SUMMARY:Japanese Culture Through the Lens of Traditional Crafts
DESCRIPTION:What is culture? And what does it mean to preserve it? \nWhile we often appreciate and seek to preserve cultures that have been cultivated over long histories\, it is a rare opportunity to reflect on what truly shapes culture—and how culture\, in turn\, shapes us. \nThe speaker\, Mr. Tokunaga\, has spent 2 years on a project visiting 68 traditional artisans across Kyoto\, interviewing each craftsperson and developing the Red List of Kyoto’s Traditional Crafts. Through this journey\, he has continually asked himself these very questions and will now share the insights that have emerged. \nWe invite you to join this talk as a chance for all of us to reflect on and reconnect with culture and perhaps to see Japanese culture from a fresh and different perspective. \nFree admission. Register below. \n\nTOKUNAGA Yuki \nMr. Tokunaga is the founder of the Culpedia\, an organization dedicated to fostering cultural exchange and preserving traditional arts. He is also a collaborative researcher at the Open Lab for Emergent Strategy Research (ROLES) at the Institute of Industrial Science\, the University of Tokyo. \nThrough Culpedia\, he leads cultural initiatives including research into Kyotoʼs Red List of traditional crafts and the creation of paintings by translating Japanese stories for international artists unfamiliar with those tales. He has lectured on Japanese and global culture in over 10 countries worldwide and has visited more than 80 countries in total. \nStriving to act not just as a linguistic interpreter but as an “interpreter of values\,” Mr. Tokunaga continues to champion meaningful cross-cultural dialogue and cultural preservation efforts.

SUMMARY:Toilet (film screening)
DESCRIPTION:Toilet \nWednesday\, April 16\, 6:00PM (ET) \nDoors open 5:30PM | Film Screening | In-Person | JFT Event Hall  \nDirected by OGIGAMI Naoko • 2010 • Drama • 109 minutes • Presented in English • Trailer\n \nJoin us for a special National Canadian Film Day screening of Toilet (2010)\, a heartwarming and quirky film directed by OGIGAMI Naoko. Shot in Toronto with Japanese and Canadian talents both on and off screen\, Toilet offers a tender exploration of family\, grief\, and connection.  \nRay (Alex House)\, a Gundam-obsessed engineer\, finds his quiet\, solitary life turned upside-down after the passing of his mother. He moves in with his reclusive brother Maury (David Rendall)\, once a brilliant pianist and now a victim of panic disorder who never leaves the house; his younger sister Lisa (Tatiana Maslany)\, a university student who tends to look down her nose at everyone; and his Japanese grandmother\, affectionally called “Baachan” (Masako Motai)\, who speaks no English. Through mishaps and shared memories\, they gradually rediscover what it means to be a family.\n \nFree admission. Register below. \nSupported by:  \n \n  \n\nDirector Profile: \n \nOGIGAMI Naoko\, born 1972 in Chiba Prefecture\, is a Japanese film director\, screenwriter\, and cinematographer. After graduating with a film production degree from the University of Southern California\, Ogigami returned to Japan and first began gaining attention after winning several prizes at PIA Film Festival for her short film Hoshino-Kun\, Yumeno-Kun (2001). Her first feature film\, Yoshino’s Barber Shop premiered at the PIA Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival in 2004\, winning awards at both. Ogigami continued to garner international recognition with her films such as Glasses (2007) and Close-Knit (2017)\, both screened and won awards at the Berlin International Film Festival. Her films often explore themes of human connection\, cultural differences\, and personal transformation.\n \n\n \n  \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:JFT Workshop for Japanese Language Teachers:
\nお問い合わせ先：齋藤典子　Noriko_Saito@jpf.go.jp

Thank you for your understanding! \nFree admission. Register below. \n\nDirector Profile: \n \nHAMAGUCHI Ryusuke is one of the most acclaimed contemporary filmmakers in Japan\, known for his intimate explorations of human relationships. A graduate of Tokyo University and the Tokyo University of the Arts’ graduate film program\, Hamaguchi started gaining attention in his home country with the graduate film Passion (2008). He went on to gain international recognition with Happy Hour (2015)\, a quietly monumental five-hour portrait of four women navigating personal upheaval. \nHis breakout continued with Asako I & II (2018)\, which competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes\, and was followed by Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (2021)\, which won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale. That same year\, Drive My Car premiered to widespread acclaim\, winning Best Screenplay at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Drive My Car was the first Japanese film to receive a Best Picture nomination\, and Hamaguchi became the third Japanese director to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Director. \n\n \n  \n
