SUMMARY:Luncheon Seminar: Abenomics: Has it Worked? Will it Fail?
DESCRIPTION:The Japan Society and The Japan Foundation\, Toronto are honoured and privileged to co-present a luncheon seminar with French scholar Professor Sébastien Lechevalier. He is a professor at EHESS (L’École des hautes etudes en sciences socials/The School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences)\, president of the France-Japan Foundation of EHESS\, director of the French Network for Asian Studies\, and a recipient of a Japan Foundation fellowship. His recent publications include The Great Transformation of Japanese Capitalism (Science-Po 2011\, Routledge\, 2014\, Iwanami Shoten\, 2015). Professor Lechevalier has been invited to speak by various organizations including Japanese business associations and the foreign chamber of commerce in Japan. \nWhat assessment can be made of Abenomics three years after their initial implementation and midway through the mandate of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe? Fears that they would give rise to an inflationary spiral or a sovereign and banking crisis did not materialize. At the same time\, despite encouraging results in terms of inflation\, growth outcomes remain disappointing. The continued concerted use of different levers of economic policy is needed to consolidate the exit from deflation and to strengthen growth. \nBeyond the most recent period\, Abenomics is hard to understand without reference to Japan’s economic history since the bursting of the real estate and financial bubble. What are the lessons of Japan’s “lost decades”?\n\nThe Japanese experience over the past twenty-five years provides useful benchmarks to understand the risks to North America and Europe of protracted slower growth\, or the effects of quantitative easing policies implemented in Japan over fifteen years. These lessons were followed very closely by economic policy makers in North America but much less so in Europe\, until recently. \nLocation: DLA Piper (Canada) LLP\, Toronto Office\n60th Floor\, Jasper Room\n1 First Canadian Place\, 100 King St W\, Toronto\, ON M5X 1E2 \nCost: Member $20; Non-member $25\nLight buffet lunch and drinks will be served. \nHow to register:\nPlease email your name\, organization\, and title to admin@japansocietycanada.com by Monday\, October 3\, 2016. Please note that space for this event is limited. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and registrants will receive a confirmation email from The Japan Society.

SUMMARY:October Films at The Revue: The Great Sasuke
DESCRIPTION:The Great Sasuke\n2015\, Mikiko Sasaki\, 69 min. PG\nCanadian premiere- director present for intro and Q&A! \nAs the founder of Michinoku Pro-Wrestling\, the masked wrestler known as The Great Sasuke brought Mexican-style lucha libre to Japan in the 1990s and became an international star\, known as a showman with a flair for crazy ideas and dangerous moves. Mikiko Sasaki’s documentary finds Sasuke at a turning point in his career\, considering a return to politics (he once served as the first masked member of the Iwate Prefectural Diet) and dealing with the effects on his body of 20 years in the ring. A warm portrait of a true individualist\, The Great Sasuke also manages to touch on the challenges being married to a risk-taking athlete\, the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami in Tohoku\, and the travails of a local politician on the campaign trail\, offering an unconventional slice of life in Northern Japan. \nimage © Jonathan Schwarz\n\nMikiko Sasaki is a documentary filmmaker based in Oakland\, CA. She grew up in Morioka\, Iwate\, the same town The Great Sasuke is from. Her award winning short documentary\, Story of a Businesswoman\, screened at numerous film festivals around the country\, and was broadcast on MNET in 2011. She also works as a documentary and commercial editor in San Francisco Bay Area\, and is currently developing a few documentary projects. \n\nRegister for The Great Sasuke

SUMMARY:Takashi Hiraide Author's Talk: The life of a book....somewhere between the Cat and the Walnut.
DESCRIPTION:Takashi Hiraide\, celebrated author and book designer\, will discuss his literary and artistic practice in relation to his published works and ongoing mail art experiment.  Hiraide contemplates the life of what we consider to be a “book” and its origins in the form of diaries and letters. Hiraide is involved in the complete process of bringing a book to life\, including the book-binding\, design and in some cases\, even the shipping to an individual reader\, as exhibited within “Takashi Hiraide —- Airpost Poetry Book Design for One from One.” His modern art influences and book design will be explored in relation to the current exhibition. The interplay of different literary forms and genres is a constant throughout Hiraide’s body of work. This will be discussed by exploring the principles of the Japanese “I novel” (a genre of confessional\, fictionalized memoir)\, Dada and Surrealism found in The Guest Cat\, and how poetics\, autobiography and playful linguistics merge in For the Fighting Spirit of the Walnut. \nTo register\, please contact rsvp@jftor.org including your full name\, phone number and total number of guests. You will receive a confirmation email. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Continuing Learning Japanese 22: Toronto Japanese Language School Recorded Class Observation
\n担当：\n国際交流基金トロント日本文化センター　齋藤典子\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org　　Web site: www.jftor.org \nCAJLE　小室リー郁子\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Web site: http://www.cajle.info/ \n  \nInformation Exchange Meeting for Japanese Language Teachers:\nContinuing Learning Japanese 22\nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Yet\, it appears that teachers do not know much about the other institutions\, courses or programmes. This lack of understanding can sometimes be found even within the same institution. We believe that it is very important and necessary for teachers to know what their current students have previously studied and in what type of environment that education took place. Similarly\, it is important to be informed of the available learning opportunities for students who wish to continue studying Japanese.  We believe it is essential for teachers to build a strong and active network that enables them to communicate with one another. Since December 2009\, the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nIn the 22nd event of the series\, we will have a showing of a video of an adult Japanese class (level 2) at Toronto Japanese Language School. Through this recorded class observation\, we hope that participating teachers are able to have the chance to reflect on issues in their own teaching and to share good points from the video that we can use. After the explanations of the background of the class\, we are going to watch the video and then have a discussion between participants. Please join us! \n  \nDate: Saturday\, October 29\, 2016\nTime: 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm (Doors open at 2pm)\nPlace: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto   2 Bloor Street East\, Suite 300\, Toronto\, Ontario \nRegistration (mandatory): Please register using the form below. \nFor Inquiries:\nNoriko Saito (The Japan Foundation\, Toronto)\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org　　Web site: www.jftor.org \nIkuko Komuro-Lee (CAJLE)\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Web site: http://www.cajle.info/
