SUMMARY:Continuing Learning Japanese 19: Thornlea Secondary School Class Observation
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \nContinuing Learning Japanese XIX \nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (Ontario Chapter)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Yet\, it appears that teachers do not know much about the other institutions\, courses or programmes. This lack of understanding can sometimes be found even within the same institution. We believe that it is very important and necessary for teachers to know what their current students have previously studied and in what type of environment that education took place. Similarly\, it is important to be informed of the available learning opportunities for students who wish to continue studying Japanese. We believe it is essential for teachers to build a strong and active network that enables them to communicate with one another. Since December 2009\, the Ontario Chapter (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nIn the 19th event of the series\, we will visit Thornlea Secondary School\, and observe one of Ms. Taiko Feldkamp’s high school credit Japanese classes. \nDate: Saturday\, May 2\, 2015\nPlace: Thornlea Secondary School (8075 Bayview Avenue\, Thornhill\, Ontario L3T 4N4)\nTime: 10:30 AM (Tentative)\n★Participants will be notified of the meeting place and time via email.\n\nSchedule (Tentative): \n\n\n\nJapanese class observation: 11:00 AM – noon\nA discussion with students (including introductions of participants’ Japanese classes) and Q&A: noon-12:45 PM\n\n\n\n  \nPlease scroll to the bottom for registration\nRegistration Deadline: Wednesday\, April 29\, 2015 or when all 8 spots are filled. \n* Due to the nature of the event\, the number of participants is limited. We may have to limit the number of participants from the same organization.\n* Feel free to contact the following if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:TCAF presents: TATSUMI movie screening and tribute
DESCRIPTION:In memory of the pioneering gekiga manga artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi\, (June 10\, 1935 – March 7\, 2015)\, Toronto Comic Arts Festival and The Japan Foundation\, Toronto present a special screening of Tatsumi\, Eric Khoo’s 2011 animated film. Tatsumi\, a tribute to the life and work of Yoshihiro Tatsumi\, will be introduced by TCAF’s Christopher Butcher\, and other local friends of the artist. Mr. Tatsumi was an honoured guest at TCAF in 2009\, when he published his autobiographical manga\, A Drifting Life. \nTATSUMI celebrates the life and work of Japanese comics artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi—a manga pioneer who elevated the genre to a new level of creative expression and adult realism. A comics-crazed teenager\, Tatsumi began to get published and was able to support his poor family in postwar occupied Japan. He finds even greater inspiration after meeting his idol\, the famous Disney-esque animator Osamu Tezuka. But despite his success\, Tatsumi became dissatisfied with making whimsical children’s comics. In the late 1950s\, Tatsumi coined the term gekiga (dramatic pictures) and redefined the manga landscape with an alternative genre for adults. Realistic and disquieting\, his work began to grapple with the darker aspects of life in his rapidly changing country—with stories that are perverse\, shocking and darkly comic. A tribute to an artist who made comics cinematic\, filmmaker Eric Khoo’s (BE WITH ME) inventive animated drama brings Tatsumi’s memoir A Drifting Life and five of his classic stories to life. \nContains adult themes and images; not suitable for children. \n“A eye-popping visual treat and a journey into the creative spirit.” —Variety \n“A fascinating and ultimately moving tribute to a seminal comic artist’s dark\, disquieting but powerful works.”—Hollywood Reporter

SUMMARY:May Movies: The Wind Rises
DESCRIPTION:Hayao Miyazaki\, 2013\, 127 min.\nIn Japanese with English subtitles\nMiyazaki’s final film is a fictionalized biography of aeronautics engineer Jiro Horikoshi who\, too nearsighted to become a pilot\, dedicated his life to building the perfect flying machine. Episodes from Jiro’s life\, including the great earthquake of 1923\, his fateful romance with a young invalid\, and the beginning of WWII\, are interspersed with dream sequences in which he flies and converses with his hero\, the Italian aeronautical engineer Caproni\, and contemplates the dilemma of creating a thing of beauty which will ultimately be used for destructive purposes. \n“To see The Wind Rises is to simultaneously marvel at the work of a master and regret that this film is likely his last.”\n-Kenneth Turan\, L.A. Times \n“Miyazaki is at the peak of his visual craftsmanship here\, alternating lush\, boldly coloured rural vistas with epic\, crowded urban canvases\, soaring aerial perspectives and test flights both majestic and ill-fated.”\n-Scott Soundas\, Variety \nscreened in conjunction with The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness \nRegistration for this event is now closed. Thank you for your interest.
