and Shiga prefecture. The films screenwriters Matsutaro Kawaguchi and Yoshikata Yoda wove together two stories from Akinari Uede‘s best-known work\, Ugetsu Monogatari (Tales of Moonlight and Rain\, 1776) and French writer Guy de Maupassant‘s Decore! \, 1883. The two stories from Ugetsu Monogatari\, The House in the Thicket and The Lust of the White Serpent (Asaji ga Yado and Jasei no In) are part of a collection of supernatural tales\, which are largely taken from traditional Japanese and Chinese ghost stories. \nBy the time he made Ugetsu\, Kenji Mizoguchi was already an elder statesman of Japanese cinema\, fiercely revered by Akira Kurosawa and other directors of a younger generation. And with this exquisite ghost story\, a fatalistic wartime tragedy\, he created a touchstone of his art\, his long takes and sweeping camera guiding the viewer through a delirious narrative about two villagers whose pursuit of fame and fortune leads them far astray from their loyal wives. Moving between the terrestrial and the otherworldly\, Ugetsu reveals essential truths about the ravages of war\, the plight of women\, and the pride of men. \nThe film stars Machiko Kyō\, Mitsuko Mito\, Kinuyo Tanaka\, Masayuki Mori\, and Ei Ozawa. The film won the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival and was nominated an Academy Award for for best costume. \nEssay “Ugetsu on the other shore” by Phillip Lopate from the Criterion Collection \n

The location is in Iwaki-city\, Fukushima Prefecture\, where there was the biggest coal mine on the main island of Japan. In order to save the town\, which is ailing as a result of large-scale reductions at the coal mine\, a project is launched to build a Hawaiian-style paradise in this northern town. The film is based on a true story about the people who supported the construction of the leisure facility\, “Joban Hawaiian Center”.\nA high school girl\, Kimiko (Aoi Yu)\, lives with her brother and her mother who works at the coal mine. Kimiko applies for a post as a Hawaiian Dancer despite fierce opposition from her mother. A former star dancer\, Madoka (Matsuyuki Yasuko)\, is brought in from Tokyo as a dance teacher. She ridicules the coal mine and the unsophisticated girls at first\, however\, the girls’ single-minded devotion gradually rekindles her almost forgotten passion. The girls continue with their rigorous and intensive training despite the harsh realities each girl is faced with\, and the day of the opening finally arrives.\nDirected by Lee Sang-il of Scrap Heaven. The total film attendance exceeded 1 million people\, and the film won 10 awards from the Japan Academy Prize. \n  \nRelated: Documentary Fukushima Hula Girls \nThe 2006 hit movie Hula Girl dominated film awards in Japan with its depiction of the birth of Japan’s first resort park\, themed on Hawaii and hot springs. The film was based on Spa Resort Hawaiians in Fukushima Prefecture\, an area that suffered enormous damage in the Tohoku earthquake of March 2011. Fukushima Hula Girls takes a documentary approach in following the resort’s national hula dance tour\, undertaken as a revitalization effort while fending off negative rumors. Shows the dancers who place their hopes in dance\, narrated by Hula Girl actress Aoi Yu and directed by Masaki Kobayashi. More details here >

SUMMARY:A Page of Madness 狂った一頁
DESCRIPTION: \nThe Toronto Silent Film Festival \nA Page of Madness 狂った一頁\n1926 Japan\nDirector: Teinosuke Kinugasa\nYoshi Nakagawa\, Ayako Iijima\n \n\nTICKETS HERE > \n\nA Page of Madness is a visually stunning masterpiece.  It peels back its inner mysteries in both beautiful and disturbing ways.  Made without intertitles\, it is from the opening moment’s enigmatic impressions and scenes\, a moving cacophony of which we’re not quite sure how it all fits together. We see a beautiful dancer in an elaborate headpiece dancing on a stylized stage. As the camera backs away\, suddenly we are seeing her through bars\, like those of a prison. When the scene cuts to a girl in a ragged dress\, dancing feverishly in her cell as if compelled by an unseen force\, it becomes clear that she is an asylum inmate\, and the beautiful woman we first saw is her delusion.\n\nJust like in Cabinet of Dr. Caligari\, a film this is most often compared to\, a plot eventually emerges. The old janitor works at the asylum to be near his wife\, who is a patient there. When their daughter arrives with the news of her engagement\, the family’s story\, in the form of flashbacks\, begins to piece together. The janitor attempts to free his wife from the asylum\, but she seems unwilling to go—perhaps she knows it’s where she belongs\, although there are signs that she may be afraid of her husband\, who may be going mad himself.\nOften called an “experimental” film\, it can be interpreted in many different ways. The director himself\, in his autobiography\, said he decided to make it after seeing “the entourage of a certain noble gentleman\, “one whom “secret whisperings” identified as Yoshihito (later Emperor Taisho). This film could therefore be also construed as a political allegory. The best films are always open for debate and however you may wish to interpret this film\, it’s up to you.\n\nDirector Kinugasa went on to become a pillar of mainstream Japanese cinema (even bringing home the Palme d’Or from Cannes in 1954. His bizarre early masterpiece was thought lost for decades until the director himself uncovered a print in his storehouse.\n \nAccompaniment by William O’Meara\n\nGuest Speaker: Chris MaGee\n\nFilm Courtesy of: Flicker Alley\n\nTrailer here > \n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with:\n      \n\nCo-presented by:

SUMMARY:Directed by Japanese Women: DEAR DOCTOR
DESCRIPTION:Dear Doctor\nWednesday March 28nd\, 2018 6:30 PM\n \nDirected by Miwa Nishikawa\, 2009\n127 minutes\, Japanese with English subtitles\nThe third film from Miwa Nishikawa\, whose previous film Sway swept many domestic film awards and garnered attention at the Cannes film festival. A novel she herself wrote\, bated on the idea of this film\, was nominated for the Naoki Prize. This sincere\, humanistic drama takes a scalpel to the timely theme of rural medical treatment against a beautiful pastoral backdrop. Rakugo storyteller Tsurube Shofukutei\, who has branched out into acting in recent years\, gives a highly empathetic performance in his first lead role\, as a doctor beloved by the village residents he treats. A small mountain village. Its sole and beloved doctor Ino (Shofukutei) suddenly vanises. An investigation gets underway but nobody\, including medical intern Keisuke Soma (Eita) who had arrived in town two months prior\, has any idea of Ino’s true identity. Just before disappearing\, Dr. Ino had examined a widow named Kazuko (Kaoru Yachigusa). Upon learning of her terminal condition\, Kazuko beseeched Ino to lie about it\, but before long Ino’s own secret was exposed. \nTo learn about other films in the DIRECTED BY JAPANESE WOMEN series\, click here > \n

DESCRIPTION:LADIES OF BURLESQUE + THE JAPAN FOUNDATION PRESENTS:\n \nLADIES OF BURLESQUE PRESENTS – LADY SNOWBLOOD – TRAILER from Nathan Boone on Vimeo. \n\nLADY SNOWBLOOD 修羅雪姫\n\n\n\n\n1973 / 97 min. / 18A\nDIRECTOR: Toshiya Fujita\nCAST: Meiko Kaji\, Toshio Kurosawa\, Masaaki Daimon\n\n\n7:30 PM – Pre-show  \n8:00 PM – Film start\n\nPurchase Tickets here >\n\n  \nBlood will flow\, spurt\, and stain your beautiful kimono as Ladies of Burlesque and our amazing co-presenter Japan Foundation Toronto transport you to the Meiji period of 19th century Japan with LADY SNOWBLOOD—that film Quentin Tarantino paid homage to (read: egregiously ripped off) for his KILL BILL diptych. With a traditional kata sword demonstration from the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s Mu Mon Kai Iaido Club performed before the film\, this screening promises to mesmerize on screen and off. \nBadass babe Meiko Kaji is Yuki\, a trained assassin out to avenge the rape of her mother. Born in a prison and with her mother dying in childbirth\, Yuki is trained by a priest in the art of vengeance by way of impressive sword skills. Setting out to assassinate the three men who violated her mother (any one of them being her father) and murdered her mother’s husband\, Yuki hunts them down one-by-one\, utilizing her expert training. Amidst the red spotted-snow of Japan\, LADY SNOWBLOOD is a stunning work of film artistry. Even when hyperbolic bloodshed reigns\, it never loses its nuanced sophistication. \nKaji\, as Yuki—in a role adapted specially for her from Kazuo Koike’s popular manga—is astounding. Un-sexualized\, and completely in control\, her performance is legendary and set the gold standard for determined\, demagogue manslayers. A popular songstress in Japan\, she also sang several of the songs featured in the film\, including “Shura no Hana” (aka “Flowers of Carnage”)\, which Tarantino used to great effect in KILL BILL: VOL. ONE\, with its O-Ren Ishii/The Bride snowy showdown. Don’t miss your chance to see the original female assassin on the big screen! \nThis Ladies of Burlesque screening is co-presented by Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nLive blade Tameshigiri demonstration by senior members of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s Iaido Club\, Mu Mon Kai.

There is no sightseeing spot on the island and people come here to “twilight”. \n \n  \nTaeko stays at “Hamada”\, which is run by Yuji (Mitsuishi Ken) who carries on at his own speed almost to a fault. People of distinctive character seem to gather at “Hamada”\, including Sakura (Motai Masako)\, a mysterious woman who every year comes from somewhere in the early spring\, and a high school teacher\, Haruna (Ichikawa Mikako)\, who drops by every day. \n \n  \nThere is also this intriguing exercise\, Merci taiso\, which the residents on the island do as part of their daily routine but only during the spring. \n  \nTaeko is bewildered with the life on the island which is completely out the norm for her\, but as she spends more time\, she begins to blend in with the slow pace on the island. The film portrays the main character who is tired of urban life but begins to look at herself through interaction with people on her trip. \nFilms also directed by Naoko Ogigami include Close Knit\, Rent-A-Cat\, Toilet\, Kamome Diner\, Go Go Haiku Girl and Yoshino’s Barber. \n  \nTo learn about other films in the DIRECTED BY JAPANESE WOMEN series\, click here > \n

SUMMARY:Directed by Japanese Women: RADIANCE
DESCRIPTION:RADIANCE 光\nThursday March 8th\, 2018 6:30 PM\n \nDirected by Naomi Kawase\, 2017\n101 minutes\, Japanese with English subtitles\nMarch 8th is international women’s day and March is also Women’s history month\, and what better way to celebrate this than watching films made by Japanese women. Radiance is the first film to be featured in this series of four films by pre-eminent female filmmakers from Japan. \nRadiance is the stunning new film by director Naomi Kawase. The film is a beautiful drama about an encounter between two lost and wounded souls. Misako (Ayame Misaki) is able to capture the beauty of cinema through her words\, and shares this special gift by writing concise audio descriptions of films for the visually impaired. \nThe photographer Nakamori (Masatoshi Nagase) is going through a difficult point in life as he gradually loses his sight. The two are brought together as Misako’s cinematic poetry helps to shine light through the film and slowly win the hearts of the two main characters. \nRadiance was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes. At Cannes\, it won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. \nOther critically acclaimed films directed by Naomi Kawase are;  Shara (2003)\, The Mourning Forest (Jury Grand Prix\, 2007)\, Hanezu (2011)\, Still the Water (2014) and Sweet Bean (Un Certain Regard 2015). \nTo learn about other films in the DIRECTED BY JAPANESE WOMEN series\, click here >

SUMMARY:Hideo Gosha: Three Outlaw Samurai
DESCRIPTION:http://criterion-trailers.s3.amazonaws.com/THREE_OUTLAW_SAMURAI_TRAILER_x700.mp4\n  \nDirected by Hideo Gosha\, 1964\, 93 minutes \nBlack and White\, Japanese with English subtitles \nThis first feature by the legendary Hideo Gosha is among the most beloved chanbara (sword-fighting) films. An origin-story offshoot of a Japanese television phenomenon of the same name\, Three Outlaw Samurai is a classic in its own right. A wandering\, seen-it-all ronin (Tetsuro Tamba) becomes entangled in the dangerous business of two other samurai (Isamu Nagato and Mikijiro Hira)\, hired to execute a band of peasants who have kidnapped the daughter of a corrupt magistrate. With remarkable storytelling economy and thrilling action scenes\, this is an expertly mounted tale of revenge and loyalty. \n \nWith the opening of the most recent STAR WARS film\, THE LAST JEDI\, (December 2017) there has been discussion about how the story owes a lot to Samurai cinema. Some say that the very concept of Jedi was influenced by Samurai\, and the trilogy’s lightsaber fighting choreography took a lot from works of Japanese filmmakers in the 1950s and 1960s\, particularly Akira Kurosawa. \nQuartz writer Adam Eptein says that director-writer Rian Johnson is likely to continue the trend\, this time delving into Hideo Gosha’s first feature\, Three Outlaw Samurai. Gosha’s film might not be quite as well-known to Western audiences as some of Kurosawa’s films are\, but it’s still part of the Criterion Collection\, which we are screening tonight. \nWe will also be screening Yasujiro Ozu’s I WAS BORN\, BUT… on December 7. SUMMARY:Yasujiro Ozu: I WAS BORN\, BUT...
DESCRIPTION:I Was Born\, But… 大人の見る  繪本 生れてはみたけれど \nDirected by Yasujiro Ozu\, 1932 (90 minutes) \nSilent film with Japanese intertitles\, subtitled in English and musical score. \nIn celebration of the life of Japanese Cinema Master Yasujiro Ozu\, (born on December 12\, 1903 and died December 12\, 1963)\,we have a special screening of his film “I Was Born\, But…”. \nOne of Ozu’s most popular films\, I Was Born\, But . . . is a blithe portrait of the financial and psychological toils of one family\, as told from the rascally point of view of a couple of stubborn little boys. For two brothers\, the daily struggles of bullies and mean teachers is nothing next to the mortification they feel when they realize their good-natured father’s low-rung social status. Reworked decades later as Ozu’s Technicolor comedy Good Morning\, it’s a poignant evocation of the tumult of childhood\, as well as a showcase for Ozu’s expertly timed comedy editing. \nWe will also be screening Hideo Gosha’s THREE OUTLAW SAMURAI on December 11. SUMMARY:Bring Your Own Bento Lunchtime Films > Japanese Manners
DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Japanese Manners \nBring Your Own Bento Lunchtime Films\nNovember 22\, 12:00 PM (Doors Open)\, film starts 12:15 PM \n\nCost: Free \n\n NHK International\, Documentary in English (20 min. x 2)\nInside and Outside　\nIn Japanese society\, there is a social world of implicit shared understanding\, and an outer social world that lacks this element. For example\, a person who fails to blend in to a community will be treated as an outsider\, but once recognised as an insider\, very strong relational bonds are formed. This short film explains the basics about what to do when you move in to a new place and how to greet your new neighbours. \n\nJapanese Vagueness\nIn many conversational situations\, Japanese people have a tendency to accommodate others by not clearly stating their own opinions. They use modest expressions like “It’s a very poor thing\, but please accept this” when presenting a gift. This second short film shows the distinction between surface expressions and actual feelings in the workplace\, where directness is often avoided for the sake of relationships. \nDon’t forget to bring your lunch (bento)!

SUMMARY:Fall Films: A Tale of Samurai Cooking
DESCRIPTION:A Tale of Samurai Cooking 武士の献立\n\nBringing back this popular film for two screening days! ENJOY! \n@JFT\, Free Admission\, RSVP required \nMonday November 13\, 6:30 PM \nThursday November 23\, 6:30 PM \n \nDirected by Yûzô Asahara \n2013\, 122 minutes\, PG \nStarring Aya Ueto\, Kengo Kôra\, Kimiko Yo \nHistorical comedy/drama \nHaru has an excellent sense of taste and great talent as a chef\, but her “spirited character” was too much for her first husband\, who divorced her after only one year of marriage. When a famous samurai chef from Kaga observes Haru’s culinary abilities\, he has a brilliant idea. The Funaki family\, who have served the Lord of Kaga for generations\, are known as “kitchen samurai” for their innovative dishes. However\, the heir to the family business\, Yasunobu\, shows little aptitude for or interest in cuisine. In order to save the Funaki family name and their reputation as kitchen samurai\, Haru agrees to marry Yasunobu and teach him the art of cooking. But will he be a willing student of this independent and opinionated new sensei? \nKAGA CUISINE \nThis story was inspired by a real-life family in Kaga that survived countless historical upheavals with its cuisine. Kaga Cuisine is famous for wide variety of luxurious dishes served on colorful lacquer ware and Kutani porcelain\, ranging from ordinary home cooking to Chinese-influenced haute cuisine rivalling even that of Kyoto. \n© 2013 “A Tale of Samurai Cooking” Film Partners
