SUMMARY:Lecture and Screening: The Transpacific Field of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Professor Sayuri Guthrie Shimizu (Rice University) & screening of Sleeping Tigers\n“Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball.” This oft-quoted observation about baseball’s special place in American culture and society by Jacque Barzun applies to other regions of the world where baseball took hold in the 19th century and remained popular ever since\, such as Japan. This presentation illuminates baseball’s remarkable odyssey across the Pacific to become one of the most beloved ‘imported’ traditions in Japan and areas where it left its cultural footprints. \nWho brought baseball to Japan and why\, and how\, did the sport endear itself to the local people\, both as athletic practice and spectator sport? What does the story of baseball diffusion across the Pacific tell us about North America’s place in the world at the time? What is Canada’s place in the “Transpacific Field of Dreams”? How has the sport\, as a cultural import\, evolved in a new environment? These are some of the questions that will be explored in this braided story about baseball\, national identities\, and cultural diffusion. \nThis event will include a screening of the National Film Board documentary on the Vancouver Asahi\, Sleeping Tigers (50 minutes). \nProf. Guthrie Shimizu will also speak at Renison University College in Waterloo on Tuesday\, December 2\, 1:30 pm.\ndetails \nAbout the Speaker:\nSayuri Guthrie Shimizu is a historian of the United States’ relations with the wider world\, with a particular emphasis on US-East Asian relations since the mid-19th century. Her research interests\, cutting across historiographical and national boundaries\, include the history of U.S.-Japanese relations\, comparative colonialism\, the transpacific world\, sports in international relations\, and global governance. She is the author of Transpacific Field of Dreams: How Baseball Linked the United States and Japan in Peace and War (University of North Carolina Press\, 2012). Her current book project examines the rise and transformation of international ocean resource management regimes in the North Pacific in the first half of the 20th century. Professor Shimizu received her PhD in American History from Cornell University in 1992.\nAbout the Film:\nSleeping Tigers tells the story of the unbeatable Asahi baseball team in pre-World War II Vancouver. The team won the Pacific Northwest Championship for five straight years. This remarkable story is told with a combination of archival footage\, interviews and dramatic re-enactments.

SUMMARY:Continuing Learning Japanese 17: A. Y. Jackson Secondary School Class Observation
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \nContinuing Learning Japanese XVII \nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (Ontario Chapter)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Yet\, it appears that teachers do not know much about the other institutions\, courses or programmes. This lack of understanding can sometimes be found even within the same institution. We believe that it is very important and necessary for teachers to know what their current students have previously studied and in what type of environment that education took place. Similarly\, it is important to be informed of the available learning opportunities for students who wish to continue studying Japanese. We believe it is essential for teachers to build a strong and active network that enables them to communicate with one another. Since December 2009\, the Ontario Chapter (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nIn the seventeenth event of the series\, we will visit A. Y. Jackson Secondary School (introduced in Continuing Learning Japanese 15)\, and observe one of Mr. Takada’s Japanese classes. \nDate: Wednesday\, December 3\, 2014\n Place: A.Y. Jackson Secondary School (50 Francine Dr\, North York\, ON M2H 2G6)\n Time: 10:00 AM (Tentative)\n ★Participants will be notified of the meeting place and time via email.\n Schedule (Tentative): Japanese class observation: 10:20AM-11:35AM A discussion and Q&A will follow\, expected to end around 12:30 PM. \nPlease scroll to the bottom for registration\n* Due to the nature of the event\, the number of participants is limited. We may have to limit the number of participants from the same organization.\n* Feel free to contact the following if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Japanese Movies at the Bloor: Akko-chan: The Movie
DESCRIPTION:Akko-chan: The Movie\nDir. Yasuhiro Kawamura\, 2012\, 120 min.\nAkko-chan: The Movie is based on Fujio Akatsuka’s classic “magical girl” manga Himitsu no Akko-chan\, which has been broadcast as an animated TV series three times in the past. To mark the comic’s 50th anniversary\, has been adapted into a live-action movie for the first time. \nBy gazing into an enchanted compact\, given to her by the Spirit of Mirrors\, and chanting the magic words tekumakumayakon\, ten-year-old Akko  can transform into anything she wants. The live-action movie gives the story a modern twist\, while allowing the spirit of the original work to shine through. \nWhen Akko transforms into her 22-year-old self\, a chance meeting with Naoto\, a manager at a cosmetics company\, lands her a part-time job. Naoto’s section is about to be shut down\, so Akko earnestly  does her very best to help him\, coming up with childlike ideas and making the most of her magical transforming ability. Lead actress Haruka Ayase vibrantly inhabits this difficult role\, creating a relatable heroine by peppering the film with schoolgirl-like expressions and reactions. \nLively images\, fun action scenes colored with excitement and slapstick\, and a novel viewpoint that refreshingly satirizes corporate tactics are blended into a movie bursting with fashionable and chic taste\, sweeping us away into a feel-good world that “could have been done before but never had.” \nTrailer (Japanese only):
