SUMMARY:Silent Revue: Yasujiro Ozu's TOKYO CHORUS
DESCRIPTION:Special Co-presentation with The Silent Revue\nTOKYO CHORUS 東京の合唱 \nSunday November 18\, 2018 4:15 PM\nDirected by Yasujiro Ozu\, 1931 (PG) 91 minutes\, 35 mm\nFeaturing live piano accompaniment\nDuring Japan’s depression-era Shōwa period\, young father Shinji Okajima loses his job and must find a way to provide for his wife Sugako (Emiko Yagumo) and three children.\n \nFeaturing stunning performances from child actors Hideo Sugawara and five-year-old Hideko Takamine (who would grow up to become one of Japan’s most legendary actresses)\, Ozu conjured a personal\, empathetic viewpoint of a family who\, while struggling\, are bound by their bonds.\nShow More details about Yasujirō Ozu’s TOKYO CHORUS (1931) in 35mm \nA tribute “to the language of silent film which Ozu undoubtedly recognized as a medium on the verge of disappearance” (Catherine Russell\, Cineaste)\, Silent Revue presents one of the master Japanese filmmaker’s earliest and greatest masterpieces—1931’s TOKYO CHORUS. Oscillating between a warmhearted family comedy and a heart-wrenching\, realist drama\, TOKYO CHORUS is in dialogue with Ozu’s most revered sound films including TOKYO STORY. During Japan’s depression-era Shōwa period\, young father Shinji Okajima (played by the incredible Tokihiko Okada just a few short years before his death at the age of 30) loses his job and must find a way to provide for his wife Sugako (Emiko Yagumo) and their three children. Competing with the material expectations of his spoiled seven-year-old son—who rejects his father’s gift of a scooter after demanding a bicycle—as well as his wife who has her best kimono sold when their daughter becomes ill\, Shinji battles life’s disappointments. \nFeaturing stunning performances from child actors Hideo Sugawara and five-year-old Hideko Takamine (who would grow up to become one of Japan’s most legendary actresses)\, Ozu conjured a personal\, empathetic portrait of a family that\, while struggling\, are strengthened by their familial bonds. Heavily influenced by King Vidor’s 1928 THE CROWD\, Ozu’s TOKYO CHORUS prefigures such moving portrayals of fathers and sons as De Sica’s BICYCLE THIEVES\, while focusing specifically on the isolation and alienation of life in a modern city.  \n\nDirector: Yasujirô Ozu\nCast: Tokihiko Okada\, Emiko Yagumo\, Hideo Sugawara \n\nABOUT THE SILENT REVUE SERIES \n\nSilent Revue is Toronto’s celebrated ongoing exploration of Silent Cinema – the only year-round dedicated selection of silent films in a theatrical venue. SUMMARY:DARK & OCCULT Films From Japan: House
DESCRIPTION:Special Co-presentation with The Revue Cinema\nHouse ハウス\nMonday November 19\, 2018 9:15 PM\nDirected by Nobuhiko Obayashi\, 1977\n88 minutes\, Japanese with English subtitles\nGet spooked with these 70’s and 80’s films that explores some dark\, apocalyptic and mysterious themes coming from Japan during the ‘occult film’ boom that was all the rage during that time in Japan. Viewer discretion is advised. \nHow to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s indescribable 1977 movie House (Hausu)? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits\, a demonic house cat\, a bloodthirsty piano\, and other ghoulish visions\, all realized by Obayashi via mattes\, animation\, and collage effects. Equally absurd and nightmarish\, House might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet. It’s one of the most exciting cult discoveries in years.  – CRITERION COLLECTION \n  \nTo learn about other DARK & OCCULT films in the series\, click here > \nFILM WILL BE SCREENING AT THE REVUE CINEMA at 400 RONCESVALLES AVE. \nTicket price has been reduced! SUMMARY:CONNECTION & CATASTROPHE: Media Theory and the Occult Film Boom in Japan
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1970s Japan was in the grip of an “occult boom” that exploded across popular media. This was a fad\, but also something more: A popular media theory that tried to come to terms with a new media ecology. The ripple effects could be felt for decades in pop culture\, politics\, and social movements. \nThis talk will outline the occult boom in film and track its roots in a new relationship to media. It will trace its route through media mix zombies\, the demise of the student movement and film producers’ conversations with UFOs. Focusing on two basic fantasies of a new kind of connectivity it will follow the logic of the occult film boom to its unexpected catastrophes. \nOn Thursday\, November 22\, Professor Zahlten will be in Montreal to give another talk supported by the Japan Foundation\, Toronto\, The Electric Ecology: Models of Connectivity in Japan’s Media Century\, at Concordia University. \nDuring October and November\, the Japan Foundation Toronto is hosting a film series\, DARK & OCCULT Films From Japan. Come get better acquainted with the subject of this talk by watching the occult films of 1970s & 1980s Japan. \n\nAlexander Zahlten is Associate Professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. His work centers on film and audiovisual culture in East Asia\, with a focus on Japan. His recent work touches on topics such as film’s transition from environment to ecology\, ‘amateur’ film and media production\, or the different modes of media theorization that media cultures produce. \nRecent publications include the co-edited volume Media Theory in Japan (Duke University Press\, 2017\, with Marc Steinberg) and his monograph The End of Japanese Cinema: Industrial Genres\, National Times\, and Media Ecologies (Duke University Press\, 2017)\, which maps the transformations of the film industry in Japan from the 1960s – 2000s. \nAmong others he has curated film programs at the German Film Museum or the Japan Society New York. He was Program Director for the Nippon Connection Film Festival\, the largest festival for film from Japan\, from 2002 to 2010.
