However\, his 6-year-old son is awoken by the noise. After his father leaves\, the boy draws a picture of a fish with his crayons. In 1959\, Yasujiro Ozu remade his 1934 silent classic A Story of Floating Weeds in color with the celebrated cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa (Rashomon\, Ugetsu). Setting his later version in a seaside location\, Ozu otherwise preserves the details of his elegantly simple plot wherein an aging actor returns to a small town with his troupe and reunites with his former lover and illegitimate son\, a scenario that enrages his current mistress and results in heartbreak for all. Together\, the films offer a unique glimpse into the evolution of one of cinema’s greatest directors. A Story of Floating Weeds reveals Ozu in the midst of developing his mode of expression; Floating Weeds reveals his distinct style at its pinnacle. Please feel free to arrive early and enjoy browsing the library before the event.  \n——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– \n2020 Storytellers \nKoko Kikuchi \nBorn in Tohoku\, the northeast of Japan\, Koko has been involved in Katari since its inception. He specializes in the folktales of his native region of Iwate Prefecture. \nToshiki Mori \nAn actor\, storyteller\, singer and writer. Toshiki was born in Fukushima\, Japan. He started his career as storyteller of Kamishibai in Toronto and has been actively performing in Montreal and at various schools\, libraries and cultural events throughout Toronto. \nSeiko Shirafuji \nBorn in Yamaguchi Prefecture\, she is a singer and folk dancer and a retired medical doctor. Seiko has been performing in many community events and local festivals since 1995. \nYusuke Tanaka \nA veteran translator\, writer\, director of the Katari Storytelling Festival since 1994. He has been telling stories of the Ainu people\, and his own adaptations of Japanese folklore in many places including New York\, Seoul\, Kyoto\, Tokyo and Sapporo. \nNoriko Yamamoto \nA professional dancer\, mime\, silent storyteller\, and visual artist. Since moving to Toronto from Tokyo in 1994\, Noriko has added Nia to her repertoire. She performs regularly at schools\, libraries\, festivals\, and at various other events. \n\n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Italian Nobleman  Urbano Monte’s World Map of 1587: Sources\, Development\, and his Interest in Japan
DESCRIPTION:In this talk Chet Van Duzer will discuss a spectacular Italian world map made in 1587 by the Milanese noble Urbano Monte. It consists of 60 manuscript sheets designed to be assembled into a map on a north polar projection more than three meters in diameter. It is distinctive for its rich program of decoration\, its large hypothetical southern continent\, and Monte’s intention that it be mounted so that it could be rotated about its center. Its depiction of Japan is of particular interest\, as Monte had met members of the Tenshō embassy from Japan when they came to Milan in 1585\, and Van Duzer will discuss the map in the context of the explosion of European interest in Japan that followed the ambassadors’ visit. In the course of the talk Van Duzer will show how Monte made use of his many sources\, both textual and cartographic\, to create this unique and captivating image of the world\, and also show the development of his world maps over time. \n\nChet Van Duzer is a Researcher in Residence at the John Carter Brown Library and a board member of the Lazarus Project at the University of Rochester\, which brings multispectral imaging to cultural institutions around the world. He has published extensively on medieval and Renaissance maps. His book Sea Monsters on Medieval and Renaissance Maps was published in 2013 by the British Library\, and is now available in editions in German\, Russian\, Thai\, and Chinese (both mainland and Taiwan). His book The World for a King: Pierre Desceliers’ Map of 1550 was published in 2015 by the British Library\, and in 2018 Springer published his book Henricus Martellus’s World Map at Yale (c. 1491): Multispectral Imaging\, Sources\, and Influence. His research on Urbano Monte’s manuscript world map of 1587 was funded by a David Rumsey Research Fellowship at Stanford and the John Carter Brown Library. \n\nThis event is Co-Presented by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto \n \n

SUMMARY:Arms Race in Architecture
DESCRIPTION:An arms race is on in the worlds of computation and architectural fabrication research. Robots with increasingly large\, fast\, and powerful capabilities are available and can produce outputs with military-grade precision. The assumption is that through the use of these advanced tools\, architects will also advance the production of outputs\, but can these tools be developed with traditional forms of human engagement still in mind? Robots are not particularly adaptive. They do not integrate changes with ease—at least\, not yet. Humans\, on the other hand\, exhibit great capacity for adaptation but lack the precision of robots. How could precision and adaptation be combined in architecture\, specifically within the context of Japan\, where imperfections are embraced as part of an ideal form? This lecture will explore that question with a presentation of a series of small scale building projects in Tokyo. \n\n \nYusuke Obuchi is an Associate Professor in Architecture at the University of Tokyo\, where he has directed Obuchi Laboratory at the Department of Architecture since 2010. He is also a founding Co-director of the Advanced Design Studies Program\, which consists of Digital Fabrication Lab\, Sustainable Prototyping Lab\, Media Initiative Lab\, Design Think Tank\, Design Practice Lab\, Social Design Lab\, and Computational Unit. Prof. Obuchi was Co-Director of the Design Research Laboratory at the Architectural Association (AA) in London from 2005 to 2010\, and Course Master and Unit Master of the Architectural Association from 2003 to 2005. He studied architecture at Princeton University\, Southern California Institute of Architecture\, and the University of Toronto. He has previously taught at Princeton University\, Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design\, University of Kentucky\, and New Jersey Institute of Technology. \nProf. Obuchi teaches design studios\, workshops\, and seminar courses where he explores the concepts of materiality\, design systems\, computational design techniques\, and fabrication processes in contemporary architecture and design. He has previously worked for Reiser-Umemoto in New York and ROTO Architects in Los Angeles. And Tosca’s son – the last of their line – is Knut\, born in part three and raised by a human keeper in relatively happy circumstances in the Berlin zoo. \nYoko Tawada was born in Tokyo in 1960\, moved to Hamburg when she was twenty-two\, and then to Berlin in 2006. She writes in both Japanese and German\, and has published several books – stories\, novels\, poems\, plays\, essays – in both languages. SUMMARY:Welcome to TOKYO: Urban Change and International Spectacle from the Meiji Period to 2020
DESCRIPTION:Anticipating the arrival of tens of millions of foreign tourists attending the 2020 Olympic Games\, the Tokyo municipal government announced in 2014 a long-term city plan aiming to make Tokyo the “world’s best city.” With the Olympic Games a “springboard” for the city’s future\, the plan laid out a number of improvements designed to enhance the livability and commercial prosperity of the city along with the welfare of its residents. As with earlier improvement efforts in Tokyo following the 1868 Meiji Restoration\, the 1923 Great Kantō Earthquake and paving the way for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics\, the main component of the 2014 plan was infrastructure; namely\, new expressways\, improved port facilities\, and the creation of pleasant public spaces through the so-called “Tokyo Champs Elysées Project.” Once again\, Tokyo planners intent on putting the city’s best face forward to impress foreign visitors and to display Japanese prosperity started at street level. This talk reviews Tokyo urban improvement efforts from the Meiji Period to today to show how Tokyo planners have repeatedly looked to city streets as conduits of not only cars and commerce but as conveyors of culture and civilization. This suggests continuity in both Japanese urban planners’ abiding concern for foreign visitors’ reactions to the city’s appearance as well as their lasting perception and the interrelationship between Tokyo’s urban infrastructure\, commercial prosperity\, and international prestige. \n\nTristan R. Grunow is Associate Research Scholar at the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University. Previously\, he was Assistant Professor without Review at the University of British Columbia\, postdoctoral fellow at the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University\, and a Fulbright Fellow at Hōsei University in Tokyo. His current project charts the respacing of the built environment of Tokyo under the process of Japanese state-formation and empire-building. \nRegistration for this event is now closed. SUMMARY:The BLINDSPOT of JAPAN
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will feature Eric Cazdyn’s “Blindspot Machine”–a unique film rig that questions what a blindspot is and teaches us about how we look\, how we think\, how we desire\, and how change occurs in the world. In this iteration of his multi-faceted The Blindspot Variations project\, Cazdyn brings his “Blindspot Machine” to Japan and shoots at seven different sites: 1) Tezuka Architect’s Fuji Kindergarten (Tokyo); 2) Ito Toyo’s Sendai Mediatheque (Sendai); 3) Ishinomaki Hill (overview site of the 2011 tsunami disaster); 4) Ishinomaki Lowlands (ground-zero of the 2011 tsunami); 5) Tajiro-jima (cat island/terminal island\, Tohoku); 6) Isozaki Arata’s Art Mito Tower (Ibaraki); and 7) Kurokawa Kisho’s Nakagin Capsule Tower (Tokyo). This film-lecture connects the problematics of the ground-zero and the blindspot to architecture\, political possibilities\, life and death\, as well as to the Buddhist inspired category of Ma (or negative time-space). \n\nEric Cazdyn is Distinguished Professor of Aesthetics and Politics at the University of Toronto\, where he teaches courses on critical theory\, film and video\, architecture\, and Japan. He has written the following books: Nothing: Three Inquiries in Buddhism (U of Chicago Press\, 2015)\, The Already Dead: The New Time of Culture\, Politics and Illness (Duke\, 2012); After Globalization (Wiley-Blackwell\, 2011); and The Flash of Capital: Film and Geopolitics in Japan (Duke\, 2002); and is the editor of Trespasses: Selected Writings of Masao Miyoshi (Duke\, 2010). Cazdyn is also a filmmaker whose most recent work\, The Blindspot Variations\, has been screened and performed in Japan\, the US\, Mexico\, Canada and throughout Europe. Japanese with English subtitles \nUgetsu\, directed by master filmmaker Kenji Mizoguchi\, is a beautiful supernatural tale set in 16th century Kyoto and Shiga prefecture. The films screenwriters Matsutaro Kawaguchi and Yoshikata Yoda wove together two stories from Akinari Uede‘s best-known work\, Ugetsu Monogatari (Tales of Moonlight and Rain\, 1776) and French writer Guy de Maupassant‘s Decore! \, 1883. The two stories from Ugetsu Monogatari\, The House in the Thicket and The Lust of the White Serpent (Asaji ga Yado and Jasei no In) are part of a collection of supernatural tales\, which are largely taken from traditional Japanese and Chinese ghost stories. \nBy the time he made Ugetsu\, Kenji Mizoguchi was already an elder statesman of Japanese cinema\, fiercely revered by Akira Kurosawa and other directors of a younger generation. And with this exquisite ghost story\, a fatalistic wartime tragedy\, he created a touchstone of his art\, his long takes and sweeping camera guiding the viewer through a delirious narrative about two villagers whose pursuit of fame and fortune leads them far astray from their loyal wives. Moving between the terrestrial and the otherworldly\, Ugetsu reveals essential truths about the ravages of war\, the plight of women\, and the pride of men. \nThe film stars Machiko Kyō\, Mitsuko Mito\, Kinuyo Tanaka\, Masayuki Mori\, and Ei Ozawa. DESCRIPTION:  \nManga Hokusai Manga:\nApproaching the Master’s Compendium\nfrom the Perspective of Contemporary Comics\n「マンガ・北斎・漫画」展 — 現代日本マンガから見た『北斎漫画』\nJanuary 16 – April 23\, 2020\nIn light of Japan’s contemporary comics and their global proliferation\, the 19th-century Hokusai Manga is attracting increasing interest. Fans worldwide tend to even regard this pictorial compendium by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai as the origin of today’s manga. But the outward appearance of these two types of manga does not immediately suggest a continuous tradition. Do present-day graphic narratives and the master’s “diverse drawings” share anything other than a name? Unlike past exhibitions of Hokusai’s work\, Manga Hokusai Manga approaches the Hokusai Manga from the perspective of contemporary Japanese comics\, focusing on genre\, pictorial storytelling and participatory culture rather than the integration of word and image or the role of popular characters.
