Noriko\, 21 years his junior\, put her artistic ambitions on hold to be a wife and mother — and an assistant to her demanding husband. Now\, Noriko’s acclaimed “Cutie” series of drawings\, depicting the relationship between the title character and a volatile figure named Bullie\, is turning their world upside down. Winner\, Directing Award: U.S. Documentary\, 2013 Sundance Film Festival. \n \nIkigai Film Series \nWhat keeps you going? How do you stay happy\, and live a long life? These are some universal questions that will be explored in this film series that looks into the concept of IKIGAI. In Japanese\, IKIGAI生き甲斐 essentially means “reason for being” or the thing that makes your life worthwhile\, and we will catch a glimpse of how IKIGAI plays a role in the lives of remarkable Japanese people in these four documentaries.

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of National Indigenous Day\, and to bring awareness of the indigenous people of Japan\, we invite you to join us for a special screening of the documentary Tokyo Ainu directed by Hiroshi Moriya and produced by the Tokyo Ainu Film Production Committee. June 21 is also the summer solstice\, or in Japanese 夏至 (geshi)\, another reason to celebrate and for a chance to cool down after the longest day of the year. \n \nTokyo Ainu\n \nDirected by Hiroshi Moriya\, 2011 [114 minutes]\nTokyo Ainu features the Ainu\, the indigenous peoples of Japan\, living in Greater Tokyo who are actively promoting their traditional culture in a metropolitan urban environment\, away from their traditional homeland\, Hokkaido. Shedding a common assumption that all Ainu live in Hokkaido\, the film captures the feelings\, thoughts and aspirations of Ainu people who try to follow the Ainu way no matter where they live. \n  \nDIRECTOR\, CINEMATOGRAPHER\, EDITOR: Hiroshi Moriya\, \nHiroshi Moriya is a former TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) director\, who directed documentary programs on indigenous people in Siberia and in the Amazon rainforest. At one time he travelled from the Arctic through the five continents to the Antarctic\, filming wild animals. He received the High Vision Award 2000 for his “The Philosophers of the Forest\, the Mehinaku”\, which is a documentary film on an Amazon indigenous people. \nHe resigned from TBS in order to pursue a land- based lifestyle and learned Permaculture\, a design theory to create sustainable life\, while being engaged in farming and gardening. We will have a rush line starting 30 minutes before the event\, and will start to release unclaimed seats 10 minutes before the event. \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto is delighted to host Mr. Junichi Mitsubori as part of the 90th Anniversary Celebrations of Canada-Japan Relations\, for a special Japanese confectionery art/ wagashi demonstration. In this 40 minute performance\, Mr. Mitsubori will demonstrate the crafting of some exquisite nerikiri wagashi pieces. Speciality tools will be used in addition to some free-hand crafting\, to turn pieces of pliable and colourful nerikiri dough into artistic craft. Q and A to follow. \nJunichi Mitsubori is a third-generation wagashi artisan hailing from Yokosuka City\, Kanagawa. He founded his own school of wagashi\, Ichika-ryu of Kadō\, which uses bespoke utensils\, calculated gestures\, lighting and music to produce a highly stylized wagashi experience. Mr. Mitsubori’s delicate yet dynamic wagashi and his style of presentation has spread awareness of wagashi to an international audience.

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of CONTACT Photography Festival\, we will be screening three documentaries\, featuring the beauty of photography\, architecture\, light and the creative minds behind them. On May 23\, we will explore this with the screening of two documentaries together\, Memories of Origin: Hiroshi Sugimoto\, followed by KOCHUU: Japanese Architecture/Influence and Origin. Then on June 4\, we will screen a serene portrait of an artist in A Room of Her Own: Rei Naito and Light. Two of the films\, Memories of Origin and A Room of Her Own were directed by Yuko Nakamura.   \nA Room of Her Own: Rei Naito and Light  \nArtist Rei Naito reminds us of the faint presence of things that are not visible unless we make the effort to see them. An artist shrouded in mystery\, Naito has up to now refused to be filmed on camera. After two years of exchanges with the artist\, this documentary attempts to get close to the essence of Naito’s art\, which expresses the lights of existence\, without pointing the camera at theartist herself. The story involves the dynamism of the pulsating space of the “Matrix” at the Teshima Art Museum\, water\, light\, and five women who are enticed by the world of Naito’s art. The Teshima Art Museum\, which integrates a construction by architect Ryue Nishizawa (co-founder of SANAA)\, the artwork “Matrix” by artist Rei Naito\, and the natural surroundings\, is located in the middle of the beautiful Teshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea. SUMMARY:Memories of Origin: Hiroshi Sugimoto & KOCHUU
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of CONTACT Photography Festival\, we will be screening three documentaries\, featuring the beauty of photography\, architecture\, light and the creative minds behind them. On May 23\, we will explore this with the screening of two documentaries together\, Memories of Origin: Hiroshi Sugimoto\, followed by KOCHUU: Japanese Architecture/Influence and Origin. Then on June 4\, we will screen a serene portrait of an artist in A Room of Her Own: Rei Naito and Light. Two of the films\, Memories of Origin and A Room of Her Own were directed by Yuko Nakamura.    \n\nMemories of Origin: HIROSHI SUGIMOTO\nThis documentary follows 200 days in life of the contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. \nHiroshi Sugimoto is a leading presence in the world of modern art. He has taken the medium of photography and perceiving it as a form of conceptual art\,has extended the barriers of expression. He is the winner of many prestigious awards and his photographs are sold for millions of yen at overseas auctions.\nThe film shows the sites of the Architecture series shot in southern France\, the huge installation art 17th Biennale of Sydney\, his new work Mathematics at Provence\, his art studio in New York while working on Lighting Fields\, his recent direction and production of tradition Japanese performance art and so on. It thoroughly pursues the questions that Sugimoto’s works pose- \n“living in modern times\,what are these works trying to tell us?”\nMEMORIES OF ORIGIN: Hiroshi Sugimoto was first broadcast on Japan’s program WOWOW on December\, 2010. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Ryusuke Hamaguchi Retrospective: The Theatre of Emotions co-presented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and Cinema Moderne taking place in Montreal\, we will be featuring three special film screenings of his films in Toronto as well. \n\nPASSION\nDirected by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (115 min.) 2008 Japanese with English subtitles \nFollowing the film will be a MASTER CLASS with director Ryusuke Hamaguchi. \nFilmmakers\, cinema studies students and film fans are welcome!\nA young couple announces their engagement at a celebration with friends whose reactions\, however\, indicate that within the group lurk unspoken\, contradictory feelings concealing affairs of the distant past. While the women go home after the celebration\, the men carry on and end up at the flat of a mutual girlfriend. During that night and the following days\, tension between the participants rapidly comes to the surface and their mutual bonds fundamentally change. \nIn Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s delicately-conceived graduation film\, passion can suggest affection\, anger\, or suffering. SUMMARY:MARUGOTO Intermediate Japanese Language Class: "Forms of transport in my town"
DESCRIPTION:This class is targeted towards intermediate-level Japanese learners and will cover the “Forms of transport in my town” topic from Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture Intermediate 2 (B1). \nUsing various materials\, students will work towards the expansion of vocabulary and grammatical accuracy and fluency in spoken and written Japanese. This class will also look at communication strategies as well as the socio-cultural aspects of the language. \nBy the end of this particular class\, students will be able to: \n\nlisten to another person’s experience of using transport in another country and understand the details of what happened and the person’s sense of values that forms the background to the story.\ndescribe the situation in detail and give concrete advice to a person who is experiencing problems with transit.\nexplain the features of a form of transport\, how to use it\, and things to be careful of in concrete terms.\nread a number of comments about a form of transport on the internet\, for example\, and understand a variety of opinions.\nwrite about an experience on public transport and one’s feelings about it\, on a social networking site\, for example.\n\nClass Schedule and Fees\nThis is a 6-lesson class running from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm on the following Saturday afternoons: \nMay 11\, May 25\, June 8\, June 22\, July 6\, July 20\n* As each class builds on the one before it\, we ask that you attend all classes. \nThe cost of one class (6 lessons) is $150\, and the fees are due on the first day of class (cash or cheque only).
