DESCRIPTION:Understanding the Dynamics of Aging\, Depopulation and Well-Being in Rural Japan\nA talk by Dr. Peter Matanle\, University of Sheffield\nSince at least the 1950s\, rural Japan has been slowly but steadily aging and depopulating. Youth migration to urban areas and chronically low fertility have caused many communities to disappear and left many others on the verge of doing so. These ‘genkai shuraku’\, or ‘marginal communities’ are increasing in number and size as Japan ages and depopulates\, and urbanization processes continue. \nThis lecture will tell the story of those demographic changes and examine the consequences for Japan and other Asian countries. What are the impacts that this has on the quality of individual\, family and community life? How do these rural communities deal with these changes? Professor Matanle argues that these changes offer Japan and other countries an opportunity to chart a new post-growth future. \nAbout the Speaker:\nDr Peter Matanle is Senior Lecturer in Japanese Studies and Director of Research and Innovation at the University of Sheffield’s School of East Asian Studies. His research is focused on the social and cultural geography of East Asia. He has published widely on regional population and development in Japan\, and the theory and practice of lifetime employment in Japanese organisations. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with “Japanese Design Today 100”exhibition\n1:00 pm Curator’s talk by Hiroshi Kashiwagi\n3:30 pm Designer/Architect’s talk by Yoshifumi Nakamura\nProf. Hiroshi Kashiwagi (Musashino Art University) and architect/furniture designer\, Mr. Yoshifumi Nakamura\, are visiting Toronto to give lectures to Canadian audiences. Hiroshi Kashiwagi and Yoshifumi Nakamura are both creative colleagues and friends. In fact\, between the years 1998-2000\, Mr. Nakamura designed Prof. Kashiwagi’s private residence. \nThe Japanese Design Today 100 exhibition opened on August 6 and will be on display until October 30\, 2014 in Toronto\, followed by a run in Montreal starting on November 19. \n100 items\, from a bullet train to an at-home mini planetarium\, were chosen by Prof. Kashiwagi\, and are enchanting visitors in Toronto right now. In the lecture\, we will have a quick visit to this exhibition via a Power Point presentation. Then\, Prof. Kashiwagi will describe an overall\, bird’s eye view of Japanese contemporary design\, rooted in the modernization projects of the 1920s. Jesper Wachtmeister\n2006\, 53 min. \nKOCHUU is a visually stunning film about modern Japanese architecture\, its roots in the Japanese tradition\, and its impact on the Nordic building tradition. Winding its way through visions of the future and traditional concepts\, nature and concrete\, gardens and high-tech spaces\, the film explains how contemporary Japanese architects strive to unite the ways of modern man with the old philosophies in astounding constructions. \nKOCHUU\, which translates as “in the jar\,” refers to the Japanese tradition of constructing small\, enclosed physical spaces\, which create the impression of a separate universe. The film illustrates key components of traditional Japanese architecture\, such as reducing the distinction between outdoors and indoors\, disrupting the symmetrical\, building with wooden posts and beams rather than with walls\, modular construction techniques\, and its symbiotic relationship with water\, light and nature. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Japan Foundation during Culture Days for special opening hours\, gallery tours of Japanese Design Today 100 and Awaodori dance performances in the library\n \nFounded in 2009\, Culture Days is a non-profit organization dedicated to building a national network of cultural connections devoted to providing Canadians with opportunities to participate in\, and appreciate\, all forms of arts and culture. SUMMARY:The Nikkei and the LARA Postwar Relief Efforts to Japan
DESCRIPTION:A Talk by Professor Masako Iino\, Tsuda College\nAfter the Pacific War ended in 1945\, a relief agency called Lara (Licensed Agencies for Relief in Asia) was formed. Between 1946 and 1952\, twenty percent of the relief supplies sent to Japan by LARA were collected by Nikkei in Canada\, the U.S.\, and South America. This talk will examine this period of rebuilding and compare the situation of Nikkei communities in these three diverse regions. \nAbout the Speaker:\nMasako Iino is past President and Professor of American History and Immigration Studies at Tsuda College in Tokyo. She has also taught at McGill University and Acadia University and was a visiting professor at UC Berkeley. She was a member of the Executive Committee of the Japanese Association for American Studies\, President of the Japanese Association for Canadian Studies\, and was awarded with the Governor General’s International Award for Canadian Studies in 2001. \n

SUMMARY:Library Services in Aging Japan
DESCRIPTION:A Talk by Professor Chieko Mizoue\, University of Tsukuba\nIn Japan\, one in every four individuals is over 65 years of age\, and one in eight is over 75 years of age. This presents challenges to  all levels of government and service organizations as they must adapt their infrastructure and service offerings to accommodate an aging population. We explore these new services as they relate to library service in Japan. We will utilize the results of recent government surveys and case studies\, such as those done at the Izumo City Hikawa Library and the Akita Prefectural Library in Japan. We will look at how new library services are being designed to enhance the lives of elderly citizens\, engaging them in the development and maintenance of their own communities. \nThe JFT library will be open before the event from 5:30 to 6:30. \nAbout the Speaker:\nChieko Mizoue is a Professor in the Faculty of Library\, Information and Media Science at the University of Tsukuba. Her research looks at policy of higher education and policy of culture. With regards to the policy of higher education\, she is interested in adult learning and distance learning in post-secondary education in Japan and North America. On culture policy\, she is currently studying the relationship between multiculturalism and libraries and museums in North America.

DESCRIPTION:Dir. Yasujiro Ozu\, 1961\, 103 min.\nThe Kohayagawa family\, proprietors of a small sake brewery\, are struggling to keep their business afloat while their elderly patriarch\, Manbei (Ganjiro Nakamura)\, gads about with a former girlfriend\, much to his daughters’ disapproval. Meanwhile\, the clock is ticking for widowed daughter-in-law Akiko (Setsuko Hara) and the youngest Kohayakawa daughter Noriko (Yoko Tsukasa) to be married off. “The Kohayagawa family is complicated indeed\,” muses one of the brewery’s employees\, as he attempts to detangle the many origins and back stories of this lively clan. \nA domestic comedy/drama that captures an era of rapid change for an extended family\, The End of Summer has a bittersweet but optimistic tone\, deepened by subtle and affecting performances by a cast of Ozu all-stars (Chishu Ryu even makes an appearance!). \n

It combines superbly designed products of recent years with a group of modern designs from the 1950s through the 1990s that had a significant influence on the design of today. \nThe design of household products acts as a mirror\, reflecting the life of our society and the personal lifestyles of individuals. These designs give a vivid picture of the hopes and dreams of the people who use the products as well as the designers and corporations who create them. DESCRIPTION:“New Japanese class\, students to write Japanese newspaper”\nWhy not do something fun with your Japanese this summer?\nFor late intermediate students of Japanese what better way to meet other learners at your level\,  practice your Japanese\, and sharpen your writing skills than coming together to create a newspaper in Japanese! \nOver this 5 week course students will begin by reading newspaper articles and learning how they are structured before separating into small groups to begin working on their own articles. This series is offered on Tuesdays from 6:30pm-8:30pm. There is no class on August 8th\, but students will be given tasks and expected to complete them for the following week. \nWeek 1 (07/22): Structure of a newspaper\, reading newspapers in Japanese\nWeek 2 (07/29): Reading newspaper articles\, form groups\nWeek 3 (08/05): No formal class\, work with group on article\nWeek 4 (08/12): In class time to work on article\nWeek 5 (08/19): Presentation of finished newspaper \nClick here for registration \n*A course fee of $20 covers the cost of materials used during the course. DESCRIPTION:Join us once again for our “Talk about Japan” series of classes for intermediate/advanced Japanese language learners\, this time with the theme of sports journalism. \nThe first week of this two week class features a lecture by Japanese sports journalist Yoshie Noguchi who currently writes on figure skating. Working from this talk\, in the second week students will learn words and phrases which they can then use to discuss journalism as well as voice their opinions about journalism in Japanese. \nWeek 1 (07/25): Lecture on journalism by Yoshie Noguchi\nWeek 2 (08/01): Japanese lesson based on the contents of the previous lecture \nThis lecture is recommended for those with intermediate (JLPT N3) Japanese Skills or above. Those wishing to challenge themselves are also welcome to attend but will be subject to a screening process.
