We will be screening three films by Kore-eda – two of which includes Kirin Kiki in the cast. Kiki was a frequent collaborator in his films\, including Shoplifters\, her last film\, which won Kore-eda the prestigious Palme D’Or at Cannes earlier this year. \n \nAFTER LIFE ワンダフルライフ\nDecember 18\, 2018 6:30 PM  \nDirected by Hirokazu Kore-eda [1998] 118 min. \nIn this acclaimed Japanese film\, a group of people who have recently died find themselves in a limbo realm resembling a relatively mundane building. Counselors\, including Takashi (Arata) and Shiori (Erika Oda)\, are on hand to help new arrivals pick one memory from their lives to bring with them into eternity. SUMMARY:Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers
DESCRIPTION:JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers\nThe JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers is a study group where the participants play leading roles. \nDiscussion topics are decided on by participants on the spot. Participants are welcome to suggest topics related to any problems they may have or something they want to hear others’ opinions on\, etc. The goal is not to listen success stories\, but for participants to work together to solve problems. \nExamples of topics currently requested are:\n● Efficient kanji teaching methods for Chinese students\n● What do you do if students cannot remember hiragana or katakana at all?\n● Recruitment and retention\n● Separating kanji-ken and non-kanji-ken students\n● Examples of the Communicative Approach\, etc. \nWhoever suggests the topic decides what language it will be discussed in. SUMMARY:CONNECTION & CATASTROPHE: Media Theory and the Occult Film Boom in Japan
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1970s Japan was in the grip of an “occult boom” that exploded across popular media. This was a fad\, but also something more: A popular media theory that tried to come to terms with a new media ecology. The ripple effects could be felt for decades in pop culture\, politics\, and social movements. \nThis talk will outline the occult boom in film and track its roots in a new relationship to media. It will trace its route through media mix zombies\, the demise of the student movement and film producers’ conversations with UFOs. Focusing on two basic fantasies of a new kind of connectivity it will follow the logic of the occult film boom to its unexpected catastrophes. \nOn Thursday\, November 22\, Professor Zahlten will be in Montreal to give another talk supported by the Japan Foundation\, Toronto\, The Electric Ecology: Models of Connectivity in Japan’s Media Century\, at Concordia University. \nDuring October and November\, the Japan Foundation Toronto is hosting a film series\, DARK & OCCULT Films From Japan. Come get better acquainted with the subject of this talk by watching the occult films of 1970s & 1980s Japan. \n\nAlexander Zahlten is Associate Professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. His work centers on film and audiovisual culture in East Asia\, with a focus on Japan. His recent work touches on topics such as film’s transition from environment to ecology\, ‘amateur’ film and media production\, or the different modes of media theorization that media cultures produce. \nRecent publications include the co-edited volume Media Theory in Japan (Duke University Press\, 2017\, with Marc Steinberg) and his monograph The End of Japanese Cinema: Industrial Genres\, National Times\, and Media Ecologies (Duke University Press\, 2017)\, which maps the transformations of the film industry in Japan from the 1960s – 2000s. \nAmong others he has curated film programs at the German Film Museum or the Japan Society New York. He was Program Director for the Nippon Connection Film Festival\, the largest festival for film from Japan\, from 2002 to 2010.

The films are in conjunction with a special lecture by Japanese film scholar Professor Alex Zahlten in November. Prof. Zahlten will discuss some basic shifts in the relationship to media / the media environment that transpired in Japan during this shifting bubble era. Some viewers may find the films disturbing. Panic ensues as the desperate civilians flee the coastal areas. Volcanic eruptions and and firestorms burn cities to the ground. Viewer discretion is advised. \nAn action thriller with distinctive artistic beauty\, portraying a nightmare detective who unravels the mystery of murder cases with his special ability to enter into other people’s dreams.\nGhastly\, locked-room murders happen one after another. Victims are all would-be suicides who have died as a result of blood loss from cutting their own bodies. They all seem to have been killed while being troubled with a nightmare after talking to a man called “Zero” on the phone. Detective Keiko Kirishima (Hitomi) suspects the incidents are somehow linked with the nightmare. She requests the cooperation of the nightmare detective Kyoichi (Matsuda Ryuhei). Frustrated with his adamant refusal to cooperate\, Detective Wakamiya (ANDO Masanobu) makes contact with Zero\, who has the ability to go into other people’s dreams and kill them. Danger befalls the Detective. Kyoichi finally makes a move to save Wakamiya\, but is unable to save him from being murdered. Deploring her colleague’s death\, Kirishima also decides to confront Zero. She narrowly escapes death thanks to Kyoichi\, and they succeed in tracking down the murderer.\nDirected by Tsukamoto Shinya of A Snake of June (Rokugatsu no Hebi). Her first novel to appear in English\, Convenience Store Woman\, is no exception to this line of thematic inquiry. In this conversation\, her first appearance in North America\, Murata will discuss with Jocelyne Allen how her questions about social norms inform her work\, from her writing process and early influences\, the treatment of women in Japanese society\, to her own years of working in convenience stores. Murata will also read from her award-winning novel and talk about the convenience store in Japan\, its place in Japanese society\, and how it differs from convenience stores in Canada. \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto and TIFA (Toronto International Festival of Authors) look forward to hosting award-winning author Sayaka Murata. \nFor books by Sayaka Murata available in the Japan Foundation\, Toronto library\, click here. \n\nSayaka Murata was born and raised in Chiba\, Japan (just east of Tokyo)\, and then attended Tamagawa University on the western edge of Tokyo. She is known for exploring nonconformity in society for men and women\, particularly with regard to gender roles\, parenthood\, and sex. Throughout her writing career Murata has worked as a part-time convenience store clerk in Tokyo and draws much of her inspiration from her observations of everyday life in there. \nMurata received the  Gunzo Prize for New Writers for her first novel\, Jyunyū (Breastfeeding) in 2003\, the Mishima Yukio Prize for Shiro-iro no machi no\, sono hone no taion no (Of Bones\, Of Body Heat\, of Whitening City) in 2013\, the Noma Literary New Face Prize for Gin-iro no Uta (Silver Song) in 2009\, and the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 2016 for Konbini ningen (Convenience Store Woman) which became her first book to be translated into English in 2018. \nJocelyne Allen is a Japanese translator\, interpreter\, and writer based out of Toronto\, Canada\, after a decade in Japan. During her time in the Land of the Rising Sun\, she worked as a magazine columnist\, interpreted for foreign correspondents\, and toured with a Japanese drum group. During her career as a professional translator of creative and pop culture works\, she has translated a large number of short stories\, novels\, and manga\, including the Eisner Award winning Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths. As an interpreter\, she has worked with many of Japan’s most celebrated manga artists and authors\, including Taiyo Matsumoto\, Aya Kanno\, and Hideo Furukawa. She is also the author of the novel You and the Pirates. \n\nMs. Murata will also be part of the Festival Pop-up at Union Station between 12:00pm and 2:00pm on Saturday\, October 27\, as well as participating in a panel at Harbourfront Centre on Saturday\, October 27 at 4:00pm. \nAfter her appearances in Toronto\, Ms. Murata will head to the United States for events in Iowa and New York. Viewer discretion is advised. \nHiroshi (Asano Tadanobu) is involved in a car accident that causes him to lose his memory\, and develops an obsessive interest in medical books. He subsequently enrolls in medical school and in a dissection class\, his group is assigned the body of a young woman. Hiroshi becomes immersed in anatomizing her\, and begins to see otherworldly dreams that are inhabited by a woman named Ryoko (Tsukamoto Nami). A fellow classmate\, Ikumi (KIKI)\, is drawn to his intense ways and she pursues him with fevered fascination. Eventually\, Hiroshi asks his teacher (Kishibe Ittoku) to let him examine the cadaver on his own and as he pays loving attention to every millimeter of flesh\, the distinction between real and hallucinatory worlds becomes increasingly blurred. Then he discovers a tattoo on the corpse’s arm and recognizes it as belonging to the woman from his dreams who is actually the girlfriend he lost in the accident. Noriko Maeda Foundations is the culmination of a three-year project to capture the mature form of this vocabulary in the pages of a single book. \nThis exhibition displays the collection of original works prepared for the publication and explores the broad spectrum of expressive powers harnessed by the calligrapher. Unclaimed seats will be released 10 minutes before the event\, if possible.* \nJoin us for a reading and conversation with the internationally-acclaimed writer Yoko Tawada as we discuss language\, literature and crossing borders. The event will be moderated by Dr. Ted Goossen and PhD candidate\, Yasmin Aly. The two will interview Yoko Tawada and explore her creative writing process\, translation in literature and how meaning can change within a language\, and how it can be used to transcend borders. \nYoko Tawada was born in Tokyo and currently resides in Berlin. She writes in Japanese and German and has won numerous literary awards. Many of her works have been translated into English and other languages. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing. \nPanelist Bios: \nYoko Tawada\n \nYoko Tawada was born in Tokyo in 1960\, moved to Hamburg when she was twenty-two\, and then to Berlin in 2006. She writes in both Japanese and German\, and has published several books—stories\, novels\, poems\, plays\, essays—in both languages. She has received numerous awards for her writing including the Akutagawa Prize\, the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize\, the Tanizaki Prize\, the Kleist Prize\, and the Goethe Medal. New Directions publishes her story collections Where Europe Begins (with a Preface by Wim Wenders) and Facing the Bridge\, as well her novels The Naked Eye\, The Bridegroom Was a Dog\, Memoirs of a Polar Bear\, and The Emissary.                                                                                                                                                      [Author photo © Heike Steinweg]\n  \nTed Goossen \nTed Goossen (b. 1948) teaches Japanese literature and film at York University in Toronto. He is coeditor of Monkey Business International and the general editor of The Oxford Book of Japanese Short Stories\, and has published translations of stories and essays by Hiromi Kawakami\, Haruki Murakami\, Yōko Ogawa\, Sachiko Kishimoto and Naoya Shiga\, among others. \nYasmin Aly \nYasmin Aly is a researcher\, artist\, and educator invested in seeing international and local artists contribute to Toronto’s cultural landscape through critical and contextualized art that speaks to the condition of a racialized cultural existence. Born in Cairo and drawing on lived and labored experiences in Germany and Egypt\, she moved to Toronto to complete her PhD and further explore concepts of coloniality\, representation\, feminist activism\, and art. She is currently a doctoral student at the University of Toronto completing research Arab and Muslim representations in contemporary German film and literature. DESCRIPTION:SPIRIT OF JAPAN: SHINTO & GAGAKU\nJapanese Traditional Religion and Music\n(Introduction of Shinto and Gagaku performance) \nYou may think Japan is the country of Buddhism. In fact\, there are various Buddhist temples in Kyoto\, Nara and everywhere in Japan\, and the concept of “Zen” is also familiar. On the other hand\, quite many Japanese enjoy Christmas and Halloween\, and visit Shinto shrines from time to time. \nShinto is Japanese indigenous religion\, which does not have a founder\, dogmas and a holy scripture. However\, it has been kept as a part of Japanese life (custom) for more than a few thousand years\, and for example\, millions of people visit Meiji Jingu Shinto shrine in Tokyo for the New Year’s first shrine visit to make prayers. \n \nShinto priests of this Meiji Jingu will come to The Japan Foundation\, Toronto this September\, and have an introductory talk about Shinto\, the concept of the relation with nature as you can see the forest (picture) surrounding Meiji Jingu\, and the connection with the life of Japanese people. \nGagaku –traditional music- has an important role at Shinto ritual ceremonies. Slow and mellow music will lead you to feel Japanese culture rooted into the ancient times of the country. In this event\, some music will be performed by three musical instruments (Sho\, Hichiriki\, Ryuteki). Furthermore\, performers (Shinto priests) will give you instructions if you want to challenge/try to play it! \n  \n【日本語】 \n日本は仏教の国というイメージをお持ちの方も多いのではないかと思います。京都や奈良、日本全国には様々な寺院があり、禅という概念にも親しみがあります。一方で、クリスマスやハロウィンを楽しみ、正月には神社に参拝をします。 \n神道は日本古来の信仰で、創始者や教義・経典を持っていません。しかし、今日もなお日本人の生活の一部として残っており、例えば、東京にある明治神宮は正月の一週間で数百万人の参拝者で賑わいます。この明治神宮からやってきた神職が、神道について、そして広大な森に象徴される神道と自然との関わり、生活との関わりについて解説します。 \n  \n神道のお祭りには雅楽が欠かせません。ゆったりとした曲調は、遥か遠い昔に根付いている日本の文化を感じさせてくれます。このイベントの中では、三管（笙・篳篥・笛）という小編成で、数曲演奏される予定です。また、参加者の中から希望者には、この雅楽器に挑戦してもらう時間も設けられます。 \n  \nBio: \nMember: Moriyasu Ito\, Atsuki Katayama\, Takanaga Tsutsumi \nMoriyasu Ito graduated from Kyoto University and earned Bachelor of Law. He entered in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993 and studied at Trent University in Canada as a trainee\, and was posted to Karachi in Pakistan as a cultural attache and vice consul for three years. Back to Tokyo in 1999\, he left the ministry in 2003 and entered Meiji Jingu and became a Shinto priest after studying at Kokugakuin University. He is a Chief of the International relation division at Meiji Jingu Intercultural Research Institute. He plays the Sho (Japanese wind instrument assembling panpipes). \nAtsuki Katayama graduated from Kokugakuin University in 2003\, and entered Meiji Jingu in the same year. His father is serving at Hitomaro Jinja (Shinto shrine)\, dedicated to the spirit of a poetry Kakinomoto-no Hitomaro (A.D. 660-724)\, in Yamaguchi prefecture.  He became a Shinto priest in 2008 after serving as a trainee for 5 years at Meiji Jingu. Currently he belongs to the Ritual division. He plays Ryuteki (dragon flute). \nTakanaga Tsutsumi lives in the life close to Shinto\, since his mother was born in the family serving at Kumano-hongu Taisha (Shinto shrine) in Wakayama prefecture. After he studied low at Tokai University\, he decided to be a Shinto priest\, and entered Kokugakuin University to take one year intensive course for the qualification to be a priest. He has been serving at Meiji Jingu for three years as a trainee\, now. He plays the Hichiriki (small double-reed instrument).

SUMMARY:Harmony Between Morality and Business: The Philosophy of Shibusawa Eiichi
DESCRIPTION:Shibusawa Eiichi (1840-1931) is regarded as the father of Japanese capitalism. He founded nearly 500 enterprises and economic organizations\, most of which operate to this day. Equally dedicated to social and public welfare\, he launched 600 philanthropic programs in many areas\, including social welfare\, education\, and international exchange. His basic philosophy in the management of businesses was the harmony between morality and business. In recent years his thought has drawn increasing international attention for its ethical vision of capitalism as an alternative to the untrammeled profit-seeking and capital accumulation characteristic of contemporary market economies. His most famous work\, The Analects and the Abacus\, has been translated into Chinese nine times. This lecture will offer an overview of Shibusawa Eiichi’s thought\, its roots in Confucian ethics\, and its implications for 21st-century economic systems. \n\nAtsushi Moriya is a writer and a researcher. He is an expert in ancient Chinese thought and the thought of Shibusawa Eiichi\, and has translated Shibusawa Eiichi’s books into modern Japanese. SUMMARY:"Bring your own Bento" - Drop-in Lunchtime Language Lessons
DESCRIPTION:Have you been thinking about learning a new language but haven’t been able to find the time?\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto is happy to offer a monthly drop-in starter Japanese-language lesson series over the lunch hour! In these lessons\, we will introduce helpful words and expressions to get you started on the path to communicating in Japanese! \nSo if you are in the Yonge/Bloor area\, why not stop by and sample the Japan Foundation’s approach to teaching the Japanese language? And these lessons are B.Y.O.B. (“bring your own bento“)\, so please feel free to bring your lunch with you! \nLessons are held the second Wednesday of every month at 12:15 pm\, and run for approximately 30 minutes. \nUpcoming Schedule: (subject to change) \n\nJanuary 9: Winter in Japan ❄\nFebruary 13: Japanese for Valentines\nMarch 13: “Let’s go see the cherry blossoms!”\nApril 10: Topic TBD\n\n… with more to come! \nRegistration is not required\, but space is limited so please feel free to let us know you will be joining us using the form below! \nIf you have any questions\, please contact us at koza@jftor.org!
