DESCRIPTION:『ヒロシマ・アピールズ・グローバル・メッセージ』 ポスター展 \nSpecial thanks to\nJapan Graphic Design Association Inc.\nThe DNP Foundation for Culture Promotion\nJapan Design Committee \nIn commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, the entire annual series of the Hiroshima Appeals poster project is exhibited.  \nInitiated by JAGDA Hiroshima and Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation\, and currently also operated by The Hiroshima Peace Creation Fund\, the series demonstrates remarkably sustained continuity and ongoing efforts of world-wide compassion ( https://hiroshima.jagda.or.jp/appeals_about.html ). \nThe series consists of 29 posters\, headed by KAMEKURA Yūsaku’s masterpiece “Burning Butterflies” 1983\, continued with an unbroken sequence of works of high artistic excellence. \nSelected works from The Japan Foundation\, Toronto’s poster collection accompany the Hiroshima Appeals posters which share the unique nature of the design creation in being non-commercial\, abstract\, conceptual\, and focusing on global issues and subjects. \n\nAdmission: FREE \nAdvanced\, time-specific reservations are recommended. \nBook your visit here \nHand-sanitization at the entry and wearing face-coverings on our premises are recommended. \nGallery Hours: Open on Tuesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays. Ring in 2026 with our program inspired by Japan’s beloved New Year tradition “Fukubukuro” (福袋)\, or lucky bag! \nStarting Tuesday\, January 6th\, 2026\, JFT Library Card holders can grab a FukuBookLoan lucky bag\, containing a secret selection of books and/or audiovisual materials to borrow from the Library. Enjoy serendipitous discovery from a curated selection of novels\, manga\, DVD/BR\, and more books about Japan or by Japanese authors! You might discover your new favourite authors\, amazing film titles\, and intriguing topics that you never knew existed! \n\nShow What is Fukubukuro (福袋)?  \nWhat is Fukubukuro (福袋)?\nFukubukuro (福袋\, “lucky bag”) is a Japanese New Year custom where people buy mysterious sealed bags that are sold for a set price during the New Year period. Many shops\, businesses and department stores take part in this tradition and the sales begin on the first business day of the New Year. They typically contain products centred around a specific theme. Usually\, the bags are sold at a substantial discount and much less expensive than if you were to buy each item in the bag separately. The Fukubukuro is a very popular\, thrilling and highly anticipated event and people often even line up for hours to get the bags. \nThe term “fuku” (福) means “good fortune” or “luck”\, and “fukuro” (袋) – conjugated into “bukuro” – means “bag”. \n*The items in the JFT Library’s FukuBookLoan bags are for borrowing only\, and not for sales or giveaways. You must check them out at the library counter and return them to the Library by the due date. \n \n\nHow to participate in the FukuBookLoan event\n*Please note the FukuBookLoan event ends when all bags are gone or on Saturday\, January 31st\, 2026 at 4:30 pm (whichever is faster). \n1. Get or renew JFT Library Card \n・You need to have a valid JFT Library card (free of charge) to receive a FukuBookLoan lucky bag.\n・To apply for a new library card or renew your expired card\, please fill in our Library Card Application Form online and show your photo ID along with proof of address at the Library counter. Please note the library card is valid for one year and needs to be renewed with a valid ID. \n2. Select a theme tag and pick up a FukuBookLoan bag with the corresponding theme at the Library Counter\n・Visit the JFT Library during the Library’s opening hours in January\n・Pick up a bag theme tag from the FukuBookLoan rack. *One bag maximum per library cardholder\n・Bring the tag to the library counter. Staff will grab a bag from the storage and proceed with the checkouts.\n・Each bag contains 3 to 4 items. Please note those items will be counted toward the maximum number of items that can be checked out from the Library\, which is 15 total items (a 5-item limit for periodicals and audiovisual materials). \n3. Enjoy serendipitous discovery from a curated selection of novels\, manga\, DVD/BR\, and more books about Japan or by Japanese authors! You might discover your new favourite authors\, amazing film titles\, and intriguing topics that you never knew existed! \n\nShow What is Fukubukuro (福袋)?  \nWhat is Fukubukuro (福袋)?\nFukubukuro (福袋\, “lucky bag”) is a Japanese New Year custom where people buy mysterious sealed bags that are sold for a set price during the New Year period. Many shops\, businesses and department stores take part in this tradition and the sales begin on the first business day of the New Year. They typically contain products centred around a specific theme. Usually\, the bags are sold at a substantial discount and much less expensive than if you were to buy each item in the bag separately. The Fukubukuro is a very popular\, thrilling and highly anticipated event and people often even line up for hours to get the bags. \nThe term “fuku” (福) means “good fortune” or “luck”\, and “fukuro” (袋) – conjugated into “bukuro” – means “bag”. \n*The items in the JFT Library’s FukuBookLoan bags are for borrowing only\, and not for sales or giveaways. You must check them out at the library counter and return them to the Library by the due date. \n  \n\nHow to participate in the FukuBookLoan event\n*Please note the FukuBookLoan event ends when all bags are gone or on Saturday\, January 31st\, 2026 at 4:30 pm (whichever is faster). \n1. You might discover your new favourite authors\, amazing film titles\, and intriguing topics that you never knew existed! \n\nShow What is Fukubukuro (福袋)?  \nWhat is Fukubukuro (福袋)?\nFukubukuro (福袋\, “lucky bag”) is a Japanese New Year custom where people buy mysterious sealed bags that are sold for a set price during the New Year period. Many shops\, businesses and department stores take part in this tradition and the sales begin on the first business day of the New Year. They typically contain products centred around a specific theme. Usually\, the bags are sold at a substantial discount and much less expensive than if you were to buy each item in the bag separately. The Fukubukuro is a very popular\, thrilling and highly anticipated event and people often even line up for hours to get the bags. \nThe term “fuku” (福) means “good fortune” or “luck”\, and “fukuro” (袋) – conjugated into “bukuro” – means “bag”. \n*The items in the JFT Library’s FukuBookLoan bags are for borrowing only\, and not for sales or giveaways. You must check them out at the library counter and return them to the Library by the due date. \n  \n\nHow to participate in the FukuBookLoan event\n*Please note the FukuBookLoan event ends when all bags are gone or on Saturday\, January 31st\, 2026 at 4:30 pm (whichever is faster). \n1. Iyi’s clansmen\, believing the desperate ronin is merely angling for a new position\, try to force his hand and get him to eviscerate himself—but they have underestimated his beliefs and his personal brand of honor. Winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize\, Harakiri is a fierce evocation of individual agency in the face of a corrupt and hypocritical system. \n©Janus Films \n  \nWidely regarded as one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema\, NAKADAI Tatsuya collaborated extensively with many of Japan’s best-known and acclaimed directors. In his over seven decade career\, he appeared in more than 160 films. According to him\, Harakiri was his favourite film of them all. Thank you for your understanding. \n\n Director Profile: \nKOBAYASHI Masaki (小林 正樹\, 1916-1996) was a Japanese filmmaker who was “one of the finest depicters of Japanese society in the 1950s and 1960s.” Kobayashi started his film career as an assistant at the Shochiku studio\, working under KINOSHITA Keisuke (木下 惠介)\, who was an acclaimed director domestically during the period. While working as an assistant\, Kobayashi grew to admire Kinoshita’s skills in directing. The two collaborated on a few projects and Kinoshita helped Kobayashi make some of his earliest films. \nIn 1957\, Kobayashi made Black River\, about the crime and prostitution that arose around US bases in Japan during and after the American occupation. This was the first of Kobayashi’s films to star NAKADAI Tatsuya in a major role. Nakadai would become a mainstay of Kobayashi’s film\, starring in 9 of Kobayashi’s next 13 films. Starting from 1959\, Kobayashi rose to the peak of his career\, with the trilogy of epic war dramas The Human Condition (1959-1961) starring Nakadai as a pacifist gradually disillusioned as he goes through various hardships and cruelty during the war. Labelled as “one of the most staggering achievements of Japanese cinema\,” the total length of the films is almost ten hours\, which makes it one of the longest fiction films ever made for theatrical release. \nIn 1962\, Kobayashi directed Harakiri\, which won the Jury Prize at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival. The same year\, he also directed The Inheritance\, which won the BAFTA United Nations award. In 1964\, Kobayashi made Kwaidan\, his first color film\, a collection of four ghost stories drawn from books by Lafcadio Hearn. Kwaidan won the Special Jury Prize at the 1965 Cannes Film Festival\, and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

Ring in 2026 with our program inspired by Japan’s beloved New Year tradition “Fukubukuro” (福袋)\, or lucky bag! \nStarting Tuesday\, January 6th\, 2026\, JFT Library Card holders can grab a FukuBookLoan lucky bag\, containing a secret selection of books and/or audiovisual materials to borrow from the Library. Enjoy serendipitous discovery from a curated selection of novels\, manga\, DVD/BR\, and more books about Japan or by Japanese authors! You might discover your new favourite authors\, amazing film titles\, and intriguing topics that you never knew existed! \n\nShow What is Fukubukuro (福袋)?  \nWhat is Fukubukuro (福袋)?\nFukubukuro (福袋\, “lucky bag”) is a Japanese New Year custom where people buy mysterious sealed bags that are sold for a set price during the New Year period. Many shops\, businesses and department stores take part in this tradition and the sales begin on the first business day of the New Year. They typically contain products centred around a specific theme. Usually\, the bags are sold at a substantial discount and much less expensive than if you were to buy each item in the bag separately. The Fukubukuro is a very popular\, thrilling and highly anticipated event and people often even line up for hours to get the bags. \nThe term “fuku” (福) means “good fortune” or “luck”\, and “fukuro” (袋) – conjugated into “bukuro” – means “bag”. \n*The items in the JFT Library’s FukuBookLoan bags are for borrowing only\, and not for sales or giveaways. You must check them out at the library counter and return them to the Library by the due date. \n  \n\nHow to participate in the FukuBookLoan event\n*Please note the FukuBookLoan event ends when all bags are gone or on Saturday\, January 31st\, 2026 at 4:30 pm (whichever is faster). \n1. Get or renew JFT Library Card \n・You need to have a valid JFT Library card (free of charge) to receive a FukuBookLoan lucky bag.\n・To apply for a new library card or renew your expired card\, please fill in our Library Card Application Form online and show your photo ID along with proof of address at the Library counter. Please note the library card is valid for one year and needs to be renewed with a valid ID. \n2. Select a theme tag and pick up a FukuBookLoan bag with the corresponding theme at the Library Counter\n・Visit the JFT Library during the Library’s opening hours in January\n・Pick up a bag theme tag from the FukuBookLoan rack. *One bag maximum per library cardholder\n・Bring the tag to the library counter. Staff will grab a bag from the storage and proceed with the checkouts.\n・Each bag contains 3 to 4 items. Please note those items will be counted toward the maximum number of items that can be checked out from the Library\, which is 15 total items (a 5-item limit for periodicals and audiovisual materials). \n3.
