But on his day of triumph\, Kumagai\, one of the commanding officers\, suffers in agony trying to fulfill his duty and devotion to his lord Yoshitsune. This play was originally written for the puppet theatre and\, through its formal structure\, achieves the passion and solemnity of classic drama. A powerful warrior is transformed from a statuesque figure to a pure victim of the inhumanity of war. This character development is depicted stylistically through the sung narration of Gidayū music. Three Living National Treasures—Kichiemon\, Tomijuro\, and Tojuro—create a splendid tableau of historical grandeur. \n\nDōjōji – A Lover’s Duet \n(a dance performance) \nKyokanoko Musume Ninin Dōjōji \n二人道成寺　京鹿子娘二人道成寺　きょうかのこ むすめににん どうじょうじ \n \nPremiered in 1753 \nDirected for Cinema Kabuki by Naoya Hasumi \nRecorded live at Kabuki-za Theatre\, Tokyo\, 2006 \n71 minutes \nSubtitled in English \nTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=GPDeY3nNmSM \nSynopsis and background: http://www.kabuki21.com/ninin_dojoji.php \n  \nTamasaburo\, one of Japan’s most renowned dancers\, and rising star Kikunosuke create elegant mirror images to underscore the beauty and eroticism of one soul divided by the sacred and the profane in Dōjōji – A Lover’s Duet.  Abandoning the sacred path has transformed a beautiful young woman into a serpent. Dancing at a dedication ceremony for a temple bell\, the woman/serpent rediscovers her higher self. \n\nAkoya \n(a historical epic with Gidayū music accompaniment) \nDannoura Kabuto Gunki \n壇浦兜軍記 だんのうら かぶと ぐんき \n \nPremiered in 1732 as a puppet theatre play \nWritten by Bunkōdō and Hasegawa Senshi \nRecorded live at Kabuki-za Theatre\, Tokyo\, 2015 \n93 minutes \nSubtitled in English \nTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=GPDeY3nNmSM \nSynopsis and background: http://www.kabuki21.com/akoya.php \n  \nDefeated Samurai commander Kagekiyo vanishes and is searched for by the victorious Genji clan. Courtesan Akoya\, Kagekiyo’s lover\, is arrested and interrogated to learn the hideout of Kagekiyo. The interrogator confronts Akoya with an emotionally\, sophisticatedly elevated way of torture to pull out the truth from this dedicated lover; instead of violence or pain\, three music instruments are used to hear the clarity in tones as a reflection of the honesty of her mind. Actually playing three instruments onstage\, plus singing\, Tamasaburo realizes magnificently one of the most challenging Kabuki female roles. \n\nThree Thieves Named Kichisa \n(an urban outlaw story) \nSan’nin Kichisa \n三人吉三 \n \nPremiered in 1860 \nWritten by Kawatake Mokuami \nDirected for the stage and Cinema Kabuki by Kushida Kazuyoshi \nRecorded live at Theater Cocoon\, Shibuya\, Tokyo\, 2014 \n136 min. \nSubtitled in English \nTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=2&v=oBtmU5KSkmQ \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRmoN1_bGsg \nSynopsis and background: \nhttp://www.kabuki21.com/sannin_kichisa.php \n  \nEarly 19th-century Edo (the former name of Tokyo) had juvenile delinquents and outlaws everywhere. Urban culture was overripe. Three thieves happen to meet on a dark New Year’s night. They feel compassion for each other instantly and vow brotherhood. But they do not know that this encounter is only one milestone of their fate. Long before the three meet\, their lives have already been entangled. An intricate web of destiny eventually drives them to their deaths. Kankuro\, Shichinosuke\, and Matsuya are three of the most promising young Kabuki actors. This classic play is given new life by these young talents in an unconventional production by Kushida at a contemporary venue\, Theater Cocoon\, located in the Shibuya district of Tokyo\, known as the Street of Youth. \n  \nIn association with Consulate General of Japan in Toronto \nPresented by The Japan Foundation \nFor more information: 416.966.1600 ext.229 \nwww.jftor.org \n\nシネマ歌舞伎2019トロント \n2019年11月9日・10日 \nトロント上映十周年、3年ぶり8回目となるシネマ歌舞伎上映 \nHDハイ・デフィニションの大画面で観る歌舞伎 \n全作品英語字幕付 \n  \nTIFF Bellライトボックス \nTIFF Bell Lightbox \n350 King Street West\, Toronto \n日加修好90周年記念 \n入場料: 各上映$20＋税・手数料 \n前売り:　オンラインで販売中　tiff.net/specialevents \n当日売り:　上映館にて \n在トロント日本国総領事館、国際交流基金共催 \n問い合わせ: 416.966.1600 x.229 \n  \n【上映日程・上映作品】\n11月9日（土曜）午前11時30分　『熊谷陣屋』 \n『一谷嫩軍記』【いちのたに、ふたば、 ぐんき】時代物義太夫狂言（武家の戦の悲劇） \n英題Kumagai’s Camp \n2010年東京歌舞伎座でライヴ収録　104分　英語字幕 \n武将の戦いは心身の奥深くにまで及ぶ。

SUMMARY:SPIRIT OF JAPAN: SHINTO & GAGAKU
DESCRIPTION:SPIRIT OF JAPAN: SHINTO & GAGAKU\nJapanese Traditional Religion and Music\n(Introduction of Shinto and Gagaku performance) \nYou may think Japan is the country of Buddhism. In fact\, there are various Buddhist temples in Kyoto\, Nara and everywhere in Japan\, and the concept of “Zen” is also familiar. On the other hand\, quite many Japanese enjoy Christmas and Halloween\, and visit Shinto shrines from time to time. \nShinto is Japanese indigenous religion\, which does not have a founder\, dogmas and a holy scripture. However\, it has been kept as a part of Japanese life (custom) for more than a few thousand years\, and for example\, millions of people visit Meiji Jingu Shinto shrine in Tokyo for the New Year’s first shrine visit to make prayers. \n \nShinto priests of this Meiji Jingu will come to The Japan Foundation\, Toronto this September\, and have an introductory talk about Shinto\, the concept of the relation with nature as you can see the forest (picture) surrounding Meiji Jingu\, and the connection with the life of Japanese people. \nGagaku –traditional music- has an important role at Shinto ritual ceremonies. Slow and mellow music will lead you to feel Japanese culture rooted into the ancient times of the country. In this event\, some music will be performed by three musical instruments (Sho\, Hichiriki\, Ryuteki). Furthermore\, performers (Shinto priests) will give you instructions if you want to challenge/try to play it! \n  \nBio: \nMember: Moriyasu Ito\, Atsuki Katayama\, Takanaga Tsutsumi \nMoriyasu Ito graduated from Kyoto University and earned Bachelor of Law. He entered in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993 and studied at Trent University in Canada as a trainee\, and was posted to Karachi in Pakistan as a cultural attache and vice consul for three years. Back to Tokyo in 1999\, he left the ministry in 2003 and entered Meiji Jingu and became a Shinto priest after studying at Kokugakuin University. He is a Chief of the International relation division at Meiji Jingu Intercultural Research Institute. He plays the Sho (Japanese wind instrument assembling panpipes). \nAtsuki Katayama graduated from Kokugakuin University in 2003\, and entered Meiji Jingu in the same year. His father is serving at Hitomaro Jinja (Shinto shrine)\, dedicated to the spirit of a poetry Kakinomoto-no Hitomaro (A.D. 660-724)\, in Yamaguchi prefecture.  He became a Shinto priest in 2008 after serving as a trainee for 5 years at Meiji Jingu. Currently he belongs to the Ritual division. He plays Ryuteki (dragon flute). \nTakanaga Tsutsumi lives in the life close to Shinto\, since his mother was born in the family serving at Kumano-hongu Taisha (Shinto shrine) in Wakayama prefecture. After he studied low at Tokai University\, he decided to be a Shinto priest\, and entered Kokugakuin University to take one year intensive course for the qualification to be a priest. He has been serving at Meiji Jingu for three years as a trainee\, now. He plays the Hichiriki (small double-reed instrument).

SUMMARY:Rakugo—Japanese Traditional Storytelling Performance
DESCRIPTION:co-presented by the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto\nsubtitled in English\nGet ready to laugh this February! The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre will host a “Rakugo-kai” with veteran Rakugo star Yanagiya Sankyo. \nHe became an apprentice to Yanagiya Kosan V and received the high shin’uchi rank in 1981. A gifted performer\, he is famous for his ability to portray the subtlest emotions of a character during a performance. \nIn rakugo\, a lone storyteller in traditional garb sits on stage. Using only a paper fan (sensu) and a small cloth (tenugui) as props\, and without standing up from the seiza sitting position\, the rakugo artist depicts a long and complicated comical story. The story always involves the dialogue of two or more characters\, the difference between the characters depicted only through change in pitch\, tone\, and a slight turn of the head.  Absolutely fascinating and guaranteed to leave you laughing. \nTickets: (416) 441-2345
