SUMMARY:IKIGAI FILMS: Cutie and the Boxer
DESCRIPTION:Cutie and the Boxer\nDirected by Zachary Heinzerling (2013) 81 minutes \nThe Academy Award nominated Cutie and the Boxer is a moving account of the chaotic and unconventional 40-year love affair and creative partnership between action painter Ushio Shinohara and his wife\, Noriko\, also an artist. Ushio\, who punches canvases with paint-laden gloves\, is famous in Japan and in Manhattan’s art circles\, yet wider recognition has eluded him. Noriko\, 21 years his junior\, put her artistic ambitions on hold to be a wife and mother — and an assistant to her demanding husband. Now\, Noriko’s acclaimed “Cutie” series of drawings\, depicting the relationship between the title character and a volatile figure named Bullie\, is turning their world upside down. Winner\, Directing Award: U.S. Documentary\, 2013 Sundance Film Festival. \n \nIkigai Film Series \nWhat keeps you going? How do you stay happy\, and live a long life? These are some universal questions that will be explored in this film series that looks into the concept of IKIGAI. In Japanese\, IKIGAI生き甲斐 essentially means “reason for being” or the thing that makes your life worthwhile\, and we will catch a glimpse of how IKIGAI plays a role in the lives of remarkable Japanese people in these four documentaries.

SUMMARY:Japanese Gardens: Visions and Practices of a Kyoto Gardener
DESCRIPTION:Reservations are now closed. Thank you for your interest. We will have a rush line starting 30 minutes before the event\, and will start to release unclaimed seats 10 minutes before the event. \nIn conjunction with our current exhibition\, Four Seasons of Gardens in Kyoto\, Hugo Torii will introduce his work and past projects in various Japanese gardens\, and give an overview of different Japanese garden styles. The talk will also cover topics such as how gardeners develop the essence of a garden through the combination of different features\, how the function of a Japanese garden influences garden design and Japanese gardening concepts and how they shape both our perception and our ability to experience and appreciate elements of a Japanese garden. \nHugo Torii is currently the Director of Ground Maintenance at the Portland Japanese Garden in Portland\, Oregon. The beginner grades are called Kyu and start from 10 Kyu to 1 Kyu. \nOnce you reach 1 Kyu level\, you are ready to take the first master’s grade\, which is called Dan (equal to black belt in other Japanese martial arts). In kendo there are eight Dan\, starting with first Dan and ending with eight. \nThe Kendo eighth Dan exam is notoriously difficult\, and famous for having the lowest success rate in Japan (less than 1%). The next most difficult test in Japan is the justice or bar exam with success rate of just over 3%. This is explored in this documentary.

SUMMARY:Continuing Learning Japanese 30: EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers
\n担当：\n国際交流基金トロント日本文化センター　　齋藤典子\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org     Web site: www.jftor.org\nCAJLE　小室リー郁子\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca           Web site: www.cajle.info \n  \nInformation Exchange Meeting for Japanese Language Teachers:\nContinuing Learning Japanese 30\nEdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers\nCanadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE)\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nJapanese is taught at several secondary schools in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Yet\, it appears that teachers do not know much about the other institutions\, courses or programmes. This lack of understanding can sometimes be found even within the same institution. We believe that it is very important and necessary for teachers to know what their current students have previously studied and in what type of environment that education took place. Similarly\, it is important to be informed of the available learning opportunities for students who wish to continue studying Japanese.  We believe it is essential for teachers to build a strong and active network that enables them to communicate with one another. Since December 2009\, the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nIn the 30th event of the series\, we will host an EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers. EdCamps are study groups where the participants play leading roles\, and discussion topics are decided by participants at registration and/or on the spot. Participants are welcome to suggest topics related to any problem they may face in the course of teaching\, or something they want to hear others’ opinions on\, etc. The goal is not to listen to success stories\, but for participants to work together to solve problems. \nExamples of topics previously suggested at the JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers: \n・Using the flipped classroom method effectively\n・Methods to increase the effectiveness of reading aloud\n・The shift from a grammar-based approach to an action-oriented approach\n・AI\, Virtual Reality\, and the future of Japanese language education\n・Marugoto\n・ICT (Information and Communications Technology)\n・Teaching kanji in a group\n・Fun ways to learn elementary kanji\n・Improving effectiveness when lessons are infrequent (e.g. once a week)\n・Supporting learners who are weak at speaking or roleplay\n・Increasing the motivation level of students\n・Effectively teach students of differing language ability\n・Fun ways to conduct reading comprehension\n・Creating reading comprehension lessons for intermediate and advanced learners\n・Switching from “Minna no Nihongo” to an action-oriented syllabus\n・Japanese language education for children\n・Extra-curricular\, cultural club activities \nPlease register using the form below. \nDate: Wednesday\, July 24\, 2019 \nTime: 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm (Doors open at 6pm) \nPlace: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto　2 Bloor Street East\, Suite 300\, Toronto\, Ontario \n* Please feel free to contact the following individuals if you have any questions: \nFor Inquiries:\nNoriko Saito (The Japan Foundation\, Toronto)\nE-mail: nsaito@jftor.org　　Web site: www.jftor.org \nIkuko Komuro-Lee (CAJLE)\nE-mail: ikuko.komuro.lee@utoronto.ca　　Web site: www.cajle.info
