Viewer discretion is advised. \nIt’s just another suburban town until two events gradually begin to change everything. First\, a rash of graffiti appears\, featuring a local girl\, Azumi Haruko\, in a series of spray-painted “Missing Girl” posters plastered on the town’s walls. The second\, more sinister event is the rise of a gang of vicious high school girls carrying out random attacks on men. The local press covers the story\, the graffiti goes viral on the internet\, and the entire affair becomes one of the hottest topics on Twitter. Upon closer examination\, a connection emerges: it seems the girl gang may have been inspired by the “Haruko is Missing” posters\, taking revenge on men as part of their mission. \nThis pop-art and surrealist tale delves into the daily lives of Japanese women across various age groups: teenage high school girls\, young women in their 20s just beginning their careers\, and working women in their 30s\, often labeled by societal norms as being “past their peak.” \nThis screening is a part of our annual winter film showcase\, KOTATSU 2025: Japanese Cinema at Innis Town Hall. \nFree admission. Register below. \n\nDirector Profile: \n \nA Fukuoka native\, MATSUI Daigo was born in 1985. He runs the theatre company GOJIGEN\, where he writes\, directs and acts in all of the company’s productions. In 2009\, he made his debut as the youngest screenwriter in NHK with Twin Spica. His feature directorial debut was Afro Tanaka starring MATSUDA Shota in 2012. It was followed by How Selfish I Am! and Wonderful World End; the latter premiered in the Berlin International Film Festival. He was awarded the New Director’s Award in TAMA Movie Awards for Our Huff and Puff Journey. He also directs music videos and writes columns. Japanese Girls Never Die gave him the opportunity to direct the short film a flower in a vase based on ISHIAZKI Huwie’s song\, which won the Best Short Award in the Music Video Competition at the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia.\n \n\nCommunity Partners: \n \n \n

He began his career as a filmmaker when he was still in high school. He first received critical acclaim in 2014 for his music video GRADUATION PARTY!!!!!\, which premiered at the Kyoto International Film Festival. From 2017\, he focused on cinematography which led him to being nominated for various film festivals. In 2018\, Director Okuyama’s short film\, Tokyo 21st October\, was selected for Shorts Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2018 and other renowned film festivals such as Busan International Film Festival. In the same year\, he directed his first feature film\, Jesus\, which won Kutxabank-New Directors Award at 66th San Sebastian Film Festival. She is unable to see other people sexually. \nOn the other hand\, for Kasumi\, who lives with her family in a provincial town by the sea and is now 30 years old\, marriage is a topic that always comes up. Her mother is always talking about marriage. Her younger sister is already married and pregnant. Now she feels drawn towards the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there\, Umi and Sora. They were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does. Ruka’s dad and the other adults who work at the aquarium are only distantly aware of what the children are experiencing as they get caught up in the mystery of the worldwide disappearance of the oceans’ fish. \nDirected by WATANABE Ayumu (Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko) and scored by longtime Studio Ghibli composer Joe HISAISHI (My Neighbor Totoro\, Spirited Away\, How’s Moving Castle)\, Children of the Sea is adapted from the manga of the same name by author and manga artist IGARASHI Daisuke\, which won the Excellence Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival. \nThis is a family-friendly screening and is a part of our annual winter film showcase\, KOTATSU 2025: Japanese Cinema at Innis Town Hall. \nFree admission. Register below. \n\nDirector Profile: \n \nBorn in 1966\, WATANABE Ayumu joined Studio Mates in 1986 and debuted his first original picture with the same studio. Watanabe directed the short theatrical release Obachan no Omoide (2000)\, and the feature film Doraemon: Nobita’s Dragon 2006 (2006) and became a free agent in 2011. After that time\, he tirelessly built up his directing portfolio with projects such as the TV series Mysterious Girlfriend X (2012)\, Danchi Tomoo (2012-15)\, If Her Flag Breaks (2014)\, Space Brothers (2012-14)\, and Ace Attorney (2016). Three TV series directed by Watanabe aired in 2018\, including After the Rain\, Gurazeni\, and Major 2nd. Children of the Sea is his fourth time directing a full-length theatrical release. \n\nAuthor Profile: \n \nBorn in 1969\, IGARASHI Daisuke made his debut in 1993 when he received the Shiki Award from Gekkan Afternoon (Kodansha). He is known for Witches\, which won the Japan Media Arts Festival Manga Category Award\, and SARU (Shogakukan)\, which he created in collaboration with novelist ISAKA Kotaro. His series Little Forest (Kodansha)\, which ran from 2002 to 2005\, was made into a live-action films in Japan and Korea. He received his MA in History of Art from Columbia University\, New York. \n\n\nWhat is The Ishibashi Foundation / The Japan Foundation Curatorial Exchange Program? \nThe Japan Foundation invites curators and professionals of contemporary arts with the aim of deepening understanding of Japanese contemporary arts overseas and facilitating the formation of networks among institutions and people involved in contemporary arts in the participating countries. \nThis program is implemented by the Japan Foundation with generous funding from the Ishibashi Foundation. \nThis year\, 2024\, we invited 15 curators and professionals in the contemporary arts from the Americas (Canada and Brazil) and Europe (Germany\, Italy and Switzerland) for 11 days. You might discover your new favourite authors\, amazing film titles\, and intriguing topics that you never knew existed! \n\nWhat is Fukubukuro (福袋)?\nFukubukuro (福袋\, “lucky bag”) is a Japanese New Year custom where people buy mysterious sealed bags that are sold for a set price during the New Year period. Many shops\, businesses and department stores take part in this tradition and the sales begin on the first business day of the New Year. They typically contain products centred around a specific theme. Usually\, the bags are sold at a substantial discount and much less expensive than if you were to buy each item in the bag separately. The Fukubukuro is a very popular\, thrilling and highly anticipated event and people often even line up for hours to get the bags. \nThe term “fuku” (福) means “good fortune” or “luck”\, and “fukuro” (袋) – conjugated into “bukuro” – means “bag”. \n*The items in the JFT Library’s FukuBookLoan bags are for borrowing only\, and not for sales or giveaways. You must check them out at the library counter and return them to the Library by the due date. \n\nHow to participate in the FukuBookLoan event\n*Please note the FukuBookLoan event ends when all bags are gone or on Friday\, January 31st\, 2025 at 4:30 pm (whichever is faster). \n1. He is known for his detailed animation effects intricately shown in the chopper attack scene in Patlabor 2: The Movie\, and his highly realistic character animation in the opening credits of Cowboy Bebop: The Movie and several Production I.G features. DESCRIPTION:Transformation from Historical Flat Images to Contemporary 3-Dimensional Figures by Kaiyōdō\nNetsuke: Miniature sculpted figures / Toggles to hang personal items on an obi sash.\nYōkai: Monsters\, spirits\, deities\, demons\, goblins\, ghosts\, imaginative animals\, and all manner of mysterious occurrences. \nIn 2001\, the images from Hyakkiyagyō (Demon Horde’s Night Parade) pictorial book series\, published from 1776 to 1784\, were transformed to the Yōkai Netskue resin figures by Kaiyōdō Co. Ltd. which came to the public in boxes of sweets. DESCRIPTION:Author of the global bestselling series Before the Coffee Gets Cold\, KAWAGUCHI Toshikazu is embarking on a North American tour this fall\, starting with the annual Toronto International Festival of Authors. Mr. Kawaguchi’s stories of a time-traveling café originated as a play which was later published as a novel. It has since become a series\, been translated to over 30 languages and sold over 5 million copies around the world\, gaining popularity with diverse audiences. The playwright-turned-author is especially known for capturing his audience with heartwarming stories and a splash of nostalgia. \nOn September 26\, Mr. Kawaguchi will converse with Mr. Bruce Pitkin at the Japan Foundation\, Toronto about his unique journey of being a playwright turned novelist. The pair will discuss theatre\, writing\, and translation\, making it suitable for enthusiasts of all three to join in. Venturing into the challenges and opportunities the writer has faced in his journey\, audience can expect to learn more about the author’s storytelling\, which spans genres\, as well as hear all about how the café that lets you visit your past came into being. \n  \n*Registrants are encouraged to arrive on time when doors open at 5:30 PM. We will have an in-person waiting line before the event\, where we will release any empty seats\, on a first-come first-served basis.  \n*Following the talk event\, there will be a book-signing session with KAWAGUCHI Toshikazu at the JFT Library until 9 pm. The signing session is exclusively available to registered participants; you must already be onsite for the event prior to the signing session. With a career spanning leadership roles at Theatre Ontario and Art Starts\, Bruce has directed award-winning productions and adapted classical works\, demonstrating his deep understanding of theatrical techniques. His international experience includes studying the Tadashi Suzuki Method of Actor Training in Japan with Mr. Suzuki’s SCOT company\, giving him a unique perspective on Japanese theatre. DESCRIPTION:おはなしの世界を旅しよう\n日本語の美しさやリズムを、ストーリーテリング、遊び歌などを通してゆっくり味わってください。そして、ほぐれた心と身体で、作家の村中李衣さんと絵本作家の石川えりこさんが語る絵本の世界を会場のみなさんで旅してみましょう。会場での90分が物語と共に自在に伸び縮みする、絵本の魅力をたっぷりお楽しみください。 \n当日は、ストーリーテリングや絵本の朗読等の活動を親子で一緒にご体験いただきます。活動の合間に先生方から活動の意義や絵本に込めた思いについてもお話しいただく予定です。 \n日時：2024年9月21日（土）14：00→15：30\n会場：国際交流基金トロント日本文化センター　セミナールーム\n対象：日本語のお話しを聞きたい子どもたち（お話しを聴ける年齢の人ならだれでも）\n※ご参加には保護者の方の同伴が必要です。また、人数制限があることから事前のお申込みが必要です。１回のお申込み人数は保護者の方を含めて最大５名となります。\n※※授乳室やおむつ交換台は施設内にございません。\n定員：70名（同伴の保護者も含まれます。定員となり次第、締め切らせていただきます。）\nお申し込み：ご興味のある方は本ページ下段よりお申し込みください。 \nスケジュール：\n13：30: 開場\n14：00→15：30 おはなし会 \n\nストーリーテリング\n絵本の朗読（「こくん」他）\n遊び歌と遊び歌体操\n質問タイム\n\n15：30:　終了 \nプロフィール： \n石川 えりこ（いしかわえりこ） \n福岡県生まれ。 デザイナーを経て、 フリーのイラストレーター・絵本作家となる。 幼少期の体験をもとに描いた『ボタ山であそんだころ』（福音館書店）は 2015年に第46回講談社出版文化賞絵本賞及び 2017年に台湾でOpenbook最佳童書を受賞。 同作品は2015年にブラティスラヴァ絵本原画展へ出展。 \n作絵では、『あひる』（くもん出版）、『流木のいえ』（小学館）『しぶがき　ほしがき　あまいかき』（福音館／令和元年度社会保障審議会福祉文化財推薦作品特別他受賞）、『てんきのいい日はつくしとり』（福音館）、『かんけり』（アリス館）、『庭にくるとり』（ポプラ社）、『ほんやねこ』（講談社　2024年ブラティスラヴァ絵本原画展へ出展）、『カイト』（講談社）他多数。 \n挿絵では、『またおこられてん』（文　小西貴士／童心社）、『わたしはふね』（文　曹文軒／小学館）、『チョコレートひとつ』（文　余 麗瓊／传世活字国际文化传媒／第9回中国童書榜賞など多数受賞）他多数。 \n村中 李衣（むらなかりえ） \n1958 年山口県生まれ。児童文学作家、ノートルダム清心女子大学教授を経て、山口学芸大学客員教授。大学院修了後、慶應大学医学部病院管理学教室にて読書療法の研究に着手。活動の場所は小児病棟、老人保健施設、児童養護施設、刑務所等幅広い。2017 年、西隆太朗との共著「長期入院児のための絵本の読みあい：支援プログラムの実際とこれから」で絵本学会第 1 回日本絵本研究賞受賞。 \n主な作品は、『小さいベッド』（絵　かみやしん／偕成社／第32回サンケイ児童出版文化賞）、『おねいちゃん』（絵　中村悦子／理論社／野間児童文芸賞）、『チャーシューの月』（絵　佐藤真紀子／小峰書店／第53回日本児童文学者協会賞）、『ねむろんろん』（絵　こしだミカ／新日本出版社／第27回絵本日本賞最終候補）、『女性受刑者とわが子をつなぐ絵本の読みあい』（かもがわ出版）他多数 \n石川えりこと村中李衣による共著作品\n『あららのはたけ』（偕成社　第35回坪田譲治賞）\n『こくん』（童心社／2021年IBBYバリアフリー部門選定図書）\n『はだしであるく』（あすなろ書房／JBBYによる2025年IBBYバリアフリー部門推薦図書）\n『奉還町ラプソディ』（BL出版／2024年 JBBYおすすめ！日本のこどもの本）\n『「子どもの本」の創作講座～おはなしの家を建てよう』（金子書房）

DESCRIPTION:Breaking Barriers: The Power of Children’s Books\nA Talk With Picture Book Authors Rie Muranaka and Eriko Ishikawa\n \nIf you are interested in Japanese\, picture books\, childhood education\, or even psychology\, you do not want to miss this talk! \nWednesday September 18  | 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm EDT | In Person @ North York Central Library (Toronto Public Library)\, Room 1 | Japanese + English Interpretation \nRegistration Deadline: Sunday September 15\, 2024 \nJoin author Rie Muranaka (村中李衣) and illustrator Eriko Ishikawa (石川えりこ) as they introduce the concept of “barrier-free” picture books through their award winning book “Kokun” (Nodding). Chosen as Outstanding for the IBBY Collection for Young People with Disabilities\, this story explores a girl with a disability asserting her independence but also learning to accept help when it’s needed. Based on their work in Japan\, the authors will describe how they have used picture books to spark discussion about visible and invisible barriers and in therapeutic settings. \nThe talk will be in Japanese with an English translator. Children’s literature author and visiting professor at Yamaguchi Gakugei University. \nShe conducted research on reading therapy at Keio University\, looking at the possibility of communication through picture books with children in pediatric wards. Since then\, she has been creating and reading picture books with people from 0 to 100 years old in various places such as children’s hospital wards\, nursing homes\, geriatric health care facilities\, and prisons. She received the 1st Japan Picture Book Research Award. \nMajor works include award-winning ”おねいちゃん” (My Older Sister)\, and “女性受刑者とわが子をつなぐ絵本の読みあい” (Picture Book Reading Connecting Female Inmates and Their Children). \n  \nEriko Ishikawa 石川えりこ \nBorn in Fukuoka Prefecture. After working as a designer\, became an illustrator and picture book author. \nShe is one of the initiators of The Chikyu Passport (Earth Passport) project\, where picture book writers from different countries convey through their artwork their wish for children of the Earth to freely spread their wings. \nMajor works include “ほんやねこ” (The Bookstore Cat)\, “カイトWherever the Wind Blows” (Kite – Wherever the Wind Blows)\, “ボタ山であそんだころ” (When We Played on “Bota” Mountain)\, and “しぶがき　ほしがき　あまいかき” (Bitter Persimmon\, Dried Persimmon\, Sweet Persimmon)\, which won numerous accolades and awards internationally. \n  \nAbout “Kokun” \nTheir book “こくん” Kokun (Nodding) (Story by Rie Muranaka\, Art by Eriko Ishikawa. Published by Doshinsha) received the JBBY (Japanese Board on Books for Young People) Award\, Barrier Free Books Division\, and was selected for IBBY’s (International Board on Books for Young People) Selection of Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities. \nIntroduction (translated from publisher’s website): When I came to my beloved Tsubasa Nursery after being discharged from the hospital\, Shun came running to me. When he saw the walker\, he said\, “I’ll help you\,” but I told him firmly\, “I don’t need it.” It’s hard for me to move my body the way I want to. But with a walker\, I can walk with everyone. One day\, I saw Shun trying\, and I wanted to climb the slide too. I nodded deeply. It’ll be fine.
