SUMMARY:Views of Vengeance: Hana
DESCRIPTION:in conjunction with Legendary Loyalty: The 47 Ronin in Japanese Prints\nHana\nDirected by Hirokazu Kore-eda\n2006\, 120 min\nJapanese with English subtitles \n[Reservations are now closed. Thank you for your interest. We will have a rush line starting 30 minutes before the event\, and will start to release unclaimed seats 10 minutes before the event. Unfortunately\, we cannot guarantee a seat.] \nDespite being set in the same location and time period of the Ako incident\, Hana is a samurai revenge movie in which not much happens. If you’re expecting dramatic battle scenes and bloviating about honour\, you’ll definitely be disappointed. However\, if you approach it from the humanist perspective of master director’s Hirokazu Kore-eda’s best films\, you’ll find a neat slice of life in the Edo slums that tears down the machismo of the jidai-geki genre with spirited populism (and a surprising amount of toilet humour). \nIn Hana’s Edo\, unemployed peasants do a lot of hanging out\, entertaining themselves with games\, sparring and gossip. Their main “job” is producing manure\, which their landlord sells to farmers. Soza is an unemployed samurai looking to avenge his father’s death\, but he’s not highly motivated to do so. He’s basically a peaceful guy who enjoys taking baths\, playing with songbirds and teaching math and writing to the neighbourhood kids. Anyway\, everyone agrees that revenge is sort of “out of fashion.” In the absence of actual war\, there is an annual “vengeance play” put on by the villagers; meanwhile\, the legendary 47 ronin lurk in the background\, grumbling and biding their time…

SUMMARY:Japanese Movies in Hamilton: A Tale of Samurai Cooking
DESCRIPTION:Presented in cooperation with the Hamilton Central Public Library \nDirected by Yûzô Asahara\n2013\, 122 minutes\nStarring Aya Ueto\, Kengo Kôra\, Kimiko Yo\nHistorical comedy/drama \nHaru has an excellent sense of taste and great talent as a chef\, but her “spirited character” was too much for her first husband\, who divorced her after only one year of marriage. When a famous samurai chef from Kaga observes Haru’s culinary abilities\, he has a brilliant idea. The Funaki family\, who have served the Lord of Kaga for generations\, are known as “kitchen samurai” for their innovative dishes. However\, the heir to the family business\, Yasunobu\, shows little aptitude for or interest in cuisine. In order to save the Funaki family name and their reputation as kitchen samurai\, Haru agrees to marry Yasunobu and teach him the art of cooking. But will he be a willing student of this independent and opinionated new sensei? \nKAGA CUISINE \nThis story was inspired by a real-life family in Kaga that survived countless historical upheavals with its cuisine. Kaga Cuisine is famous for wide variety of luxurious dishes served on colorful lacquer ware and Kutani porcelain\, ranging from ordinary home cooking to Chinese-influenced haute cuisine rivalling even that of Kyoto.\nImage © 2013 A Tale of Samurai Cooking Film Partners

SUMMARY:Rakugo—Japanese Traditional Storytelling Performance
DESCRIPTION:co-presented by the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto\nsubtitled in English\nGet ready to laugh this February! The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre will host a “Rakugo-kai” with veteran Rakugo star Yanagiya Sankyo. \nHe became an apprentice to Yanagiya Kosan V and received the high shin’uchi rank in 1981. A gifted performer\, he is famous for his ability to portray the subtlest emotions of a character during a performance. \nIn rakugo\, a lone storyteller in traditional garb sits on stage. Using only a paper fan (sensu) and a small cloth (tenugui) as props\, and without standing up from the seiza sitting position\, the rakugo artist depicts a long and complicated comical story. The story always involves the dialogue of two or more characters\, the difference between the characters depicted only through change in pitch\, tone\, and a slight turn of the head.  Absolutely fascinating and guaranteed to leave you laughing. \nTickets: (416) 441-2345

But on his day of triumph\, Kumagai\, one of the commanding officers\, suffers in agony trying to fulfill his duty and devotion to his lord Yoshitsune. This play was originally written for the puppet theatre and through its formal structure achieves the passion and solemnity of classic drama. A powerful warrior is transformed from a statuesque figure to a pure victim of the inhumanity of war. The decisions which will be made will change lives. This character development is depicted stylistically through the sung narration of Gidayu music. Three Living National Treasures—Kichiemon\, Tomijuro\, and Tojuro—create a splendid tableau of historical grandeur. \n  \nTHREE THIEVES NAMES KICHISA (an urban outlaw story)\nSan’nin Kichisa 三人吉三 : 三人吉三廓初買 さんにんきちさくるわのはつかい \n\n \nPremiered in 1860\nWritten by Kawatake Mokuami\nDirected for the stage and Cinema Kabuki by Kushida Kazuyoshi\nRecorded live at Theater Cocoon\, Shibuya\, Tokyo\, 2014 \n136 min.\nSubtitled in English \nFor trailer please click here: For synopsis and more background click here. \nEarly 19th-century Edo (the former name of Tokyo) had juvenile delinquents and outlaws everywhere. Urban culture was overripe. Three thieves happen to meet on a dark New Year’s night. They feel compassion for each other instantly and vow brotherhood. But they do not know that this encounter is only one milestone of their fate. Long before the three meet\, their lives have already been entangled. An intricate web of destiny eventually drives them to their deaths. Kankuro\, Shichinosuke\, and Matsuya are three of the most promising young Kabuki actors. This classic play is given new life by these young talents in an unconventional production by Kushida at a contemporary venue\, Theater Cocoon\, located in the Shibuya district of Tokyo\, known as the Street of Youth.

\nhttps://tr.jpf.go.jp/event/2017_workshop01/\n  \nInformation Exchange Meeting for Japanese Language Teachers:\nContinuing Learning Japanese 23\nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Yet\, it appears that teachers do not know much about the other institutions\, courses or programmes. This lack of understanding can sometimes be found even within the same institution. We believe that it is very important and necessary for teachers to know what their current students have previously studied and in what type of environment that education took place. Similarly\, it is important to be informed of the available learning opportunities for students who wish to continue studying Japanese.  We believe it is essential for teachers to build a strong and active network that enables them to communicate with one another. Since December 2009\, the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nIn the 23rd event of the series\, we would like to share activities targeting speaking proficiency. Although both students and teachers are always interested in speaking activities\, we often hear that there is no time in the classroom. We welcome participants to share any speaking activities such as conversation activities\, presentations\, and skits\, which came alive in your classroom and were popular with your students\, including warm-up and even out-of-class activities. \nWe ask that participants reflect beforehand on their own classroom and bring materials\, etc. to introduce the activities they wish to share during this gathering. \nPlease join us! \nDate: Saturday\, February 25\, 2017\nTime: 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm (Doors open at 2pm)\nPlace: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto   2 Bloor Street East\, Suite 300\, Toronto\, Ontario\nRegistration (mandatory): Please register using the form below. \nFor Inquiries:\nNoriko Saito (The Japan Foundation\, Toronto)\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org　　Web site: www.jftor.org \nIkuko Komuro-Lee (CAJLE)\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Web site: http://www.cajle.info/ \n* JFT Teachers’ workshop: “How can we raise students’ speaking ability in class?” is also scheduled on Saturday\, February 4. Please feel free to join this workshop\, too!\nhttps://tr.jpf.go.jp/event/2017_workshop01/
