SUMMARY:Chikyu Films: Hunt for Matsutake
DESCRIPTION:CHIKYU FILMS  \nThis spring\, we will feature a series of films\, CHIKYU FILMS\, which will share the stories and people who examine the close relationship to our environment\, our earth\, or Chikyu 地球 in Japanese. \nTHE HUNT FOR MATSUTAKE\nApril 4\, 6:30 PM & April 17\, 2:00 PM \nDirected by Alejandro Yoshizawa (40 min.) 2011 \nPreceding the film\, we will be screening the short films of the We Heart Canada and Japan 90 Short Film Contest (20 min). There will also be a Q+A and discussion after the film. \n  \nThis documentary looks at Japanese-Canadian history and the history of Matsutake hunting. Matsutake – a delicacy in Japanese cuisine – can only be found in the wild\, and is both a commercial and cultural symbol. The film chronicles annual trips into the forests of Canada in search of the elusive and much sought-after mushroom. \nI believe there is something unique about these rare\, precious mushrooms. For more than just their earthy aroma\, they are special to many Japanese people in North America\, symbolizing a connection to Japan yet rooted (literally) in Canadian and American soil. This simple Fall tradition flourished before and now alongside the now multi-million dollar matsutake exporting industry. \nBy documenting matsutake hunting\, I hope to learn about our shared history. Yet perhaps most of all\, I would like to tell a simple\, sweet\, and heartwarming story decades in the making. \nFall can’t come fast enough. – Alejandro Yoshizawa

SUMMARY:Edo Hyaku Talk Series\, Part III
DESCRIPTION:Edo Hyaku Talk Series\, Part III: HIROSHIGE\, EDO ARTIST\nTalk and slide presentation about the woodblock prints from Hiroshige’s Edo Hyaku\, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series.\nCoinciding with the exhibition Landmarks From Before It Was Called Tokyo: Hiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo \nBy Carol Dorman\, Stuart Jackson Gallery\, Toronto \nAdmission free\, Reservation required \nMonday\, April 8\, 2019\, 6:30-8:00 P.M. \nEdo Hyaku Talk Part III: Hiroshige\, Edo Artist \n \nHiroshige was a son of Edo\, truly one of the most remarkable cities that ever existed.  Edo’s unique culture provided fertile ground for all manner of arts to flourish and for the growth of some of Japan’s most famous artists.   In many ways Hiroshige’s career path was typical for the time until his lyrical and sometimes breathtaking 1833-34 series of The 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō proved to be a best-seller.  That series established him as a master of the genre and he continued to produce popular landscape series through the rest of his career.  He achieved a lasting relevance because of the beauty\, novelty and variety of his compositions\, but also through his choice of subject matter.  More than any other artist of the time\, Hiroshige showed us his world:  the countryside\, the cities\, and their inhabitants.  His monumental Edo Hyaku series is a portrait of the seasons\, the moods\, the variety and the beauty of that city – Hiroshige’s city. \n \nCarol Dorman has been an associate at the Stuart Jackson Gallery\, specializing in antique Japanese prints (ukiyo-e)\, for over 20 years.  Ms. Dorman has lectured on ukiyo-e to various groups in Ontario and Quebec and most recently at the University of Delhi\, India.  She has curated and been involved in print exhibitions at the Japan Foundation\, the Gardiner Museum\, and the Stuart Jackson Gallery and in 2018 she began teaching classes in Japanese art and culture through Ryerson’s Life Institute.  Ms. Dorman became interested in Japanese art at university and began collecting ukiyo-e prints while completing a Master of Arts degree in Sociocultural Anthropology at the University of Toronto.

SUMMARY:Chikyu Films: Force of Nature
DESCRIPTION:CHIKYU FILMS  \nThis spring\, we will feature a series of films\, CHIKYU FILMS\, which will share the stories and people who examine the close relationship to our environment\, our earth\, or Chikyu 地球 in Japanese. \n\nFORCE OF NATURE: The David Suzuki Movie\nApril 23\, 6:30 PM \nDocumentary Directed by Sturla Gunnarsson (92 min.) 2010 \n \n  \nThis feature documentary profiles the life and work of world-renowned Canadian scientist\, educator\, broadcaster and activist David Suzuki on the occasion of his last lecture in 2009—a lecture he describes as “a distillation of my life and thoughts\, my legacy\, what I want to say before I die.” As Suzuki reflects on his family history—including the persecution of Japanese Canadians during WWII—and his discovery of the power and beauty of the natural world\, we are spurred to examine our own relationship to nature\, scientific knowledge\, and sustainability throughout modernity and beyond. \n(c) National Film Board of Canada

Stay tuned for more details! \n\nHAPPY HOUR\nDirected by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (317 min.) 2015 Japanese with English subtitles \nA powerful affirmation of the immersive potential of cinema. Happy Hour is a slow-burning epic chronicling the emotional journey of four thirtysomething women in the misty seaside city of Kobe. As they navigate the unsteady currents of their work\, domestic\, and romantic lives a sudden\, unexpected rift opens between that propels each to a new\, richer understanding of life and love. Filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s wise\, precisely observed\, compulsively watchable drama of friendship and midlife awakening runs over five hours\, yet the leisurely duration is not an indulgence but a strategy to create a novelistic space for everyday moments to become charged with possibility that yields a subtle emotional intensity rarely possible in a standard-length film. Happy Hour is far more than just an ordinary melodrama. It is a spectacularly complex and fiercely poetic rendering of the details of daily life in which ideas and feelings are swayed by the unseen forces of friendship and love and buffeted by the weight of deception\, loyalty and tradition. \nWinner of awards at major international festivals—including Locarno\, where stars Sachie Tanaka\, Hazuki Kikuchi\, Maiko Mihara and Rira Kawamura shared the Golden Leopard for Best Actress—Happy Hour has brought new attention to the work and career of one of Japan’s most talented young directors. SUMMARY:Continuing Learning Japanese 29: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto Recorded Class Observation
\n担当：\n国際交流基金トロント日本文化センター　　齋藤典子\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org     Web site: www.jftor.org\nCAJLE　小室リー郁子\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca           Web site: www.cajle.info \n  \nInformation Exchange Meeting for Japanese Language Teachers:\nContinuing Learning Japanese 29\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto Recorded Class Observation\nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Yet\, it appears that teachers do not know much about the other institutions\, courses or programmes. This lack of understanding can sometimes be found even within the same institution. We believe that it is very important and necessary for teachers to know what their current students have previously studied and in what type of environment that education took place. Similarly\, it is important to be informed of the available learning opportunities for students who wish to continue studying Japanese.  We believe it is essential for teachers to build a strong and active network that enables them to communicate with one another. Since December 2009\, the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nIn the 29th event of the series\, we will view videos taken during classes held on March 19th and 28th at the Japan Foundation\, Toronto (cf. “Continuing Learning Japanese 28”). Through this recorded class observation\, we hope that participating teachers have the chance to reflect on their own teaching and to share things they would like to implement in class and potential challenges that could arise. \nAfter a background explanation of the classes\, we will watch the videos and then have a discussion amongst participants. \nPlease register using the form below. \nDate: Saturday\, April 27\, 2019 \nTime: 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm (Doors open at 2pm) \nPlace: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto　2 Bloor Street East\, Suite 300\, Toronto\, Ontario \nRegistration (mandatory): Please register using the form below. \n* Please feel free to contact the following individuals if you have any questions: \nFor Inquiries:\nNoriko Saito (The Japan Foundation\, Toronto)\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org　　Web site: www.jftor.org \nIkuko Komuro-Lee (CAJLE)\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Web site: www.cajle.info

In an effort to defend their home\, the tanuki learn to transform into humans and start playing tricks to make the workers think the construction site is haunted\, ending in a spectacular night-time spirit parade\, with thousands of ghosts\, dragons and other magical creatures descending on the city — in an abundance of fantastical characters that would not be matched on screen by Studio Ghibli until Spirited Away. \n(All images © 1994 Hatake Jimusho – Studio Ghibli – NH) \nTrailer below:
