SUMMARY:THERMAE ROMAE & THRONE OF BLOOD: Japanese Film Festival in Hamilton
DESCRIPTION:Japanese Film Festival: Nihon Eiga Sai in Hamilton 2019\nJoin us for free screenings of contemporary movies from JAPAN at the Central Hamilton Public Library on Sunday Feb 3 + 10! All films in Japanese w/Eng subtitles. In between films\, there will be a brief intermission. We will be serving some Japanese refreshments so please arrive early! RSVP recommended\, drop-ins welcome. Details about February 10\, 2019 Japanese films here > \n \nTHERMAE ROMAE テルマエ・ロマエ\nSunday February 3 @1:00 PM \n@Hamilton Central Public Library\, free admission\, RSVP recommended but not required \nJapanese with English subtitles \nDirector\, Hideki Takeuchi (108 minutes) 2012 \nAn epic bath extravaganza! \nLucius\, an architect of spa baths for the Roman Empire\, inadvertently travels through time and finds himself in a modern Japanese bathhouse. He takes elements of Japanese culture that he is inspired by\, and brings it back with him to Rome and becomes hugely successful\, which leads the Emperor to command him to build a massive spa. \nThermae Romae is based on the adaptation of Mari Yamazaki‘s award winning manga\, which has won both the 2010 Manga Taisho and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for Best Short Work. The film features a roster of talented actors who throw themselves into their roles as citizens of ancient Rome\, including Japanese heart throb Hiroshi Abe who plays the protagonist Lucius. Another striking aspect of the films production is its large open set built at Cinecitta\, Italy’s largest film studio. \n(c) 2012 “THERMAE ROMAE” Film Partners \n \n \nMari Yamazaki\, manga author together with Stars Aya Ueto and Hiroshi Abe at the premiere of the film at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. \n  \nTHRONE OF BLOOD 蜘蛛巣城\n \nSunday February 3 @3:00 PM \n@Hamilton Central Public Library\, free admission\, RSVP recommended but not required \nJapanese with English subtitles \nDirector\, Akira Kurosawa (110 minutes) 1957 \nA vivid\, visceral Macbeth adaptation\, Throne of Blood\, directed by Akira Kurosawa\, sets Shakespeare’s definitive tale of ambition and duplicity in a ghostly\, fog-enshrouded landscape in feudal Japan. As a hardened warrior who rises savagely to power\, Toshiro Mifune gives a remarkable\, animalistic performance\, as does Isuzu Yamada as his ruthless wife. Throne of Blood fuses classical Western tragedy with formal elements taken from Noh theater to create an unforgettable cinematic experience. \nDespite the change in setting and language and numerous creative liberties\, Throne of Blood often is considered one of the better film adaptations of the play. It won two Mainichi Film Awards\, including Best Actor for Toshiro Mifune. \n \nCommunity Partners:\nHamilton Chapter of National Association of Japanese Canadians and the Hamilton Canadian Japanese Cultural Centre \nDetails about February 10\, 2019 Japanese films here >

SUMMARY:Secrets of the Smithsonian Samurai: Rediscovering the Lost ‘Living Dolls’ of Japan
DESCRIPTION:The 1893 Chicago World’s Fair was a global spectacle unlike anything the world had ever seen. To showcase its history and culture at the Fair\, Japan sent a myriad of arts\, crafts\, and other treasures. Among these were eight iki ningyō (生人形) or ‘living dolls’ – lifelike mannequins that depict a unique Japanese aesthetic – including an intriguing samurai set piece. The Smithsonian purchased these mannequins upon the Fair’s completion and later exhibited them intermittently at the US National Museum. After being removed from display\, however\, these enigmatic mannequins disappeared and were presumed lost for decades. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Robert Pontsioen of the Smithsonian Institution traces his recent rediscovery of these artifacts\, and explores their place in the artistic and cultural milieu of late 19th century Japan and America. Through collaboration with traditional artisans in Japan\, Dr. Pontsioen describes how we can both increase our understanding of museum collections and reunite source communities with treasured objects from their past. \nRobert Pontsioen is a Researcher in the Asian Cultural History Program at the National Museum of Natural History\, Smithsonian Institution. A Japan Foundation Fellowship recipient in 2016- 2017\, his research involves extensive fieldwork among artisan communities\, and centers on Japanese and other Asian material culture with a focus on traditional arts and crafts\, the reproduction of craft skills\, and strategies for cultural heritage promotion and preservation. The co-author of four books\, his recent publications include “The Alexander Graham Bell Collection of Japanese Masks at the Smithsonian” (Nineteenth Century Art Worldwide\, Vol. 17\, 2018)\, in which he describes and interprets seven unique and evocative masks collected in Japan by the famed inventor. \n  \n  \n  \n

Together with the cute bean sized Shiba-Inu\, Jiro must venture outside to find his mother. \nThe film is a film adaptation of a popular TV series\, and is the first of three sequels including one in 3D. \n  \nNOBODY TO WATCH OVER ME 誰も守ってくれない \nSunday February 10 @3:00 PM \n@Hamilton Central Public Library\, free admission\, RSVP recommended but not required \nJapanese with English subtitles \nDirector\, Ryoichi Kimizuka (118 minutes) 2009 \nFocusing on the accused’s sister\, bright-eyed high school student Saori (Mirai Shida)\, this deep thriller follows the suffering of the family of a teenage murderer and the struggles of Detective Katsuura (Koichi Sato) ordered to protect them from the unwanted media onslaught and public scrutiny. There are of course direct functional reasons for both personal and commercial packaging: physical protection; containment or agglomeration; security; information transmission\, or even just for general convenience\, to name but a few. However\, beyond these pragmatic rationales there are important\, often unspoken\, cultural uses for packaging and wrapping\, e.g. a package as package may have an emotional\, or a communicative\, or a symbolic import that is integral to the traditions of a culture. This talk proposes to introduce some of these same elements and their aspects as they inhere in Japanese packaging and wrapping practices. \nDr. Rudi Meyer holds a BFA from NSCAD University\, a BA from McGill University\, an MA from the University of Toronto\, and a PhD from McGill University. He has taught at both McGill and Concordia University\, while keeping up a freelance design practice\, and is now the Director of the Master of Design Program at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD University). He has had a long association with Japan\, having lived there for two years and visiting almost every year since his return to Canada to take up a position at NSCAD. He is keenly interested in Japanese design and has participated in a number of conferences devoted to the topic in Japan. His research interests also include design through use; repair and ad-hoc design as sources of innovation; flexible urban dwellings. In addition to studio courses he teaches design history and theory. \nReservations are now closed. Thank you for your interest. We will have a rush line starting 30 minutes before the event\, and will start to release unclaimed seats 10 minutes before the event.
