SUMMARY:Library Services in Aging Japan
DESCRIPTION:A Talk by Professor Chieko Mizoue\, University of Tsukuba\nIn Japan\, one in every four individuals is over 65 years of age\, and one in eight is over 75 years of age. This presents challenges to  all levels of government and service organizations as they must adapt their infrastructure and service offerings to accommodate an aging population. We explore these new services as they relate to library service in Japan. We will utilize the results of recent government surveys and case studies\, such as those done at the Izumo City Hikawa Library and the Akita Prefectural Library in Japan. We will look at how new library services are being designed to enhance the lives of elderly citizens\, engaging them in the development and maintenance of their own communities. \nThe JFT library will be open before the event from 5:30 to 6:30. \nAbout the Speaker:\nChieko Mizoue is a Professor in the Faculty of Library\, Information and Media Science at the University of Tsukuba. Her research looks at policy of higher education and policy of culture. With regards to the policy of higher education\, she is interested in adult learning and distance learning in post-secondary education in Japan and North America. On culture policy\, she is currently studying the relationship between multiculturalism and libraries and museums in North America.

Yasujiro Ozu\, 1961\, 103 min.\nThe Kohayagawa family\, proprietors of a small sake brewery\, are struggling to keep their business afloat while their elderly patriarch\, Manbei (Ganjiro Nakamura)\, gads about with a former girlfriend\, much to his daughters’ disapproval. Meanwhile\, the clock is ticking for widowed daughter-in-law Akiko (Setsuko Hara) and the youngest Kohayakawa daughter Noriko (Yoko Tsukasa) to be married off. “The Kohayagawa family is complicated indeed\,” muses one of the brewery’s employees\, as he attempts to detangle the many origins and back stories of this lively clan. \nA domestic comedy/drama that captures an era of rapid change for an extended family\, The End of Summer has a bittersweet but optimistic tone\, deepened by subtle and affecting performances by a cast of Ozu all-stars (Chishu Ryu even makes an appearance!). \n

This series is offered on Tuesdays from 6:30pm-8:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Join us once again for our “Talk about Japan” series of classes for intermediate/advanced Japanese language learners\, this time with the theme of sports journalism. \nThe first week of this two week class features a lecture by Japanese sports journalist Yoshie Noguchi who currently writes on figure skating. Working from this talk\, in the second week students will learn words and phrases which they can then use to discuss journalism as well as voice their opinions about journalism in Japanese. \nWeek 1 (07/25): Lecture on journalism by Yoshie Noguchi\nWeek 2 (08/01): Japanese lesson based on the contents of the previous lecture \nThis lecture is recommended for those with intermediate (JLPT N3) Japanese Skills or above. Currently she is at work on an MA in English and American Literature at the University of Bamberg.

When the samurai\, Yasube\, saves her child from a traffic accident\, she invites him to stay at their house until he gets his bearings. Despite his  conservative views on traditional gender roles\, he quickly adapts to a new role as a caregiver and homemaker while Hiroko works full time. However\, when he discovers an unexpected talent for pastry making that puts him in the spotlight\, their domestic arrangement is disrupted and the nature of their relationship is thrown into doubt. \n2010\, 108 minutes\, in Japanese with English subtitles\nStarring: Ryo Nishikido\, Rie Tomosaka\, Fuku Suzuki\n  \n\n  \nYoshihiro Nakamura \nYoshihiro Nakamura\, guest of honour at the 2014 Toronto Japanese Film Festival\, has had a diverse and fascinating career as a writer and director. His screenwriting credits include the J-Horror classic Dark Water (2002) and the indie prison comedy-drama Doing Time (2002). Yet\, it appears that teachers do not know much about the other institutions\, courses or programmes. This lack of understanding can sometimes be found even within the same institution. We believe that it is very important and necessary for teachers to know what their current students have previously studied and in what type of environment that education took place. Similarly\, it is important to be informed of the available learning opportunities for students who wish to continue studying Japanese. We believe it is essential for teachers to build a strong and active network that enables them to communicate with one another. Since December 2009\, the Ontario Chapter (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nFor the 15th event of this series\, we will have an introduction on the Japanese language classes at Toronto’s A.Y. DESCRIPTION:Challenges and Celebrations in Toronto and Japan\nA talk by Prof. Sayaka Fujii\, Tsukuba University\nIntroduced by Prof. André Sorensen\, University of Toronto\nNEW June 12\, 2014: lecture slides available for download (pdf) \nSince 2005\, there has been a large-scale revitalization project underway in Toronto’s Regent Park neighbourhood. Both criticized and celebrated\, the revitalization project has faced questions such as: how can we revitalize rather than gentrify the area\, how do we relocate residents during construction but not cut them off from their support networks\, and how do we increase the neighbourhood’s livability? \nLike Regent Park\, there are numerous public housing estates in Japan\, built after the war to meet significant housing shortages in metropolitan areas. In 1954\, the Japan Housing Corporation\, a nation-wide public housing and urban development corporation\, was established to build public housing. \nRegent Park\, Toronto \nThough popular when built\, much of this housing has become outdated over time. With new standards in design and planning and Japanese public housing in need of renewal\, today’s Urban Renaissance Agency has been working on several interesting revitalization projects\, demonstrating some creative attempts to engage and empower the resident community. In this talk\, we will explore some of these projects and look at ways that Toronto’s own revitalization can share from the lessons learned in Japan. \nThe talk will be introduced by André Sorensen\, Professor and Chair of the Department of Human Geography at the University of Toronto Scarborough. \nReservations are now closed. Her research interests include planning and management of housing estates by community associations\, planning for aging communities and revitalization of public housing. While in Toronto\, she has been researching the Regent Park revitalization project. \nProfessor Fujii holds a BA in Planning and Management Sciences and a M.A. in Environmental Science from the University of Tsukuba and a Ph.D. in Urban Engineering from the University of Tokyo. She teaches Urban Planning\, Land Use Planning and Urban Studio at the University of Tsukuba. \n  \n  \n  \nAndre Sorenson \nAndré Sorensen is Professor and Chair of the Department of Human Geography at the University of Toronto Scarborough. He has published extensively on Japanese urbanisation\, urban planning\, and planning history. His monograph ‘The Making of Urban Japan: Cities and Planning from Edo to the 21st Century’ (Routledge 2002) won the book prize of the International Planning History Association in 2004. In 2007 he was elected a Fellow of the University of Tokyo School of Engineering in recognition of his research on Japanese urbanism and urban planning. \nHis current research examines institutions\, urban space\, and temporal processes in urbanisation and urban governance from a historical institutionalist perspective\, with a focus on urban land and property development\, infrastructure management\, and the creation of increasingly differentiated property rights in urban settings. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Slide lecture and paper thread-making demonstration by Hiroko Karuno
DESCRIPTION:Hiroko Karuno\, author of the recently published book Kigami and Kami-ito: Japanese Handmade Paper and Thread\, presents a slide lecture on the process of Japanese hand papermaking  and the traditional uses of this paper in Japan. She will then demonstrate how to transform it into thread suitable for weaving into a wearable textile called shifu which has a long history in Japanese culture. This uniquely detailed method will be presented step-by-step\, as it is documented in the book. There will also be an opportunity to see examples of cloth made by the author from handmade paper thread. \nHiroko Karuno is an expert spinner\, weaver\, and dyer who has exhibited her shifu and taught numerous workshops in Japan and in Canada. In 2010 she created a special installation of shifu in Nara\, Japan\, in celebration of the 1300th anniversary of the city’s establishment as the capital.
