SUMMARY:Japanese Movies at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema: Sue\, Mai and Sawa
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Osamu Minorikawa\n2013\, 106 minutes\, PG\nStarring  Ko Shibasaki\, Yôko Maki\, Shinobu Terajima\nComedy/drama\n\nSue\, Mai and Sawa documents the enduring friendship of three single women in their thirties as they confront the challenges\, indignities and rewards of work\, love and family.  Sue-chan is an inventive cook at a chic bistro who is struggling to adjust to a new leadership role. Mai-chan works in sales\, but spends a lot of time covering for her incompetent boss. And Sawa-san (a few years older\, hence the more formal honorific –san) is a freelance illustrator caring for her bedridden grandmother.  Beautifully filmed and superbly cast\, with a soft\, aspirational gloss that belies the harder truths at its core\, this is a sharply observant film that refuses to be dismissed as a simple chick flick. \nPresented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and the Consulate-General of Japan in Toronto \nCommunity partner: Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival \n \n  \n  \n  \n© 2012 “Sue\, Mai & Sawa” Production Committee\, 2013

SUMMARY:Japanese Movies at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema: A Tale of Samurai Cooking
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Yûzô Asahara\n2013\, 122 minutes\, PG\nStarring Aya Ueto\, Kengo Kôra\, Kimiko Yo\nHistorical comedy/drama\n\nHaru has an excellent sense of taste and great talent as a chef\, but her “spirited character” was too much for her first husband\, who divorced her after only one year of marriage. When a famous samurai chef from Kaga observes Haru’s culinary abilities\, he has a brilliant idea. The Funaki family\, who have served the Lord of Kaga for generations\, are known as “kitchen samurai” for their innovative dishes. However\, the heir to the family business\, Yasunobu\, shows little aptitude for or interest in cuisine. In order to save the Funaki family name and their reputation as kitchen samurai\, Haru agrees to marry Yasunobu and teach him the art of cooking. But will he be a willing student of this independent and opinionated new sensei? \nKAGA CUISINE \nThis story was inspired by a real-life family in Kaga that survived countless historical upheavals with its cuisine. Kaga Cuisine is famous for wide variety of luxurious dishes served on colorful lacquer ware and Kutani porcelain\, ranging from ordinary home cooking to Chinese-influenced haute cuisine rivalling even that of Kyoto. \nPresented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and the Consulate-General of Japan in Toronto \nCommunity Partner: Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre \n \n  \n  \n© 2013 “A Tale of Samurai Cooking” Film Partners
