The ancient castle is a symbol of Okinawa’s cultural heritage\, and also an important cultural and historical symbol for Japan and for cultures around the world. \nThe planned Okinawa Film series will continue\, but take on a different significance with news of this tragedy. We encourage you to come out to show support and learn more about this beautiful region.  \n\nThe Okinawa Film Series celebrates the diverse and rich culture of Okinawa. The first two programs will be made up of seven short films. Takeshi\, a junior school student and the son of the guesthouse owner\, is uncomfortable being in front of an actress who he has seen only on TV; yet he is asked to take Asuka on a tour of the island. While walking the island\, Asuka sees a Kerama deer\, a natural treasure. As she listens to Takeshi’s father tell the story about the Kerama deer\, Asuka has flashbacks of harsh words of her co-workers and becomes depressed. Life on the island with Jo gradually changes Asuka’s outlook. \n \nTREASURE HUNT わたしの宝もの \nDirected by Takako Miyahira (2015) 20 min. \n“Wanna know a secret?” Lan\, the new\, quiet girl in class gives Mie and Hana an origami rabbit. In the rabbit’s folds hides a treasure map. Answering riddles one by one leads Mie and Hana to an adventure through Naha\, a city shared by the old and the new\, children and grownups. Between Lan’s lies and truths\, the two find a great treasure hidden in the City. \n  \nGOAT WALKING やぎの散歩  \nDirected by Ryugo Nakamura (2008) 10 min. \nThe goat\, raised with care for the son’s wedding\, runs away and meets a young boy.\nThe story takes place in a hamlet in Yanbaru\, where old Okinawan scenery still remains. A goat\, carefully raised by an old man for his son’s wedding celebration\, runs away on the day of the wedding\, causing an upheaval in the village. As the goat runs away in frenzy\, what it sees is the beautiful scenery of Okinawa. The goat meets a young boy\, and becomes aware of its own fate… \n  \nTHE PATH OF THE KUMIODORI うんじゅぬ花道 \nDirected by Chikako Yamashiro\, Atsushi Sunagawa (2013) 20 min. \nMuseum worker Takeshi Kamiya manages to find time every day to practice the traditional Ryukyu art of “Kumiodori” (traditional Okinawan musical theater) and shows the path of the artist as he works and performs on stage. \nHis son had experienced lonely days without his father who was almost never home between his time practicing and appearing on stage\, but eventually decides to join his busy father in aiming to be a performer of “Kumiodori”. Japanese author Kyoko Nakajima accounts one woman’s nostalgic memories as recounted near the end of her life\, in The Little House. Portugese author\, journalist and playwright Inês Pedrosa will share the story of two lovers in limbo\, still conversing with each other after one has died\, in Still I Miss You. Israeli author Zeruya Shalev exposes how old passions can return\, testing our capacity to make choices about what is most essential in life\, in Pain. The conversation will be moderated by Steven W. Beattie. Hosted by David Yoon. \n\nPARTICIPANTS \nKyoko Nakajima \n \nKyoko Nakajima was born in Tokyo in 1964. After working at a publishing firm and as a freelance writer\, she made her debut as a novelist in 2003 with Futon. In 2010 her novel Chisai ouchi won the Naoki Prize. This was followed by the Izumi Kyoka Prize for Literature for Tsuma ga shiitake datta koro (When My Wife Was a Shiitake) in 2014 and the Kawai Hayao Story Prize and Historical Fiction Writers Club Award for Katazuno! (One-Horn!) in 2015. Her other works include Ito no koi (Ito’s Romance) and Chobo zekka (A Magnificent View). Supported by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto. \n  \nInês Pedrosa \nInês Pedrosa is a portuguese writer and translator. She graduated in Communication Sciences at the Universidade Nova\, in Lisbon\, where she is now doing a PHD in Comparative Literature. She was the editor of the portuguese edition of Marie Claire magazine and the director of Fernando Pessoa’s House Museum. Currently\, she does cultural programs in the public radio and participates in a weekly political debate in public television.She has published 22 books\, including novels\, short-stories\, essays\, and biographies. Her books have been published in the United States of America\, Brazil\, Croatia\, Germany\, Italy and Spain. Supported by Camões\, Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua. \n  \nZeruya Shalev \nZeruya Shalev was born at Kibbutz Kinneret. Set in Japan in the 1930s and 1940s\, the story introduces Taki Nunomiya\, an elderly woman and former housemaid\, looking back on her golden years. The narrative that follows delivers striking stories of love and human connections during a time of war\, spanning from Yamagata to Tokyo. The film stars Haru Kuroki\, who won the Silver Bear for Best Actress in this film at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. Known in particular for her subtle narrative style\, Kyoko Nakajima will discuss her use of place and time in the narrative of her 2010 Naoki award winning novel The Little House (小さいおうち)\, to be released in English in Canada on November 29\, 2019. The writers will also discuss current trends in both Japanese and Canadian literature as they discuss their experiences. DESCRIPTION:FANS ONSTAGE\nHandheld Splendours of the Japanese Traditional Performing Arts\n \nAn exhibition presented by The Japan Foundation\nin conjunction with Cinema Kabuki 2019 Toronto\nSpecial thanks to Tomatsuya-Fukui in Kyoto and Bunsendō in Asakusa\, Tokyo\n  \nOctober 17\, 2019 – January 11\, 2020 \nADMISSION: FREE \n\nJapan’s association with fans can be traced back to the Nara period (8th century) with the cypress fans made of wooden hinged strips\, followed by the invention of paper folded fans in the Heian period (9th century).  As early as the late 10th century the paper folded fans\, which differed from flat unfoldable fans\, were exported from Japan to the Korean peninsula and China as luxury imports.  In the West\, in ancient Egypt and Greece\, there were records of folded fans\, but the tradition of using fans died out during the Middle Ages.  Whereas in the East the new technique of making fans – the application of paper on both sides of the fan ribs – was brought from China to Japan at the beginning of the Muromachi period (early 14th century).  This new method of manufacture revolutionized the production and export of fans.  Through Portuguese and Dutch traders folding fans were spread out from Japan to the global market and other cultures. \nPaper folded fans have been widely used in people’s daily lives in Japan\, but also in the ceremonies of religions and politics\, and particularly most effectively in the performing arts. \nNoh theatre\, which originated in the 15th century\, uses fans in the same symbolic way as its masks.  Noh actors are aiming on stage for some kind of unification of their souls with the spiritual being they find in the masks and fans.  Therefore\, the treatment of the objects is as rigid as the actors’ own bodies in order to achieve internal energy flow.  The faces are covered by masks and the hands are often invisible\, covered by the costume.  One can see the fans as the replacement of hands\, but the performers keep their wrists immobile to create concentrated\, abstract movements.  On the contrary\, in Kabuki theatre – founded in the early 17th century – the actors’ wrists and arms are freely moving their fans.  In Kabuki\, the external effects are established by fans\, reflecting commoners’ aesthetics.  This is the opposite of the Noh theatre aesthetic which reflects Samurai warriors’ philosophy.  In Kabuki dance\, performers turn their fans from front to back quickly\, or create swaying waves\, maneuvering their fans with their arms and wrists.  They even toss fans into the air and catch them. \nThe difference of the internal versus external use of fans in Noh and Kabuki is physically evident in the proportion of the fans.  Noh theatre fans have a silhouette almost like an upside-down equilateral triangle\, whereas Kabuki fans are wider horizontally.  In spite of these physical differences\, one thing is common: they are all beautifully handcrafted.  In both Noh and Kabuki\, fans are far beyond decoration or props.  They are the handheld splendours which can conjure universal imagery in the theatrical experience. \n  \nOctober 17\, 2019 – January 11\, 2020 \nGALLERY HOURS \nMon 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nTues 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nWed 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nThurs 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nFri 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \n  \nSaturday openings: \n11:00 am – 4:00 pm \nOctober 19\, November 2\, 16\, 30\, December 14\, 2019\, January 11\, 2020 \nClosed: Other Saturdays and Sundays\, November 11 (Remembrance Day) \nChristmas & New Year’s closing: December 21\, 2019 – January 5\, 2020

SUMMARY:Post-3.11 Auditory Cultures: Sonic Responses to Life After Loss
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores sound-based cultural productions made by those affected by the disasters that occurred and began in March 2011—the earthquake\, tsunami\, and radiation release. These include a sound artist signaling radiation uncertainties and political geographies in an art installation; a phone booth built to allow users to communicate with their deceased loved ones; a musician who samples voices and soundscapes from her lost hometown; a Fukushima University professor conducting an ongoing soundscape archive. The productions gesture at ongoing social issues in subtle ways afforded by sound and recording. In other words\, they force us to ask: how to listen to radiation that never sounds\, to hear a house that is not there\, to attend closely to voices unsure of what to say? \nJosh Trichilo is a PhD candidate in the Humanities department at York University\, Toronto\, and was a 2018-2019 Japan Foundation Fellow. Josh’s work focuses on sound\, auditory culture\, media\, and trauma. Informed by both the fellowship and his experiences as a JET participant in Fukushima from 2011-2014\, he studies soundscape archiving\, sound art\, and experimental music among those affected by the 2011 Tōhoku triple disaster. \n

DESCRIPTION:Mr. Sebastian Masuda\, an icon of Harajuku\, is bringing his participatory art project called “Time After Time Capsule” this summer. \n \nPlease join his talk and capsule event on August 22 at the Japan Foundation\, Toronto.\nIn his talk\, Mr. Masuda will discuss the concept of Kawaii culture and Harajuku-style\, its global phenomenon and evolution over the past two decades\, and his outlooks on its future trends and projects. The second half of the event will be the capsule event. Bring a Kawaii item (something cute\, colourful or handmade\, or one of your favourite items) OR create a small craft on-site\, and add it to the capsule for the future you. \nTime After Time Capsule is an ongoing art project which invites the public to contribute personal items to fill a translucent sculpture that will travel around the world. Each participant is invited to offer or create colourfully decorated items of personal value\, which will be placed in the translucent sculptured capsule. \n  \n \nYour personal Kawaii item must be under 15 cm (on its longest side). It could be a key chain from your favourite vacation\, an accessory from a close friend\, an item from your most memorable event or fondest experience! \nThere will be materials provided to create a letter to put into the capsule on-site\, but everyone is welcome to bring their own small item or pre-made letter from home! \nPlease come and join us for this wonderful opportunity. \n  \n \n  \n\n\n \n\n  \nSebastian Masuda:\nArtist / Art director / Japan Cultural Envoy / Visiting Scholar at NYU /\nVisiting professor for Kyoto University of Art and Design and Yokohama College of Art and Design \n Mr. Masuda was born in 1970. He is a visiting professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design and Yokohama College of Art and Design. After active involvement in theater performances and modern art\, he opened “6%DOKIDOKI\,” a shop with the concept of “Sensational Kawaii” in Harajuku in 1995. Through his world tour titled “Harajuku Kawaii Experience”\, which started in 2009\, Mr. Masuda has been actively promoting Harajuku culture on a global scale. He gained worldwide attention for his PV production for “PONPONPON”\, the debut single of Japanese pop icon “Kyary Pamyu Pamyu”. He has also been active as an artist and art director to contextualize Harajuku Kawaii culture by\, for example\, establishing the concept restaurant “KAWAII MONSTER CAFÉ” in Tokyo. \nMr. Masuda’s first solo exhibition “Colorful Rebellion – Seventh Nightmare” opened in New York in 2014. He is now working on a participatory art project called “Time After Time Capsule” around the world.

DESCRIPTION:Due to reaching capacity\, the RSVP is closed for additional guests.  \nFor many learners of Japanese\, kanji present a significant hurdle in mastering the language. In this lecture\, Dr. Yukiyo Hamakawa (Mejiro University) will not teach kanji\, but instead look at how people can best learn them\, including: \n・Various methods to organize and create associations to better remember kanji. \n・How to make learning more enjoyable – and effective. \n・Where and how kanji learning is utilized. \nAnyone who is interested in learning kanji\, teaching kanji\, or just learning about kanji is welcome to join! \nInquiries\nFor inquiries\, please contact Noriko Saito at nsaito@jftor.org. \n\n \nYukiyo Hamakawa is an associate professor in the Department of Japanese and Japanese Language Education at Mejiro University\, and has her PhD from Saitama University. Her work focuses on kanji education (both learning and instruction) within the field of Japanese language education. She has been involved in several books on teaching kanji\, including editing 『日本語教師のための実践・漢字指導』 (くろしろ出版 2010)\, and co-authoring the book on teaching letters and vocabulary\, 『文字・語彙を教える』 (ひつじ書房 2011) in the Japan Foundation’s Nihongo Kyôjuhô series. She has been involved with the JSL Kanji Research Group since 2004\, and 日本語教育に関わる教職員のためのメンタルヘルス研究会 (Mental Health Study Group for Japanese Language Educators) since 2018.

DESCRIPTION:Interested in learning more about our year-long “Japanese Together” language courses?\nThis summer\, we will be hosting a drop-in information session that will cover all levels offered in the 2019-2020 school year: \n・Starter Course: Japanese Together 1\n・Elementary Course: Japanese Together 2\n・Late-Elementary Course: Japanese Together 3\n・Pre-Intermediate Course: Japanese Together 4\n・Intermediate Course: Japanese Together 5 \nIf you would like to know more about how our classes are run\, or are not quite sure which level is right for you\, please join us! The information session will include general overview of our classes\, as well as sample activities to let you know what level of Japanese will be covered in the various courses and what will be expected of students. \nRegistration is not required\, but feel free to let us know you’re coming by signing up below! \n* Please note that this information session is not a language class. \nWhat is “Japanese Together?”\nAt the Japan Foundation\, Toronto\, we offer term-based Japanese Together language courses using the textbook series Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture\, which was developed by the Japan Foundation. Marugoto is a textbook based on the Japan Foundation Standard for Japanese Language Education (or “JF Standard” – for more information\, please click here). Through studying with us in our Japanese Together language courses\, you will learn to complete various “Can-do” in Japanese! \nWe offer courses for everyone from complete beginners (Japanese Together 1) to intermediate speakers(Japanese Together 5). \nNot sure which level is right for you?\nClick here for an online level checker which will guide you to see which “Japanese Together” course might be suitable for your current level. \nInquiries\nIf you have any questions\, please contact us at koza@jftor.org!
