DESCRIPTION:January 18 – April 13\, 2019\n\nLandmarks From Before It Was Called Tokyo:\nHiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo\n広重作江戸名所百景展\nCo-presented by Stuart Jackson Gallery & The Japan Foundation\, Toronto\n  \nOriginal print works of One Hundred Famous Views of Edo\, for short “Edo Hyaku (hundred)”\, by Hiroshige (1797-1858) for your view\, together with related works\, and contemporary hand-carved\, hand-printed reproductions to bring back the excitement and ambience of sophisticated urban life in Edo.  \n*UPDATE: Feb 6\, 2019  – Snow storm brought additional snow scenes to Hiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo exhibition. See bottom for details.\n“Edo Hyaku” of Urban Serenity \nOne Hundred Famous Views of Edo\, for short “Edo Hyaku (hundred)” by Hiroshige is a series of multi-coloured woodblock prints depicting the landmarks of Tokyo at the time the city was called Edo. \nHiroshige (1797-1858) was an ukiyo-e artist whose reputation was most strongly established in the genre of topographical prints. This direction towards landmark themes came to Hiroshige\, a late bloomer\, in 1831 when his artistic breakthrough\, Tōto Meisho or Famous Views of the Eastern Capital (Edo) print series was published. In 1833 Hiroshige’s popularity exploded when his series 53 Stations of Tōkaidō Highway appeared. \nAcross Japan many famous views became the subjects of Hiroshige’s print series\, but the city of Edo had a special place in his artistry. In volume alone\, Hiroshige created more than one thousand prints of the landscapes of Edo. Among all these books and prints of Edo by Hiroshige\, “Edo Hyaku” occupies an even more privileged position. \n \n“Edo Hyaku” is a summit of Hiroshige’s famous view prints. He himself had previously created many series of famous views\, as though they were the foothills supporting this magnificent peak. In “Edo Hyaku”\, which was created during the last two-and-a half years of Hiroshige’s life\, the artist made one last creative leap: Unlike his travelogue prints which had sense of humour and vitality\, the urban scenes in “Edo Hyaku” embrace poetic stillness and serenity along with new dramatic elements of composition. \nContemporary researchers say that “Edo Hyaku” had an intention of providing emotional relief from the disasters of that time — the Great Ansei Earthquake in 1855 and the Great Wind Storm in 1856. Hiroshige encouraged the citizens\, celebrated the recovery and restoration\, and mourned for the victims through his artworks. Having the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in a country deeply hurt by an earthquake in 2011\, Hiroshige’s generous\, affectionate glance to the city and its residents is more touching than ever. \nOriginal works from “Edo Hyaku”\, related works\, and contemporary hand-carved\, hand-printed reproductions bring back the excitement and ambience of sophisticated urban life in Edo. Nature and the seasons along with man-made structures were fully appreciated by Edo residents who made up a population of more than a million individuals. \nHiroshige’s farewell poem\n  \nAzumaji e Fude wo nokoshite Tabi no Sora \nNishi no Mikuni no Nadokoro wo min. \nI leave my brush in the East \nAnd set forth on my journey. \nI shall see the famous places \nin the Western Land. \n  \n(The Western Land in this context refers to the strip of land by the Tōkaidō between Kyoto and Edo\, \nbut it does double duty as a reference to the paradise of the Amida Buddha.) \n  \n*Just added February 6 \n \nNight View in Takanawa \nfrom Eight Snow Views of Eastern Capital series \nThis series of eight snow scenes had never been published in Hiroshige’s life time\, only the sketch remained Paris\, France. These works are considered as Hiroshige’s latest work\, at a same time with One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. First in 1928 the blocks were carved and printed. DESCRIPTION:JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers\nThe JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers is a study group where the participants play leading roles. \nDiscussion topics are decided on by participants on the spot. Participants are welcome to suggest topics related to any problems they may have or something they want to hear others’ opinions on\, etc. The goal is not to listen success stories\, but for participants to work together to solve problems. \nExamples of topics currently requested are:\n● Efficient kanji teaching methods for Chinese students\n● What do you do if students cannot remember hiragana or katakana at all?\n● Recruitment and retention\n● Separating kanji-ken and non-kanji-ken students\n● Examples of the Communicative Approach\, etc. \nWhoever suggests the topic decides what language it will be discussed in. SUMMARY:CONNECTION & CATASTROPHE: Media Theory and the Occult Film Boom in Japan
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1970s Japan was in the grip of an “occult boom” that exploded across popular media. This was a fad\, but also something more: A popular media theory that tried to come to terms with a new media ecology. The ripple effects could be felt for decades in pop culture\, politics\, and social movements. \nThis talk will outline the occult boom in film and track its roots in a new relationship to media. It will trace its route through media mix zombies\, the demise of the student movement and film producers’ conversations with UFOs. Focusing on two basic fantasies of a new kind of connectivity it will follow the logic of the occult film boom to its unexpected catastrophes. \nOn Thursday\, November 22\, Professor Zahlten will be in Montreal to give another talk supported by the Japan Foundation\, Toronto\, The Electric Ecology: Models of Connectivity in Japan’s Media Century\, at Concordia University. \nDuring October and November\, the Japan Foundation Toronto is hosting a film series\, DARK & OCCULT Films From Japan. Come get better acquainted with the subject of this talk by watching the occult films of 1970s & 1980s Japan. \n\nAlexander Zahlten is Associate Professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. His work centers on film and audiovisual culture in East Asia\, with a focus on Japan. His recent work touches on topics such as film’s transition from environment to ecology\, ‘amateur’ film and media production\, or the different modes of media theorization that media cultures produce. \nRecent publications include the co-edited volume Media Theory in Japan (Duke University Press\, 2017\, with Marc Steinberg) and his monograph The End of Japanese Cinema: Industrial Genres\, National Times\, and Media Ecologies (Duke University Press\, 2017)\, which maps the transformations of the film industry in Japan from the 1960s – 2000s. \nAmong others he has curated film programs at the German Film Museum or the Japan Society New York. He was Program Director for the Nippon Connection Film Festival\, the largest festival for film from Japan\, from 2002 to 2010.

The films are in conjunction with a special lecture by Japanese film scholar Professor Alex Zahlten in November. Prof. Zahlten will discuss some basic shifts in the relationship to media / the media environment that transpired in Japan during this shifting bubble era. Some viewers may find the films disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised. \nA huge earthquake in the Pacific ocean sends a gigantic tidal wave rushing towards Japan. Panic ensues as the desperate civilians flee the coastal areas. Volcanic eruptions and and firestorms burn cities to the ground. A weather research group discovers that Japan is moving towards the Japanese trench\, which would bring the entire country under the ocean. Viewer discretion is advised. \nAn action thriller with distinctive artistic beauty\, portraying a nightmare detective who unravels the mystery of murder cases with his special ability to enter into other people’s dreams.\nGhastly\, locked-room murders happen one after another. Victims are all would-be suicides who have died as a result of blood loss from cutting their own bodies. They all seem to have been killed while being troubled with a nightmare after talking to a man called “Zero” on the phone. Detective Keiko Kirishima (Hitomi) suspects the incidents are somehow linked with the nightmare. She requests the cooperation of the nightmare detective Kyoichi (Matsuda Ryuhei). Frustrated with his adamant refusal to cooperate\, Detective Wakamiya (ANDO Masanobu) makes contact with Zero\, who has the ability to go into other people’s dreams and kill them. Danger befalls the Detective. Kyoichi finally makes a move to save Wakamiya\, but is unable to save him from being murdered. Deploring her colleague’s death\, Kirishima also decides to confront Zero. She narrowly escapes death thanks to Kyoichi\, and they succeed in tracking down the murderer.\nDirected by Tsukamoto Shinya of A Snake of June (Rokugatsu no Hebi). DESCRIPTION:Sayaka Murata has a very important question that she asks in all of her work: What is normal? And how does normal become normal? Her first novel to appear in English\, Convenience Store Woman\, is no exception to this line of thematic inquiry. In this conversation\, her first appearance in North America\, Murata will discuss with Jocelyne Allen how her questions about social norms inform her work\, from her writing process and early influences\, the treatment of women in Japanese society\, to her own years of working in convenience stores. Murata will also read from her award-winning novel and talk about the convenience store in Japan\, its place in Japanese society\, and how it differs from convenience stores in Canada. \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto and TIFA (Toronto International Festival of Authors) look forward to hosting award-winning author Sayaka Murata. \nFor books by Sayaka Murata available in the Japan Foundation\, Toronto library\, click here. \n\nSayaka Murata was born and raised in Chiba\, Japan (just east of Tokyo)\, and then attended Tamagawa University on the western edge of Tokyo. She is known for exploring nonconformity in society for men and women\, particularly with regard to gender roles\, parenthood\, and sex. Throughout her writing career Murata has worked as a part-time convenience store clerk in Tokyo and draws much of her inspiration from her observations of everyday life in there. \nMurata received the  Gunzo Prize for New Writers for her first novel\, Jyunyū (Breastfeeding) in 2003\, the Mishima Yukio Prize for Shiro-iro no machi no\, sono hone no taion no (Of Bones\, Of Body Heat\, of Whitening City) in 2013\, the Noma Literary New Face Prize for Gin-iro no Uta (Silver Song) in 2009\, and the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 2016 for Konbini ningen (Convenience Store Woman) which became her first book to be translated into English in 2018. \nJocelyne Allen is a Japanese translator\, interpreter\, and writer based out of Toronto\, Canada\, after a decade in Japan. During her time in the Land of the Rising Sun\, she worked as a magazine columnist\, interpreted for foreign correspondents\, and toured with a Japanese drum group. During her career as a professional translator of creative and pop culture works\, she has translated a large number of short stories\, novels\, and manga\, including the Eisner Award winning Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths. As an interpreter\, she has worked with many of Japan’s most celebrated manga artists and authors\, including Taiyo Matsumoto\, Aya Kanno\, and Hideo Furukawa. She is also the author of the novel You and the Pirates. \n\nMs. Murata will also be part of the Festival Pop-up at Union Station between 12:00pm and 2:00pm on Saturday\, October 27\, as well as participating in a panel at Harbourfront Centre on Saturday\, October 27 at 4:00pm. \nAfter her appearances in Toronto\, Ms. Murata will head to the United States for events in Iowa and New York. Viewer discretion is advised. \nHiroshi (Asano Tadanobu) is involved in a car accident that causes him to lose his memory\, and develops an obsessive interest in medical books. He subsequently enrolls in medical school and in a dissection class\, his group is assigned the body of a young woman. Hiroshi becomes immersed in anatomizing her\, and begins to see otherworldly dreams that are inhabited by a woman named Ryoko (Tsukamoto Nami). A fellow classmate\, Ikumi (KIKI)\, is drawn to his intense ways and she pursues him with fevered fascination. Eventually\, Hiroshi asks his teacher (Kishibe Ittoku) to let him examine the cadaver on his own and as he pays loving attention to every millimeter of flesh\, the distinction between real and hallucinatory worlds becomes increasingly blurred. Then he discovers a tattoo on the corpse’s arm and recognizes it as belonging to the woman from his dreams who is actually the girlfriend he lost in the accident. Although highly regarded outside of Japan\, the inner pulse of this art form is often perceived as an unfathomable mystery. \nFor years\, Noriko Maeda’s exhibitions and classes have introduced Canadian audiences to the heartbeat of calligraphy. Her speeches and works have nurtured a vocabulary for expounding the essence of her art. Noriko Maeda Foundations is the culmination of a three-year project to capture the mature form of this vocabulary in the pages of a single book. \nThis exhibition displays the collection of original works prepared for the publication and explores the broad spectrum of expressive powers harnessed by the calligrapher.
