Rated 15+ in Japan. \nAdapted from the Akutagawa Prize-winning novel of the same name from renowned Japanese crime author NAKAMUMRA Fuminori\, Embers 最後の命 is a suspense-filled portrayal of two childhood friends burdened by a tragic childhood memory and the murder that prompts them to confront their pasts. \nAs children\, Keito (YAGIRA Yuya) and Saeki (YANO Masato) witnessed a brutal assault. Saeki asks to meet up with Keito\, who has grown up struggling with his memory of the incident. However\, on the evening of their meeting\, Keito finds that a familiar call girl has been killed in his room… \n \n\nSunday\, June 5\, 12:30 PM – Wednesday\, June 8\, 11:59 PM (ET) | Register Here \nTune in for an exclusive interview with novelist NAKAMURA Fuminori as part of the Toronto International Festival of Author’s inaugural MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival. \nWhat motivates a killer? Is everyone capable of a crime as heinous as murder? Award-winning Japanese author Fuminori Nakamura’s latest book\, My Annihilation (translated by Sam Bett)\, gets to the crux of these queries in a deeply revealing and disturbingly honest examination of the psychological motives of a killer. Nakamura’s creative\, puzzling narrative style makes it nearly impossible to discern what is truth and what is fabrication\, until the very end. Trust no one when reading – not even yourself. Join a master of literary noir in this fascinating look into the darkest corners of human consciousness. This virtual event will be presented in Japanese with English captions.

SUMMARY:Women Directors in Contemporary Japanese Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Register for this event to receive a link to view the presentation anytime between Thursday\, June 9\, 7:00 PM (ET) and Sunday\, June 12\, 7:00 PM (ET).\n\n\nIn the mid-2000s\, there was an unprecedented boom of women making commercial films in Japan\, many winning awards at independent film festivals and securing screenings around the world. In this conversation\, Dr. Laird will discuss the emergence of women directors in early 21st century Japanese cinema industries and introduce prominent directors who have been successful in both domestic and international markets. She will discuss the various factors that supported a new career pathway for women in film\, as well as ongoing barriers that pose difficulties for continued success. \n\nColleen A. Laird\, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of British Columbia. Her primary focus is on Japanese women directors and has published on the industry relationships between women directors\, female identifying spectators\, and the contemporary Japanese film market. In addition to working on a monograph on Japanese women directors\, she is also the creator and organizer of the Japanese Women Directors Project\, a forthcoming collaborative web project that features three series of inter-related\, open-access educational videos. \n\nOnline Screenings: Films of ANDO Momoko\nAfter Dr. Laird’s talk\, check out our free screenings of 2 ANDO Momoko films! Please register for each film separately. \nDates: Friday\, June 10 – Sunday\, June 12\, 2022 \n \nAbout ANDO Momoko\nBorn in 1982\, the daughter of actor-director OKUDA Eiji and essayist ANDO Kazu\, and the sister of award-winning actress ANDO Sakura\, ANDO Momoko is certainly no stranger to the world of cinema. After graduating from the Slade School of Fine Arts in London and studying film at New York University\, she returned to Japan where she initially worked as an assistant on her father’s films while harboring strong ambitions to become a director in her own right. The result is her delicately nuanced 2009 debut A Piece of Our Life -Kakera-\, a free adaptation of Erica Sakurazawa’s manga about a lesbian love affair and boasts a soundtrack by former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha. In 2012\, she published her first novel which she then adapted into her second feature film\, 0.5mm\, starring her sister ANDO Sakura and receiving numerous awards including the Shanghai International Film Festival Best Director Award. \n0.5mm \n0.5ミリ | 2014 | Drama | 196 mins | Register here \nOne day\, home helper YAMAGISHI Sawa (ANDO Sakura) unwittingly gets caught up in a serious incident and loses her job\, forcing her to move out of her company’s dormitory. In 2004\, she made her manga debut in the monthly magazine Bessatsu Shojo Friend DX Juliet. Her first serialized work in a young men’s magazine was Ohayou Okaeri\, which was published in Morning Two. This was followed by Sensei’s Pious Lie\, which drew widespread attention for its focus on the theme of sexual violence. In addition\, Onna no Ie\, a series about two sisters who must live under one roof\, made the list for Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (This Manga is Amazing!) in the women’s category\, while Jigoku no Girlfriend\, a story about three women made housemates by chance\, was adapted into a live-action TV show. Her latest ongoing series\, Saturn Return\, which is published weekly in Big Comic Spirits magazine\, is a mystery that revolves around suicide and loss. \n  \nSensei’s Pious Lie\, Volume 1\nKodansha\, 2022 \nMisuzu Hara is a quiet\, reserved 24-year-old high school teacher whose world is turned upside down after her friend’s fiancé rapes her. SUMMARY:TCAF 2022: Live Drawing featuring Rumi Hara @ JFT
DESCRIPTION:  \nTCAF 2022: Live Drawing featuring Rumi Hara @ JFT\nCo-presented by Toronto Comic Arts Festival and The Japan Foundation\, Toronto. \nThe fun’s not over yet\, as Rumi Hara takes over the pen to dazzle fans with this incredible live drawing session. Watch as Rumi Hara creates the incredible\, imaginative worlds and characters that are the hallmark of Hara’s work.  \nClick here to RSVP  \n  \nFor Rumi Hara’s full schedule at Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2022\, visit https://www.torontocomics.com/ \n\n \nRumi Hara \nRumi Hara was born in Kyoto\, Japan\, and started printing her comics on a tiny home printer while working as a translator in Tokyo in 2010. After receiving an MFA in illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design\, Rumi moved to New York in 2014\, where she now lives and works as an illustrator and comics artist. Her comics series Nori was first self-published as minicomics and was nominated for an Ignatz Award in 2018 before being published by Drawn & Quarterly in 2020. Her most recent book is The Peanutbutter Sisters and Other American Stories (May 2022). \n  \nThe Peanutbutter Sisters and Other American Stories\nDrawn & Quarterly\, 2022\n \nAn immigrant weaves a new\, surreal Americana\, complete with bubblegum fights and bomb queens.\nThe Peanutbutter Sisters is a glorious balance of contradictions\, at once escapism and realism\, science fiction and slice of life. Two students explore the urban landscape while following Newton Creek\, the polluted Queens-Brooklyn border. As they do\, they plan a traditional Japanese play with contemporary pop culture. Another story features an intergalactic race of all living things set in the year 2099 and is a dazzling treatise on the environment and journalism. Yet sometimes the fantastical collides with the quotidian in the same story. A man struggling with vertigo during quarantine encounters a world of sexual revelry whenever he has a dizzy spell. The Peanutbutter sisters ride a hurricane into New York City and yet aren’t able to hitch a ride back with a whale due to a heavily polluted ocean.\nHara’s magical realist tendencies and diverse cast of characters all contort the tropes of the American comics canon. Yet above all else\, her innate control of the comics language—her ability to weave the absurd with the real on such a charming and commanding level—is refreshingly unrivaled. \nDownload PDF of the author details here \n  \n\n  \n\nClick here for more information >

Our aim is that this “Reference Collection” will be useful in both synchronous and asynchronous online classes through bringing together useful digital resources\, videos\, etc. that can be used with the Marugoto textbooks. \nThis current project will target materials to use with Marugoto Pre-Intermediate (A2/B1). Topics/sections of the textbook will be divided amongst the project members\, and each group or person will create a “Resource Collection” for the section they are tasked with. Examples of materials are convenient websites used by the project members or self-made teaching materials. Something made specifically for this project is also welcome! We hope that this can be an opportunity for teachers to bring together useful resources they can use in their own classrooms. The final collection will also be shared on our website so it can be used by everyone. \nOn June 25 we will have a session to explain the outline of the project before we ask individuals to confirm their participation\, so please feel free to join us if you are interested. \nWe look forward to meeting teachers interested in joining our Maruguto Teaching Material Project! \nDate and Time: \n\nProject outline explanation\, project member decision\nDate: Saturday\, June 25th\, 2022         1:00pm – 2:30pm (Eastern time)\nPlease check here for the time in your area.\n*Participation as a project member is not mandatory\, so feel free to join us if you are interested.\nDocument collection presentation\nDate: Saturday\, August 6th\, 2022        1:00pm – 3:00pm (Eastern time)\n*End time is subject to change.\n\nAbout Marugoto: https://www.marugoto.org/about/ \nTarget learners: adults\, university students\, etc. \nCollected Resource Sample: \n\nIntermediate 1 Topic 1: https://bit.ly/3PrDzlt\nMarugoto Teaching Material Project Collection of Materials:\n\nhttps://tr.jpf.go.jp/language/resources/teacher/marugoto-materials-collection/ \nEligibility: For both 1. and 2. participation is restricted to Japanese-language teachers residing in Canada. \nJFT staff: Yuiko Goya\, Noriko Saito \nContact: Noriko Saito nsaito@jftor.org

SUMMARY:Inuit Print Art and Its Early Japanese Influences
DESCRIPTION:In the mid-20th century\, a series of fortunate events led to the introduction of Japanese printmaking techniques to the Inuit community of Cape Dorset. In this talk with Dr. Norman Vorano (Queens University)\, we will hear the story of how these ancient traditions of Japan made their way to the remote Canadian arctic\, how Inuit artists built upon these traditions\, and the ways in which Inuit printmaking continues to thrive today. \nThe talk will be immediately followed by a Q+A session with the speaker.\n\nNorman Vorano\, a professor of art history at Queen’s University\, is a scholar and curator of North American Indigenous Art. He has curated internationally touring exhibition of Inuit art\, including Inuit Prints\, Japanese Inspiration: Early Printmaking in the Canadian Arctic and Picturing Arctic Modernity: North Baffin Drawings from 1964. He was a curator at the Canadian Museum of History\, and is a Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Fellow. \n  \n  \n  \nImage Credit:\nKenojuak Ashevak (Kinngait)\, The Arrival of the Sun\, 1962\, stonecut print\, Image: Canadian Museum of History;\nUn’ichi Hiratsuka (Japan)\, Stone Lantern\, 1958\, woodblock print\, Image: Canadian Museum of History
