DESCRIPTION:A Sense of Movement: Japanese Sports Posters\nSports Poster Exhibition\nApril 20—September 9\, 2023\n \nA Sense of Movement: Japanese Sports Posters\, co-presented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion\, is an exhibition that explores the connection between Japanese graphic design and sports. \nPrior to Toronto\, the in-person presentations in Sydney (October 2021 – January 2022) and in Paris (December 2022 – March 2023) featured a selection of 31 posters by eight Japanese graphic designers. This exhibition then arrived in Toronto with an extended range of exhibits\, a total of 68 pieces by 24 designers from young professionals who are currently active in the field to great masters who led the dawn of graphic design. The exhibition introduces the means by which these uniquely creative minds convey sport and its “sense of movement” through two-dimensional printed media. \nThis exhibition was planned and inspired by an online lecture by Eishi KITAZAWA\, curator at Ginza Graphic Gallery’s “Conjuring a Sense of Movement: Japanese Graphic Designers & Sports Posters” organized by The Japan Foundation\, London in September 2020. The exhibition was born online and has been growing in-person world-wide. \nHere in this extended selection the compositional beauty\, dynamism and humour expressed within these Japanese posters are communicated through the perspective of sports. This Japanese skier and daredevil became the first person to ever ski on the treacherous slopes of the highest mountain in the world\, descending nearly 4200 feet. While becoming famous in Japan for his achievement\, it wasn’t until Canadian filmmaker F.R. Crawley released this documentary that he received widespread international attention. \nShowing all of the dangers and thrilling moments of his journey up and down the mountain\, this tense film won the Oscar for Best Documentary and became a formative work in the sports documentary genre. \nTo make this event extra special\, we are opening our gallery for special early preview of our new exhibition\, A Sense of Movement: Japanese Sports Posters\, one day ahead of our public opening on April 20. Then\, Satoshi gradually finds himself drawn to Kozue (Ninon)\, a mysterious transfer student who won’t leave his side. Kozue and her mother start living in the guesthouse of Satoshi’s family inn and soon Kozue confides in Satoshi an unbelievable secret: She came from another planet! \nIn a sunny tale of youth\, director TSURUOKA Keiko recounts the alien sensation of first love from the perspective of a boy who doesn’t want to become a man. Instead\, he ponders the big questions of mortality. \n   \n \n \nDirector Biography: \nBorn in 1988\, TSURUOKA Keiko (鶴岡慧子) began making movies while attending Rikkyo University. Her graduation work\, the short film The Town of Whales won the Grand Prize at the 2012 Pia Film Festival (PFF)\, and was shown at the 63rd Berlinale International Film Festival\, the 17th Busan International Film Festival\, and many other film festivals around the world. In 2012\, she began studying directing at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media. The second film she directed there\, the feature film My First Love (2013)\, was nominated for the Dragons & Tigers Award for Young Cinema at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Lingering Memories (2015; a PFF scholarship work) was her first theatrical release. \n© Shingo Wakagi \nOriginal Author Biography: \nNISHI Kanako (西加奈子) was born in Tehran\, Iran\, where her family had relocated for her father’s job. She subsequently lived in Japan for several years before moving with her family to Cairo\, Egypt\, where she spent four of her elementary school years. The male protagonist’s early life in her novel Saraba! (So Long!) roughly parallels her own. At 25 she began writing fiction\, and made her literary debut in 2004 with the short story collection Aoi (Blue). In 2006 she won the Oda Sakunosuke Prize for her novel Tsūtenkaku (Tower to Heaven)\, and in 2012 she received the Kawai Hayao Prize for the novel Fukuwarai (Funny Face). Her monumental 2014 novel Saraba!\, in which the action roves across all of the places where she has lived\, from Iran to Egypt and Osaka to Tokyo\, garnered her the prestigious Naoki Prize. Nishi’s forthright portrayals of the alienation experienced by characters with strong personalities have gained her a wide following\, especially among young readers. She subsequently lived in Japan for several years before moving with her family to Cairo\, Egypt\, where she spent four of her elementary school years. The male protagonist’s early life in her novel Saraba! (So Long!) roughly parallels her own. At 25 she began writing fiction\, and made her literary debut in 2004 with the short story collection Aoi (Blue). In 2006 she won the Oda Sakunosuke Prize for her novel Tsūtenkaku (Tower to Heaven)\, and in 2012 she received the Kawai Hayao Prize for the novel Fukuwarai (Funny Face). Her monumental 2014 novel Saraba!\, in which the action roves across all of the places where she has lived\, from Iran to Egypt and Osaka to Tokyo\, garnered her the prestigious Naoki Prize. Nishi’s forthright portrayals of the alienation experienced by characters with strong personalities have gained her a wide following\, especially among young readers. When Norio learns that Sasuke used to be a hopeful potter derailed by an antique authenticator\, the two decide to make the gamble of a lifetime against the authenticator they both have a score to settle with. DESCRIPTION:As academic institutions continue to embrace online and hybrid teaching models and we work to create and integrate digital tools into our pedagogy\, keeping up with the technological landscape can be a challenge. This talk will introduce open-access teaching tools through the lens of Japan Studies\, highlighting a variety of platforms\, databases\, and activities that\, while created by or linked to scholarship related to Japan\, can be used by any educator to enhance research and learning in the classroom. \nThis event is online only.\n\nDr. Paula R. Curtis is a historian of medieval Japan. She is presently the Yanai Initiative Postdoctoral Fellow and a Lecturer with the Department of Asian Languages & Cultures at UCLA. Her current book project focuses on metal caster organizations from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries and their relationships with elite institutions. In addition\, Dr. Curtis engages in several online projects\, including the Digital Humanities Japan initiative; an online database for digital resources related to East Asia; data analysis on employment opportunities in East Asia Studies; and the blog What can I do with a B.A. in Japanese Studies.

Enjoy serendipitous discovery from a curated selection of novels\, manga\, DVD/BR\, and more books about Japan or by Japanese authors! \n\nWhat is Fukubukuro (福袋)?\nFukubukuro (福袋\, “lucky bag”) is a Japanese New Year custom where people buy a mysterious sealed bags that are sold for a set price during the New Year period. Many shops\, businesses and department stores take part in this tradition and the sales begin on the first business day of the New Year. They typically contain products centred around a specific theme. Usually\, the bags are sold at a substantial discount and much less expensive than if you were to buy each item in the bag separately. The Fukubukuro is a very popular\, thrilling and highly anticipated event and people often even line up for hours to get the bags. \nThe term “fuku” (福) means “good fortune” or “luck”\, and “fukuro” (袋) – conjugated into “bukuro” – means “bag”. \n*The items in the JFT Library version of Fukubukuro are not for sales\, and must be returned to the Library by the due date. \n\nHow to participate in the Fukubukuro event\n*Please note the Fukubukuro event ends when the bags run out or on Tuesday\, January 31st\, 2023 at 4:30 pm (whichever is faster). \n1. Get or renew JFT Library Card \n・You need to have a valid JFT Library card to receive a Fukubukuro bag.\n・To apply for a new library card or renew your expired card\, please fill in our Library Card Application Form online and show your photo ID along with proof of address at the Library counter. Please note the library card is valid for one year and need to be renewed with valid ID. \n2. Grab a Fukubukuro bag and check it out at the Library Counter\n・Visit the JFT Library during the Library’s opening hours in January and grab a bag from the Fukubukuro table. *One bag maximum per library cardholder\n・Each bag contains 3 to 4 items. Please note those items will be counted toward the maximum number of items that can be checked out from the Library\, which is 15 total items (a 5-item limit for periodicals and audiovisual materials). \n3.
