In these sessions\, we will introduce words and expressions to get you started on the path to learning Japanese! \nIf you are in the Yonge/Bloor area\, why not stop by and learn more about Japanese language and interesting cultural information? These sessions are B.Y.O.B. (“bring your own bento“)\, so please feel free to bring your lunch with you! \nThe sessions will be held on Fridays in August at 12:15 pm\, and run for approximately 45 minutes. \nUpcoming Schedule and Topics: (subject to change) \n\nAugust 29\, 2025: Japanese Transportation\n\n  \nIt’s free to join but registration is required\, as space is limited to 25 participants per session. DESCRIPTION:  \nSanshiro Sugata \n姿三四郎 \nWednesday\, August 20\, 6:00PM (ET) \nDoors open 5:30PM | Film Screening | In-Person | JFT Event Hall \nDirected by KUROSAWA Akira • 1943 • 79 minutes • Presented in Japanese with English subtitles • Trailer  \nThe directorial debut of KUROSAWA Akira\, Sanshiro Sugata is based on the novel of the same name written by TOMITA Tsuneo\, the son of TOMITA Tsunejirō\, one of the earliest disciple of judo. It follows the story of Sanshiro\, a talented though willful youth\, who travels to the city in order to learn Jujutsu. However\, upon his arrival he discovers a new form of self-defense: Judo.  \nA spirited tale of a young judo student’s moral and physical awakening\, Sanshiro Sugata offers a unique glimpse into the formation of Kurosawa’s visual style and philosophical concerns. The film was quite influential at the time\, and has been remade five times. It spawned a sequel\, Sanshiro Sugata Part II (1945)\, also directed by Kurosawa. \n  \nSanshiro Sugata is part of our Body & Soul: Japanese Sports Cinema series. \nFree admission.  Register below. \n\n Director Profile: \nKUROSAWA Akira  (黒澤 明\, 1910–1998) is one of the most influential directors in the history of cinema. With a career spanning over five decades\, he is best known for his epic storytelling\, innovative editing techniques\, and humanistic themes. Kurosawa began his directing career during World War II\, making his debut with Sanshiro Sugata (1943). Even in this early work\, his signature themes—inner conflict\, ethical growth\, and the tension between tradition and modernity—are vividly present. \nKurosawa’s later masterpieces\, such as Rashomon (1950)\, Ikiru (1952)\, Seven Samurai (1954)\, and Throne of Blood (1957)\, earned him international acclaim and deeply influenced generations of filmmakers worldwide. After the 1960s he became less prolific; even so\, his later work – including two of his final films\, Kagemusha (1980) and Ran (1985) – continued to receive great acclaim. In 1990\, he received the Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement. His ability to translate deeply Japanese stories into universally resonant cinema made him a global ambassador for postwar Japanese film.

The film also pays as much attention to the crowds and workers as it does to the actual competitive events.  \nConsidered by many as one of the greatest sporting movies of all time and winner of two BAFTA awards\, Tokyo Olympiad remains a landmark achievement—not only as a record of a historic event\, but as a poetic meditation on the essence of sport and humanity. The film was also a box office hit\, holding the record for the highest-grossing film in Japan in terms of box office admissions for many decades. \nThere will be a 15-minute intermission during the film.   \n  \nTokyo Olympiad is part of our Body & Soul: Japanese Sports Cinema series. \nFree admission.  Register below.   \n\n Director Profile: \nICHIKAWA Kon (市川 崑\, 1915–2008) was a remarkably versatile filmmaker whose career spanned over 40 years and included many critically acclaimed works across genres\, from biting satire and poignant drama to historical epics and documentaries. Ichikawa started his film career in the animation department of a local film studio\, and later moved to the feature film department as an assistant director when the company closed its animation department. In the early 1940s\, Ichikawa moved to Tokyo to work for the Toho Film Company after the merge of the studios. He made his debut as director with A Thousand and One Nights (1947) with Toho. It was at Toho that he met WADA Natto\, a translator and screenwriter. They got married and started to collaborating on multiple films. \nThe period 1950–1965 contains some of Ichikawa’s most highly respected works. With Tokyo Olympiad (1965)\, he redefined the sports documentary genre\, shifting focus from nationalist spectacle to individual human stories. He also gained Western recognition during this period with two anti-war films\, The Burmese Harp (1956) and Fires on the Plain (1959)\, and the period-piece An Actor’s Revenge (1963) about a kabuki actor.

SUMMARY:Ritual and Reality: Contemporary Japanese Buddhism’s female voices and lived practices
DESCRIPTION:What do the lives of contemporary female priests tell us about Buddhism in Japan today? While these women undergo the same training and sectarian education as their male counterparts\, their experiences allow us to see Japanese Buddhism in a different light. Just as they chant the same sutras as men\, but in a higher octave\, their experiences often occur in a different register. Women frequently have to take over temples when certain situations occur: such as when the abbot\, whether an older brother\, parent\, or husband\, dies unexpectedly and there’s no other choice. What is it like to succeed a temple like this\, often later in life and without due preparation? What is it like to be fast tracked through the training and thrown into what for many is a totally alien world and an institution that is not designed for you? How do you make it your own? \nUsing interviews from dozens of priests across Japan\, this talk will outline the upbringing\, training\, and daily lives of female monastics to discuss the gendered realities of contemporary Buddhism in Japan.   \n\n \nThe Speaker \n  \nDr. Mark Rowe is an Associate Professor of Japanese Religions at McMaster University. He is also a recent Japanese Studies Fellow with the Japan Foundation. During his fellowship in 2023/2024\, Dr. Rowe stayed in Japan and pursued his research on Female Buddhist Priests in Contemporary Japan. He has an MA from Kyoto University and a PhD from Princeton University. He is primarily an ethnographer of Japanese Buddhism concerned with the lives and activities of “ordinary” priests. His first monograph\, Bonds of the Dead: Temples\, Burial\, and the Transformation of Contemporary Japanese Buddhism\, explored changing burial practices as a way to understand contemporary Buddhist institutions and shifting societal norms. He co-edited Figures of Buddhist Modernity in Asia with Jeffrey Samuels and Justin Thomas McDaniel. His current manuscript Muddy Amida is built on extensive fieldwork and interviews with over 225 priests from across Japan. In these sessions\, we will introduce words and expressions to get you started on the path to learning Japanese! \nIf you are in the Yonge/Bloor area\, why not stop by and learn more about Japanese language and interesting cultural information? These sessions are B.Y.O.B.
