SUMMARY:Summer Tenugui Towels: Fireworks\, Fireflies\, and Yōkai Monsters
DESCRIPTION:夏の手拭い展：花火と蛍と妖怪と \nSummer must be the most active season for Tenugui towels. In order to survive through the extreme heat and humidity of summer in Japan\, all kinds of customs\, culture\, and rituals have been created and developed. Tenugui towels were one of the tools to cope with summer in a practical way. \nTenugui are towels made of bleached cotton\, approximately 34 cm wide and 90 cm in length. The word literally means “a hand wiping cloth.” In the 17th century\, when the production of cotton increased dramatically in Japan\, people benefitted from the rich supply of cotton cloth for use in their daily lives. Individual towels were used for a remarkable number of purposes not only for wiping and cleaning\, but also for wrapping and wearing\, and even as advertising tools. \nAt this point we can see Tenugui as the reflection of the culture and lifestyle\, too\, beyond merely practical tools. In this exhibition Ukiyo-e woodblock prints are on display which depict people using Tenugui towels. We also have pairings of Ukiyo-e prints and Tenugui towels both indicating everything special in Japanese summer. Fireworks\, boating\, fresh water bathing\, firefly catching ― summer heat could have been turned into enjoyment and something to be culturally appreciated. \nOne of the special summer tradition has been spooky stories of ghosts and Yōkai monsters. In the hot humid nights\, those stories are supposed to make spectators feel chilled. And those creatures are the most attractive subjects which appear on both Tenugui and Ukiyo-e prints. \nJoin us at The Japan Foundation\, Toronto in the celebration of magnificent summer! \n\nAdmission: FREE Advanced\, time-specific reservations are recommended. \nBook Your Visit Here \nHand-sanitization at the entry and wearing face-coverings on our premises are recommended. \nGallery Hours: Open on Tuesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays. DESCRIPTION:Thank you to all those who participated in JFT Book Club (Hybrid) – With Silent Reading Time – Share Your Favourite Books from JFT Library!\n\nPlease continue to check the JFT’s website and newsletters for future book club information. \nSharing some comments from our participants! \n“Genuinely enjoyed the event! I think everything was timed well enough for us to enjoy every bit. Especially enjoyed the discussion. Every participant brought a different book and shared such interesting and personal perspectives as well. People bounced of each others opinions and recommendations which made the whole discussion so lively. It was very engaging and I hope everyone had as much fun as I did! Thank you Risa-san\, Emi-san and all the library staff\, for creating such a wonderful space with a thriving community that will only continue to grow thanks to your efforts. Also\, thank you for continuing to keep the hybrid mode alive. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to participate in such wonderful event!”\n—Johan  \n“We can make it longer\, more time to chill.”\n—Peter  \n \nShare Your Favourite Book. Celebrate Our Library Collection. Cultivate Cultural Exchange. \nBefore our physical library concludes operations in conjunction with our office relocation\, join us for a special book club celebrating our library collection\, the memories it has inspired\, and the community that have grown around it. Whether you’re a long-time library patron or a first-time visitor\, everyone is welcome! No assigned reading or prior knowledge is required. You can attend in person at the library or join online from anywhere in the world. \nOn the day of the event\, we invite you to bring a favourite book from our physical or digital collection (in English\, Japanese\, or French) and briefly share why it is meaningful to you or a memory associated with it. Then\, enjoy a relaxing hour of silent reading together; you can either revisit your own pick or read a book recommended by another participant. We’ll wrap up with an informal discussion in English\, where you’re welcome to share your thoughts on what you read\, or simply listen to fellow participants. This is a friendly\, low-pressure space where curiosity is encouraged\, different viewpoints are celebrated\, and every level of participation is valued. \nAs one of the last opportunities to gather in our current physical library before its relocation\, we hope this special session helps you cultivate meaningful connections with readers from diverse backgrounds through books and (re-)discover Japanese literature\, manga\, nonfiction\, and culture through fresh perspectives. \nThis book club is part of our special event series\, Journey onto JFT’s Next Chapter\, celebrating our community\, expressing our sincere appreciation to everyone who has supported us\, reflecting on our history together\, and sharing our vision for the future as we embark on this new chapter. Participants are warmly encouraged to explore our full program and make the most of this opportunity to enjoy our current public spaces and programming together! \nRegister Here   \n  \nIf you have any questions or concerns\, please don’t hesitate to contact us in person\, by phone\, email\, or via our contact form. \nP.S. The final day to borrow physical materials from our library will be Saturday\, August 22\, and all borrowed items must be returned by Friday\, October 9. JF Canada Digital Library will remain available during and after the relocation. \n\nShow WHY JOIN JFT BOOK CLUB “WITH SILENT READING TIME”? \nWHY JOIN JFT BOOK CLUB “WITH SILENT READING TIME”?\nMany of us simply want more time to read but cannot squeeze the time in\, as we have too many distractions and interruptions in our daily lives to concentrate on reading. It’s a safe space where your thoughts and impressions are valued\, regardless of whether you choose to actively participate or quietly absorb the conversations around you. \nWe welcome both seasoned book club members and first-time participants to discover the joy of silent reading without the pressures of finishing an assigned book on time and/or participating in mandatory discussions. \n \n\nShow HOW DOES THE UPCOMING JFT BOOK CLUB WORK? \nHOW DOES THE UPCOMING JFT BOOK CLUB WORK?\n\nOnce you register for the event\, find a book to share based on the criteria listed in WHAT BOOK TO BRING? Behind this growing popularity and access to Japanese voices are literary translators\, whose work helps to shape how Japanese literature is read\, understood\, and enjoyed around the world. \nTo celebrate the vital yet often unrecognized work of translators who bring Japanese voices to the world\, three Canada-based translators of Japanese literature will gather onstage at the Japan Foundation. The conversation will be moderated by an editor of Japanese literature in translation\, and together they will reflect on the work of translation\, sharing insights into the creative process\, the opportunities and challenges facing translators today\, and the evolving landscape of Japanese literature in translation. The speakers will also discuss the dynamic role of the literary magazine MONKEY: New Writing from Japan*(formerly Monkey Business) in bridging languages\, cultures\, and literary traditions to bring Japanese literature to English readers. \n\nDetails Here *The event has passed. We will be making the video of this event available on our YouTube channel. Stay tuned!\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\nContemporary Japanese Cinema Spotlight\nJuly 8 – August 20\, 2026 \nAs 2026 marks a significant year for Japanese cinema on the global stage\, this summer we turn the spotlight to four of its most acclaimed contemporary voices. With new works by FUKADA Koji\, HAMAGUCHI Ryusuke\, KORE-EDA Hirokazu\, and KUROSAWA Kiyoshi selected for major sections at the Cannes Film Festival\, this series celebrates the creative force of Japan’s leading auteurs today. \nSpanning intimate drama\, psychological thriller\, and period piece\, the series brings together recent works that exemplify each director’s distinctive voice and thematic concerns. From nuanced explorations of human relationships to quietly unsettling reflections on society\, these films demonstrate the depth and diversity of contemporary Japanese filmmaking. \nJoin us this July and August for a curated selection of films that reflect the artistry of contemporary Japanese cinema! \n\nRegister Here\n \n \n\nJFT People’s Choice Award\n\n\nVoting closes: Monday\, July 27\, 12:00 pm EDT \nAs we prepare to bid farewell to our public space\, we’re inviting our community to help decide the final film to be screened at the Japan Foundation Toronto Event Hall. \n\n\nFor the final screening\, the audience will take the programmer’s seat through the JFT People’s Choice Award. SUMMARY:Tampopo (JFT People's Choice Award screening)
DESCRIPTION:Tampopo \nタンポポ \nWednesday\, September 2\, 6:30PM (ET) \nDoors open 6:00PM | Film Screening | In-Person | JFT Event Hall \nDirected by ITAMI Jūzō • 1985 • 115 minutes • Presented in Japanese with English subtitles • Trailer  \nA self-proclaimed “ramen Western\,” Tampopo is a playful and delicious satire on food\, desire\, and Japanese culture. The story follows truck driver Goro (YAMAZAKI Tsutomu) and his sidekick Gun (WATANABE Ken) as they help Tampopo (MIYAMOTO Nobuko)\, a widowed noodle shop owner\, perfect her ramen recipe and transform her small eatery into a local legend. Through a series of eccentric vignettes—from a gangster’s sensual food rituals to an etiquette lesson gone wrong—ITAMI Jūzō serves up a loving and absurd meditation on the art of eating and living. Both hilarious and heartfelt\, Tampopo celebrates the pursuit of perfection and the joy found in a simple bowl of ramen. \n©Janus Films \nContent Warning: This film contains brief scenes of animal violence. He appeared in foreign-language films such as 55 Days at Peking (1963) and Lord Jim (1965). In 1965\, he published a book called Diary of Boredom in Europe\, an essay collection of his thoughts and reflections on his time in Europe. In 1967\, when working with director ŌSHIMA Nagisa on the set of Sing a Song of Sex\, he met actress MIYAMOTO Nobuko; they got married in 1969 and Miyamoto would later star in all his films. Itami turned to filmmaking in the 1980s. His directorial debut\, The Funeral (1984)\, was a critical and commercial success in Japan and won many awards\, including Japanese Academy Awards for Best Picture\, Best Director\, and Best Screenplay. SUMMARY:I Love Sushi (The Japan Foundation Travelling Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:Established in 1972\, the Japan Foundation creates global opportunities to cultivate friendship and ties between Japan and the world through culture\, language\, and dialogue. The Foundation operates programs in the fields of arts and cultural exchange\, Japanese-language education overseas\, and Japanese studies and intellectual exchange. As a new cultural exchange program\, we are delighted to present a touring exhibition “I Love Sushi” that focuses on sushi\, the most popular Japanese cuisine around the world. \n\n\n\nIn 2013\, UNESCO inscribed washoku—Japanese cuisine—on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list\, and sushi is the archetypal example. Sushi is a refined and healthy food that looks good and tastes good\, and it has already become a familiar item on menus worldwide. From its roots in Southeast Asia or Southern China\, sushi reached Japan over a thousand years ago. Since then\, sushi has radically changed\, taking advantage of the abundance of natural resources found in and around the islands of Japan\, of the application of knowledge and ideas to sushi\, and of the never-ending Japanese drive to try good-tasting foods at the earliest opportunity. The type of sushi that first comes to mind for most people today is nigiri-zushi\, which emerged about two hundred years ago in Edo\, the city that we now know as Tokyo. \n\n\n\nSushi has now spread outside Japan’s borders\, and is enjoyed around the world. But although it has become a familiar food\, many people have only discovered a few of its attractions. This exhibition aims to provide an in-depth visual guide to the appeal of sushi. It includes the chance to learn about how Japan took in sushi in its original form\, how it modified sushi to suit the natural environment\, culture\, and lifestyles of individual areas. It also introduces today’s vibrant sushi culture\, and it encourages us to think about the potential of sushi as a food for the future in the light of contemporary food issues. The exhibition includes a simulation of a visit to a sushi shop in Japan. People who know little about sushi will greatly enjoy the exhibition\, and keen fans of sushi will find it fascinating too. And we very much hope that through sushi\, the exhibition will also communicate something about the history and customs of Japan. \n\n\n\nFinally\, we would like to express our gratitude to Hibino Terutoshi for his supervision of the preparations for this exhibition\, and to all the other individuals and entities whose unstinting efforts have made the exhibition a success.
