Yet\, it appears that teachers do not know much about the other institutions\, courses or programmes. This lack of understanding can sometimes be found even within the same institution. We believe that it is very important and necessary for teachers to know what their current students have previously studied and in what type of environment that education took place. Similarly\, it is important to be informed of the available learning opportunities for students who wish to continue studying Japanese.  We believe it is essential for teachers to build a strong and active network that enables them to communicate with one another. SUMMARY:Takashi Hiraide Author's Talk: The life of a book....somewhere between the Cat and the Walnut.
DESCRIPTION:Takashi Hiraide\, celebrated author and book designer\, will discuss his literary and artistic practice in relation to his published works and ongoing mail art experiment.  Hiraide contemplates the life of what we consider to be a “book” and its origins in the form of diaries and letters. Hiraide is involved in the complete process of bringing a book to life\, including the book-binding\, design and in some cases\, even the shipping to an individual reader\, as exhibited within “Takashi Hiraide —- Airpost Poetry Book Design for One from One.” His modern art influences and book design will be explored in relation to the current exhibition. The interplay of different literary forms and genres is a constant throughout Hiraide’s body of work. Mikiko Sasaki’s documentary finds Sasuke at a turning point in his career\, considering a return to politics (he once served as the first masked member of the Iwate Prefectural Diet) and dealing with the effects on his body of 20 years in the ring. SUMMARY:Luncheon Seminar: Abenomics: Has it Worked? Will it Fail?
DESCRIPTION:The Japan Society and The Japan Foundation\, Toronto are honoured and privileged to co-present a luncheon seminar with French scholar Professor Sébastien Lechevalier. He is a professor at EHESS (L’École des hautes etudes en sciences socials/The School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences)\, president of the France-Japan Foundation of EHESS\, director of the French Network for Asian Studies\, and a recipient of a Japan Foundation fellowship. His recent publications include The Great Transformation of Japanese Capitalism (Science-Po 2011\, Routledge\, 2014\, Iwanami Shoten\, 2015). Professor Lechevalier has been invited to speak by various organizations including Japanese business associations and the foreign chamber of commerce in Japan. \nWhat assessment can be made of Abenomics three years after their initial implementation and midway through the mandate of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe? Fears that they would give rise to an inflationary spiral or a sovereign and banking crisis did not materialize. At the same time\, despite encouraging results in terms of inflation\, growth outcomes remain disappointing. The continued concerted use of different levers of economic policy is needed to consolidate the exit from deflation and to strengthen growth. \nBeyond the most recent period\, Abenomics is hard to understand without reference to Japan’s economic history since the bursting of the real estate and financial bubble. What are the lessons of Japan’s “lost decades”?\n\nThe Japanese experience over the past twenty-five years provides useful benchmarks to understand the risks to North America and Europe of protracted slower growth\, or the effects of quantitative easing policies implemented in Japan over fifteen years. DESCRIPTION:TAKASHI HIRAIDE—-AIRPOST POETRY\nBOOK DESIGN FOR ONE FROM ONE \nOctober 4 – November 5\, 2016\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n《TH_AIRPOST》is  an “Aerial Post Office” utilized by the Minimum Press which was created by Hiraide in relationship with the postal system. The author writes\, creates the layout\, prints\, formats and does the bookbinding by himself. The literary work that is created in this way is accessed through an intermediary post office located on the web and ultimately delivered to the individual mailboxes of readers worldwide. \nThere is a “Book” that is both a letter and an objet d’art or a “Poem” that is both a postcard and a greeting\, and these create a unique one-to-one relationship\, a bridge between the reader and the author. In the same way that various life forms exist in relationship with the environment while adapting their forms to others\, the creation of the singular experience of the book unfolds. \nThe《AIRPOST POETRY》exhibit is the first time that an overview of this experiment 《FOR ONE FROM ONE》has been presented. \n\nTakashi Hiraide is a poet\, critic and book designer. He has published books of various genres and forms from poetry to prose and from poetics of sports to criticism on arts\, receiving numerous prizes. Kenzaburo Oe\, Nobel Prize-winning novelist\, highly praised Hiraide’s writings for providing a new direction for prose within the field of poetry. His first novel\, The Guest Cat\, became a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller in 2014. \n

This course places its focus on speaking\, and over three weeks in July/August students will gain the knowledge and skills to start talking about themselves and their world in Japanese. \nAnd not only will students learn to speak in Japanese\, they will also put it to use outside of the classroom with a trip to a local Japanese restaurant! \nRegistration for this class is now full. We thank everyone for their interest.\nCourse Content & Schedule:\nThis course runs Tuesday and Thursday nights for three weeks in July/August\, and includes 5 classes and 1 night out! Dashi is the bedrock of Japanese cuisine. Deceptively simple\, master chefs have jealously guarded its secrets for centuries. Its development came about as a result of a historical event that triggered a “food revolution”: Buddhism arrived in Japan 1500 years ago\, prohibiting the consumption of meat. The Japanese quickly sought other sources of umami taste and found it in dashi. \nSaturday\, July 23 and Saturday\, August 6: 1:00 pm SEMINAR ROOM \n\nJapan\, Man and Nature in Harmony: Shoyu and the Secrets of Japanese Cuisine\n2014\, 49 minutes\, English and Japanese with English subtitles \nThe Japanese discovered that a humble mould spore could transform soya beans into shoyu\, the soy sauce that is a pillar of Japanese cuisine. Sprinkle it on rice and the rice changes into sake… This mould is a tiny organism called Aspergillus oryzae and mysteriously\, it exists only in Japan! We travel to the imperial city of Kyoto\, where the ancient craft of brewing shoyu is preserved. This delicate process begins in spring and requires a whole year to mature the soy sauce. The shoyu brewer knows it is all a question of balance and harmony…\n\nSaturday\, July 23 and Saturday\, August 6: 2:00 pm SEMINAR ROOM \n\nGrandma’s Eternal Forest\n2012\, 49 minutes\, English and Japanese with English subtitles \nGrandma Kuniko Shiiba\, aged 87\, is an amazing lady: she is the last person in Japan who continues to practice a traditional and sustainable form of slash-and-burn agriculture that dates back more than 4000 years. After clearing a section of her forest\, she grows four successive yearly crops of buckwheat\, Japanese millet\, adzuki beans and soybeans\, then lets forest grow wild again for 26 years before starting a new crop cycle. DESCRIPTION:Organized by: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nThe initial clash of ceramic artist Julia Nema’s predominantly Constructivist and Bauhaus background with the immediacy\, naked materiality and natural imperfection of Japanese aesthetics led her to embark on a long adventure in search of parallel values bridging distant traditions and processes. \nIn this talk\, Prof. Nema will offer both theoretical and practical insights into how she has worked for years to translate the inspiration found in Japanese yakishime ceramics through her own artistic thinking and creation. She will make reference to the rich material on show in the current gallery exhibition Yakishime: Earth Metamorphosis\, as well as her own artworks\, products and findings from her book Fired up High: Approaches to Wood-fired Ceramics. \nFollowing the talk\, Prof. Nema will participate in a discussion on her work and inspiration with Toronto-based ceramic artists Chari Cohen and Chiho Tokita. \n  \n\n  \nAbout the speaker: \nJulia Nema is a ceramic artist\, designer and painter based in Budapest\, Hungary. Her studio is the only ceramic workshop in Hungary using a high-temperature\, wood-fired kiln for production. She creates mainly tableware\, architectural and fine art works\, and has received numerous commissions from exclusive restaurants for bespoke tableware. She has been awarded the Ferenczy Noemi Award and the Hungarian Design Award. She has been featured in international publications related to ceramics\, including F. Olsen’s The Kiln Book (2011)\, and is author of the first and only book on wood-fired ceramics to be published in Hungary. She holds a PhD in Liberal Arts from Moholy–Nagy University of Art and Design. SUMMARY:The Taste of Clay - Ceramic artist Julia Nema on the beauty of yakishime
DESCRIPTION:Organized by: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nAfter her first visit in 2005 to a yakishime-style ceramics manufacturing centre in northern Japan\, ceramic artist Julia Nema returned to Japan as a Japan Foundation Fellow in 2013 on an extensive study trip to various kiln sites\, artists’ studios and major ceramics collections. \nIn her lecture\, Prof. Nema will help us discover\, understand and appreciate the unique beauty born from the direct interaction of pure\, unglazed clay and fire– the subject of the current exhibition Yakishime: Earth Metamorphosis. The story of how Julia Nema’s artistic approach was unpredictably transformed by the elemental power and rich traditions of yakishime will be illustrated through photographs and personal accounts of her own experiences and encounters. \nFollowing her talk\, Prof. Nema will offer a guided tour of the exhibition\, reading and “tasting” the pieces from the perspective of a passionate wood-fire artist. \n\n  \nAbout the speaker: \nJulia Nema is a ceramic artist\, designer and painter based in Budapest\, Hungary. Yet\, it appears that teachers do not know much about the other institutions\, courses or programmes. This lack of understanding can sometimes be found even within the same institution. We believe that it is very important and necessary for teachers to know what their current students have previously studied and in what type of environment that education took place. Similarly\, it is important to be informed of the available learning opportunities for students who wish to continue studying Japanese.  We believe it is essential for teachers to build a strong and active network that enables them to communicate with one another. Since December 2009\, the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nIn the 21st event of the series\, we will visit Toronto Japanese Language School\, and observe one of three individual Japanese classes. \nDate: Saturday\, June 4\, 2016\nPlace: Toronto Japanese Language School (Orde Street Public School\, 18 Orde Street\, Toronto)\nTime: 10:25 AM (Tentative)\n★Participants will be notified of the meeting place and time via email. \nSchedule (Tentative):  \n\nJapanese class observation: 10:45 AM – 11:50 AM (5 spots in each class\, participants observe 1 class)\n\nClass 1: Children’s class Grade 2 – Grade 7 mix class\nClass 2: Adult class Level 2 (textbook: Genki 1 latter part)\nClass 3: Adult class Level 5 & 6 (Cultural Study class: presentation by a volunteer teacher and discussion with students)\n\n\nAfter the class observation: A discussion with teachers and Q&A/Lunch (participants pay out-of-pocket)\n\nRegistration Deadline: Wednesday\, June 1\, 2016 or when all 5 spots are filled.\nRegistration: mandatory \n* Due to the nature of the event\, the number of participants is limited.
