Tremble All You Want is her third collaboration with MATSUOKA Mayu (Shoplifters\, A Silent Voice).\n \n\nWhat is White Day? \nIn Japan\, White Day is celebrated on March 14\, one month after Valentine’s Day. It was popularized in the 1980s as a “reply day\,” when men would reciprocate the presents they had received from women a month earlier\, usually chocolates and other confectionary. In recent years\, there are those who continue to practice Valentine’s and White Day traditions\, while there have also been cultural shifts around gender norms\, societal expectations\, and even financial viability surrounding these practices. DESCRIPTION:“Isolated in the City: How architecture mitigates urban loneliness” talk event on February 20 is now fully booked and registration is closed. Thank you for your interest. We will have an in-person waiting line before the event to release available seats on a first-come\, first-served basis. Admission is not guaranteed in the waiting line. \n \nIn big cities like Tokyo or Toronto\, social isolation and loneliness are common occurrences among residents. Social isolation can be caused by architectural factors such as detached living spaces and lack of communal spaces such as parks or green areas in big cities. The increasing number of single-person households and the growth of urban societies further exacerbate urban loneliness.  \nWhile exploring Tokyo’s megalopolis\, this lecture will examine how societal atomization impacts Japanese architecture and the urban landscape. On one hand\, the speaker will guide us through her investigation of new commercial solutions for individuals; on the other\, we will explore living arrangements designed for single people that encourage daily interactions. At a time when the risks of social isolation and exclusion are growing in global cities\, we will seek to understand how architecture can help mitigate these issues. \nThe speaker\, who is a former recipient of the Japan Foundation postdoctoral fellowship\, will also share her experiences in Japan alongside the primary lecture topic.  \n  \n\n  \nThe Speaker \nDr. Alice Covatta works across architecture and anthropology. She is a professor of architecture at the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Montreal. In 2016\, she obtained the Japan Foundation postdoctoral fellowship and worked as a researcher at Keio University in Tokyo until 2019. Her practice follows the spatial implications of society’s atomization in contemporary architecture\, public space\, and the city\, as well as in practiced and lived space.

Night is Short\, Walk On Girl won not only the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year\, but was also the first film directed by a Japanese director to win the Grand Prize for Best Animated Feature at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. His first original feature film\, Lu Over The Wall\, won the Cristal for Best Feature Film at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. \nFollowing the worldwide distribution of his two anime series\, DEVILMAN Crybaby (2018) and Japan Sinks 2020 (2020)\, which won the Jury Award for a TV Series at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival\, Yuasa’s works have become wildly popular not only in Japan but around the world. One of his most beloved shows adapted from ŌWARA Sumito’s manga of the same title\, Keep Your Hands Off of Eizouken!\, was named “one of the best TV shows of the year” by the New York Times. His feature directorial debut was Afro Tanaka starring MATSUDA Shota in 2012. Three TV series directed by Watanabe aired in 2018\, including After the Rain\, Gurazeni\, and Major 2nd. His directorial debuts\, Maborosi (1995) and After Life (1998) brought him international acclaim. Into the new millennium\, Director Kore-eda’s films were frequently selected at the Cannes Film Festival\, including Distance (2001)\, Nobody Knows (2004\, Best Actor Award for YUYA Yagira\, Cannes’ youngest recipient)\, Air Doll (2009)\, Like Father\, Like Son (Jury Prize\, 2013)\, Our little Sister (2015) and After the Storm (2016). In 2018\, Shoplifters won the Cannes’ highest honour\, the Palme d’or\, as well as being nominated for the 91st Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In recent years\, he reached a turning point in international co-productions with The Truth (2019) in France\, and Broker (2022\, Cannes Festival Best Actor Award for Song Kang-ho) in Korea. DESCRIPTION: Online Japanese Grammar Boot Camp\n  \nLooking for a fun and productive way to spend this winter break? Are you a grammar enthusiast (or just want to practice Japanese)? \nLook no further. Join our online self-study boot camps and learn/practice Japanese grammar in your own time! \n \n \nWhat is this about? \nWe have two course offerings targeting different levels: \nStarter (A1) course: for learners who can read the Hiragana and have some background studying Japanese (at least 3 months would be ideal).\nThis covers some basic grammar points e.g. numbers\, giving a simple self-introduction\, talking about family\, food\, where to go for lunch\, daily routine\, day and time\, prepositions\, describing your house\, etc. Elementary (A2-1) course: for learners who can read the Hiragana\, Katakana\, and some Kanji\, and have been studying for about a year (ideally).\nThis covers elementary grammar e.g. talking about what you do\, hobbies\, weather\, your language studies\, describing a point of interest in town and directions to get there inviting someone to something\, offering help\, etc. \n \nThese are two structured self-study courses where you can learn and practice Japanese grammar using free resources\, as well as online games and exercises developed by us. \nCourse duration: From Thursday December 19\, 2024 to Thursday January 8\, 2025* ≪ Those who finish all the tasks by January 9 will be entered into a draw to win prizes! \nFeatures: \n\nFree\nHas lots of practice materials catering to different preferences\, around 5-10 minutes each\nExercises are divided into stages and are available in the form of assignments/tasks on Google Classroom\nTrack your progress\nTo be done over 2-3 weeks (recommended)\, for about 10 minutes a day\n\nRegistration Deadline: Monday December 16 \nHow to Join: \n\nSee the orientation slides here to know how to progress.\nFill out the form below\, making sure select the course(s) you would like to join.\nSince you need a Google account to access the Classroom\, if you do not have one you can either: create a new Gmail account (instructions here)\, or\, if you would like to use your non-Gmail account\, you can follow the steps in this video to create a Google account with your existing email address.\nWe will send you the link to join the Google Classroom by December 19.\n\nParticipation Requirements:\n \n\nAny adult (18 or older) in Canada who has Japanese language study experience\, as follows:\n\n★Starter (A1) course: Must be able to read Hiragana and have some experience studying Japanese\, ideally for 3 months or more.\n★Elementary (A2-1) course: Must be able to read Hiragana\, Katakana\, and some Kanji.
