SUMMARY:Continuing Learning Japanese 26: Japanese Language Courses in London
\n担当：\n国際交流基金トロント日本文化センター　齋藤典子\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org　　Web site: www.jftor.org \nCAJLE　小室リー郁子\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Web site: http://www.cajle.info/ \n  \nInformation Exchange Meeting for Japanese Language Teachers:\nContinuing Learning Japanese 26\nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Yet\, it appears that teachers do not know much about the other institutions\, courses or programmes. This lack of understanding can sometimes be found even within the same institution. We believe that it is very important and necessary for teachers to know what their current students have previously studied and in what type of environment that education took place. Similarly\, it is important to be informed of the available learning opportunities for students who wish to continue studying Japanese.  We believe it is essential for teachers to build a strong and active network that enables them to communicate with one another. Since December 2009\, the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nFor the 26th event of the series\, we will introduce various Japanese language courses in London. Please register using the form below. \nSpeakers:\n１．Forest City Japanese School (Rie Shirakawa)\n２．Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School (Akira Tanimoto)\n３．University of Western Ontario (Mitsume Fukui)\n４．Huron University College (Michiya Kawai\, Sawako Akai\, Rie Shirakawa) \nDate: Saturday\, October 14th\, 2017\nTime: 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm (The doors open at 2pm)\nPlace: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto   　2 Bloor Street East\, Suite 300\, Toronto\, Ontario \nFor Inquiries:\nNoriko Saito (The Japan Foundation\, Toronto)\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org　　Web site: www.jftor.org \nIkuko Komuro-Lee (CAJLE)\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Web site: http://www.cajle.info/

\n担当：\n国際交流基金トロント日本文化センター　齋藤典子\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org　　Web site: www.jftor.org \nCAJLE　小室リー郁子\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Web site: http://www.cajle.info/ \n  \nInformation Exchange Meeting for Japanese Language Teachers: Continuing Learning Japanese 25\nJapanese Language Education and Gender\nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. \nIn the 25th event of the series\, we would like to share ideas within the topic of “Japanese language education and gender;” namely\, how we are expected to respond in an educational environment where we are met with an increasing variety of students with different backgrounds and values. In the first part of the workshop\, Mr. Jotaro Arimori will introduce studies on the topic and talk about gender within the context of Japanese language education. After a lunch break\, we hope to think about the topic from different viewpoints as we discuss the important points to remember when dealing with classroom instruction and materials\, how to interact with our students\, etc. \nPlease join us! \nDate: Saturday\, July 22\, 2017\nTime: 10:00 pm to 2:30 pm (Doors open at 9:30 am)\nPart 1 – 10:00 am to 12:00 pm: Overview of studies on Japanese language education and gender\nLunch: Please bring your own lunch.\n              Part 2 – 12:45 pm to 2:30 pm: Discussion\nPlace: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto   2 Bloor Street East\, Suite 300\, Toronto\, Ontario\nLecturer: Mr. Jotaro Arimori (University of Toronto) \nRegistration (mandatory): Please register using the form below. \nFor Inquiries:\nNoriko Saito (The Japan Foundation\, Toronto)\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org　　Web site: www.jftor.org \nIkuko Komuro-Lee (CAJLE)\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Web site: http://www.cajle.info/

SUMMARY:2017 JFT Summer One-Day Workshop for Teachers of the Japanese-Language
DESCRIPTION:THE JAPAN FOUNDATION\, TORONTO\n2017 JFT SUMMER ONE-DAY WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS OF THE JAPANESE-LANGUAGE\nSession abstracts have now been added!\nDate: Friday\, July 7\, 2017\, 9:20 am – 5:30 pm (doors at 9:00 am) \nLocation: West Mall Centre 2220\, Simon Fraser University\, Burnaby Campus\, BC\nhttp://www.sfu.ca/fs/Campus-Facility-Profiles/Building_Information/West_Mall_Centre.html \nParticipants: Japanese language teachers\n*Those interested in Japanese language education are also welcome to attend. \nSchedule:\nDoors open:    9:00 am\nOpening:          9:20 am\nSession 1:         9:30 am – 12:30 pm\nLunch Break:  12:30 pm – 2:00 pm\nSession 2:        2:00 pm – 5: 30 pm \nSession 1: Updates for the new curriculum in BC\nLecturer: Ms. Stacia Johnson\, French Teacher\, Port Hardy Secondary School\nJapanese Rep\, BCATML\nSession abstract: \nBritish Columbia’s curriculum is now in the last stage of the revising process\, with drafts of the redesigned curriculum ready for optional use in classrooms for the 2017/18 school year. These revisions were not carried out individually for each subject\, but instead were included in a major reform where all areas of learning are being redesigned at the same time using a common framework. As such\, this is a huge topic that has aroused the interest of teachers from all levels of education. \nThat is why we are pleased to invite a member of the curriculum team\, Ms. Stacia Johnson (French Teacher at Port Hardy Secondary School\, Japanese Rep. of BCATML) to talk about the process of redesigning the Japanese (and other languages’) curriculum\, including a summary of the curriculum team meetings. Together with Ms. Johnson we will go over possible strategies and lessons\, as well as some hand-on activities. She will also share ideas on how we can bring the aboriginal content embedded in the new curriculum into our actual teaching. \nRegardless of the level of education you belong to\, we believe that it is valuable for all teachers to understand how elementary and secondary education is changing in BC. \nSession 2: The 3 Things to Teach Your Students about Autonomous Learning\nLecturer: Mr. Yoshifumi Murakami\, Japanese Language Education Advisor\nSession abstract: \nWith the diversity of students and the expanding variety of online resources\, the role of teachers is changing from “providers of information” to “supporters of learning”. If so\, how can teachers support learners’ autonomous learning? I believe there are 3 important elements for autonomous learning: “know about your learning style”\, “know about learning resources” and “connect with other Japanese language speakers”. In this workshop\, after a short introduction of what autonomous learning is\, participants will experience these 3 essential elements firsthand. Please bring your computer\, tablet or other device that is able to connect to the internet. \nLanguages: Japanese and English \nRegistration (mandatory): Please register using the form below.\n*Please note that registration is on a first come first serve basis. \nContact: Noriko Saito (416) 966-1600 ext.

\n担当：\n国際交流基金トロント日本文化センター　齋藤典子\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org　　Web site: www.jftor.org \nCAJLE　小室リー郁子\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Web site: http://www.cajle.info/ \n  \nInformation Exchange Meeting for Japanese Language Teachers:\nContinuing Learning Japanese 22\nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. \nIn the 22nd event of the series\, we will have a showing of a video of an adult Japanese class (level 2) at Toronto Japanese Language School. Through this recorded class observation\, we hope that participating teachers are able to have the chance to reflect on issues in their own teaching and to share good points from the video that we can use. After the explanations of the background of the class\, we are going to watch the video and then have a discussion between participants. Please join us! \n  \nDate: Saturday\, October 29\, 2016\nTime: 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm (Doors open at 2pm)\nPlace: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto   2 Bloor Street East\, Suite 300\, Toronto\, Ontario \nRegistration (mandatory): Please register using the form below. \nFor Inquiries:\nNoriko Saito (The Japan Foundation\, Toronto)\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org　　Web site: www.jftor.org \nIkuko Komuro-Lee (CAJLE)\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Web site: http://www.cajle.info/

\n日時：2016年3月20日（日）　午後1時30分～午後4時30分\n開場：午後1時00分\n会場：トロント大学 (St. George Campus) OISE 2296 (2階)\n252 Bloor Street West\, Toronto\, Ontario\n参加費：無料 \n講師：齊藤真美（国際交流基金派遣日本語上級専門家、アルバータ州教育省日本語教育アドバイザー） \n本研修に関するお問い合わせ先：齋藤典子　nsaito@jftor.org  416‐966‐1600 ext 224 \n\n  \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto (JFT)\nWorkshop for Japanese-Language Teachers\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto (JFT) will hold three workshops in fiscal 2015\, which aim to provide a place for teachers to learn together about teaching the Japanese language. The third workshop\, suitable for anyone who is interested in teaching Japanese\, will deal with classroom activities and will be run by Ms. Mami Saito\, Japanese-Language Education Advisor at Alberta Education. Please join us! \nFor registration\, please see below. \nTheme: Activities – “Is that really ok?”:\nThe role of the teacher in the classroom and the distance between teacher and learner\nIn this workshop\, we will focus on classroom activities which are often incorporated into day-to-day learning activities. We will reflect on the activities currently being performed\, and examine their content as a group. Many learners these days are people who were born or brought up during the age of digital / internet technology (so called “digital natives”) and can attain a wide range of knowledge outside the classroom. What kind of role can teachers play for such learners? In the context of dealing with this digital content\, let’s think together on the content and type of activities\, and how we can conduct activities so that they are carried out effectively. \nDate and Time: Sunday\, March 20\, 2016     1:30 pm – 4:30 pm\nDoors open at 1:00 pm\nLocation: OISE (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education) Room 2296 (Second Floor)\nUniversity of Toronto (St. George Campus)\, 252 Bloor Street West\, Toronto\, Ontario\nRegistration Fee: Free \nInstructor: Mami Saito\nJapanese-Language Education Advisor\, Alberta Education (sponsored by the Japan Foundation) \nFor inquiries: Noriko Saito  nsaito@jftor.org or 416-966-1600 ext. 224

\n担当：\n国際交流基金トロント日本文化センター　齋藤典子\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org            Web site: www.jftor.org\nCAJLE　小室リー郁子\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Website: www.cajle.info \n  \nInformation Exchange Meeting for Japanese Language Teachers: Continuing Learning Japanese 20\nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. As detailed below\, the second workshop in this series will be a session hosted by Hiromi Kijima\, the chief developer of the textbook Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture. \nAfter the workshop\, there will be a mixer that we hope many people will be able to attend. \nRegistration Deadline: Sunday November 22\, 2015. (Please understand catering cannot be guaranteed for applications received after this deadline) \nTheme: By the author! The whole of Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture!\nMarugoto: Japanese Language and Culture\, a textbook based on the JF Standard for Japanese Language Education\, is a fun resource for anyone wanting to learn about the Japanese language and culture and striving to become able to communicate in Japanese. Marugoto places importance on students accomplishing tasks given with “Can-do” statements\, contextualized learning through topics and situations\, intercultural understanding\, collaborative learning\, learner autonomy\, and the language acquisition process\, among others. These are all connected to the concept of “Japanese for mutual understanding” which was key to the development of the book. \nWeaving in the above concepts\, in this workshop\, the foundations\, characteristics\, and use of Marugoto will be explained. We believe that you will discover a different world of Japanese language education from that of textbooks that centre on sentence patterns. We look forward to everyone’s questions and opinions. \nWorkshop: 2:30pm – 5:50pm \nMixer: 6:00pm – 8:00pm (A light meal will be served) \nInstructor: Hiromi Kijima (The Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute\, Urawa) \nInstructor’s Introduction: Ms. Kijima is a full-time lecturer at the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute\, Urawa. SUMMARY:Teacher Workshop at UBC: "Project Work in Upper-Beginner Classes"
（Voices of Kakehashi in Multicultural Canada: Transcultural and Intercultural Experiences）が開催されます。 \n  \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto and the University of British Columbia are co-hosting a workshop for Japanese language teachers on the topic of on how to carry out and evaluate project work in an upper-beginner language class. \nTheme: Project Work in Upper-Beginner Classes\nWhen do you actually use the Japanese that you learn in the classroom? It’s often said when studying Japanese overseas\, even after beginners have acquired enough sentence patterns\, vocabulary\, etc. it’s difficult to find places to actually use the language. In the age of internet technology\, it is possible for students to use things like Skype and Social Networking Services (SNS) to try and “access” Japanese on their own. However\, from the viewpoint of the whole class\, how many of the students are actually “accessing Japanese” in that way? In this workshop\, we will consider opportunities to use Japanese within classroom activities\, focusing on project work in particular. In project work\, students can use Japanese as one “tool\,” both in and out of the classroom\, and working with other learners can bring their own ideas and opinions together. During the workshop\, participants are invited to share their own specific experiences with project work. We will also consider together the significance of project work and how to evaluate it\, etc. \nInstructor:  Mami Saito\, Japanese-Language Education Advisor\, Alberta Education (sponsored by the Japan Foundation) \nFor inquiries about this workshop: Noriko Saito nsaito@jftor.org or 416-966-1600 ext. 224 \nThat afternoon in the same location there will also be a symposium organized by the Voices of Kakehasi Committee (Voices of Kakehashi in Multicultural Canada: Transcultural and Intercultural Experiences). SUMMARY:Continuing Learning Japanese 18: Following-up on Teaching Materials
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \nContinuing Learning Japanese XVIII \nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (Ontario Chapter)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Since December 2009\, the Ontario Chapter (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nFor the 18th event of this series\, we will be following on from the topic of the 16th session. In groups of two to three we looked at the textbooks widely used in Toronto and the surrounding areas and examined things such as their composition\, contents\, order of contents\, and used this to build a frame to compare texts. This time we will take this further and look at differences in focal points\, differences in targeted students\, and use in class; then through discussion we will further our understanding of the resources and at the same time learn the know how required to look at these resources from different angles. The participants will present their findings at the end of the session and these may be posted online later. The textbooks which we will be looking at include GENKI\, Nakama\, Minna no Nihongo\, Mirai\, Japanese for Busy People\, and other textbooks in the Japan Foundation\, Toronto’s collection. \nNot only teachers but also those interested in Japanese language education are welcome. Please join us! \nDate: Saturday\, February 7\, 2015\nPlace: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto 2nd Floor\, 131 Bloor Street West\, Toronto\, Ontario\nTime: 2:30pm to 5:30pm (The doors open at 2:00pm) \nPlease scroll to the bottom for registration \nFor Inquiries: \nNoriko Saito (Program Officer\, Japan Foundation Toronto)\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org Web site: http://www.jftor.org\nIkuko Komuro-Lee (CAJLE Ontario Chapter)\nE-mail: cajle.ontario@gmail.com Web site: http://www.cajle.info/ \n  \n\n \n \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n日本語学習を継続させる18 \nカナダ日本語教育振興会（オンタリオ部会）\nジャパン・ファウンデーション・トロント \nトロント近郊ではさまざまな年齢とレベルの学習者を対象に日本語教育が行われていますが、実際に教えている教師たちはほかの教育機関で行われていること、時には同じプログラム内であっても、自分以外の先生がしていることをあまりよく知らないのが現状だと思います。

SUMMARY:Continuing Learning Japanese 16: Teaching Materials
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \nContinuing Learning Japanese XVI \nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (Ontario Chapter)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Since December 2009\, the Ontario Chapter (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nFor the 16th event of this series\, we will be focusing on teaching materials. Focusing on beginner level textbooks widely used in Toronto and its surrounding areas\, participants will divide into small groups of two to three people and look at things such as the differences in the order of contents and how they are delivered\, differences in focal points\, what level of students and approximate hours of study are appropriate for each text\, and perform research activities on classroom activities amongst others. The groups will then present their conclusions\, and these may even go onto the website. The textbooks which we will be looking at include GENKI\, Nakama\, Minna no Nihongo\, Mirai\, Japanese for Busy People\, and other textbooks in the Japan Foundation\, Toronto’s collection. \n  \nDate: Saturday\, October 25\, 2014\nPlace: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto 2nd Floor\, 131 Bloor Street West\, Toronto\, Ontario\nTime: 2:30pm to 5:30pm (The doors open at 2:00pm) \nPlease scroll to the bottom for registration \nFor Inquiries: \nNoriko Saito (Program Officer\, Japan Foundation Toronto)\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org Web site: http://www.jftor.org\nIkuko Komuro-Lee (CAJLE Ontario Chapter)\nE-mail: cajle.ontario@gmail.com Web site: http://www.cajle.info/ \n  \n\n \n \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n日本語学習を継続させる16 \nカナダ日本語教育振興会（オンタリオ部会）\nジャパン・ファウンデーション・トロント \nトロント近郊ではさまざまな年齢とレベルの学習者を対象に日本語教育が行われていますが、実際に教えている教師たちはほかの教育機関で行われていること、時には同じプログラム内であっても、自分以外の先生がしていることをあまりよく知らないのが現状だと思います。
